What’s Cookin’ At Our House This Week

Last week I talked about the basics of meal planning. You have to have a plan or you will get fat on Big Macs or waste money and gas running to StuffMart everyday. This is not the road to Joyful Motherhood. Spending a few minutes thinking through your week and glancing at what’s already in your pantry will not only make your grocery shopping time more efficient, but it will help dinnertime go much more smoothly.

As I sought to plan out this week’s menus, I found that I had very little in the way of main dish/protein items. I had lots of rice and vegetables in stock, but like I’ve said before, my boys are carnivores. So, a quick perusal of the sale ads showed me that hot dogs, brats, and chicken legs would be a good thing to feature on the FishFam Table this week.
Here’s my plan for the week:
Breakfasts:
blueberry coffeecake
oatmeal and carmelized apples
eggs, toast, and hashbrowns
Indiana Jones cereal — if I can find it! (We have a special 4 yo bday to celebrate!)
Scones and pineapple-blueberry smoothies
Waffles
Pancakes
Lunches:
lunch out after church
turkey bagel sandwiches, veggies and dip
PB and J and fruit
Lunchables, fruit, juice (We have a special 4 yo bday to celebrate!)
beans and rice
popcorn chicken, fruit, cheese
hot dogs and brats, pasta salad, fruit, veggies
Dinners:
Chicken Taquitos, Salad, Beans and Rice
Hamburgers, Veggies and Dip
Corn Dogs, French Fries, Caesar Salad, Bday cake (We have a special 4 yo bday to celebrate!)
Paso Mom Tacos
Pasta with Red sauce, Salad, Bread
Baked Chicken Legs, Potatoes, Veg, Salad

    New to your blog, and I love the way you menu plan. This makes total sense to me! I never know what I’ll be in the mood for any certain day…I’ve got to start getting this done!

    Out of curiosity, do you all do snacks?

    Hi Lauren! So glad to hear that this is helpful. Yes, we do do snacks. In an effort to avoid hearing, “What can I have for a snack?” all day long, I’m encouraging the boys to forage and then ask me if it’s ok. Generally, toast, crackers, fruit, yogurt, and cereal fall under that criteria. That is an area I need to get better organized. Hopefully, your prompting will move me to make a list for them, or something.

    Ok, the blueberry coffee cake sounds really great. Do you happen to have the recipe that you can share? :-) We are going blueberry picking tomorrow so it would be a good thing to make.

    Great job on the menu! I love menu planning, but I got a nice break from it this week. The kids planned the meals this week instead!

    THis seems so extensive to me. How long does it take for you to menu plan? I plan out menus for my dinners but that’s about it. And, how do you not spend the entire day in the kitchen btw. cooking and clean up for all these meals?

    Good questions, Bri. It’s easier than you think. This takes me about 10-20 minutes. Breakfasts are always the same – except for the Infamous Indy cereal. So, I don’t really think about that, just plug it in on its reg. day. Lunches are the same basic meals each week, only they move around depending on what’s for dinner. The dinners are really not that exotic. These are all pretty simple meals that don’t take long to prepare. I’ll try to post some of them, so you can see.

    That’s helpful and I’d love to see your recipes. I have tried the breakfast schedule. We seem to fall in and out of schedules rather frequently here b/c each week really has its own ebb and flow w/ varying dr’s appts and now, my Pampered Chef parties. So, I’m learning to schedule with great flexibility and not get uptight that others may be able to maintain a more consitent schedule (for meals, cleaning, kids’ activities, etc.) I’m a Type A that God is going to great lengths to make otherwise. :)

    I agree with Briana, I’d love to hear more details on how you get your breakfasts on the table in a timely manner in the morning. Do you do the prep the night before?

    The same with dinner: do you do any prep ahead of time, or do you make it up late afternoon?

    I’m waiting eagerly for more tips on streamlining this area–you seem to really have it down pat, so I’m anxious to glean ideas and tips!

    Oh and I’d love to have you share the recipes for them if and when you have a chance.
