Baby Greens with Nuts, Cranberries, Turkey, and Blue Cheese (Recipe Swap: What’s Your Favorite Post-Baby Indulgence?)

Do you know how much the food rules have changed since I had my first baby? In recent years I’ve been amazed at the growing lists of taboo foods: no alfalfa sprouts, no soft cheeses, no caffeine, no tuna fish, no hot dogs, no lunch meat, etc. etc. My goodness! Most of those were encouraged twelve years ago during my first pregnancy!

Thankfully, my doc is on the relaxed side. Last baby he gave me carte blanche on the food — except for limiting my intake of tuna and other fish that might absorb a lot of mercury. I’m good with that. Do you know how far we live from the ocean, anyway?

While he has allowed me to eat what I please, I have, nonetheless, been on the cautious side. I don’t want to be plagued by thoughts of What if? But, now that we’re on the Other Side (of birth), well, let’s just say, “Bring it on! I’m hungry!”

One of my personal favorites?

Baby Greens with Nuts, Cranberries, Turkey, and Blue Cheese
serves 1

two handfuls baby greens
1/4 cup coarsely chopped pecans
1/3 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup diced turkey
1/4 cup blue cheese crumbles
poppyseed or vinaigrette dressing

Arrange greens on plate. Layer with nuts, cranberries, turkey, and blue cheese crumbles. Drizzle with dressing.

  1. Because of gestational diabetes there is a lot that I can’t truly indulge in.

So 2 of my favorites are:
    double chocolate bourbon cake
    dessert fruit pizza

  2. With my son, I avoided lunchmeat the entire pregnancy. The first stop we made when we got discharged from the hospital? SUBWAY!!!!!! It never tasted so good :-)

    Oh, without a doubt…

a high-quality steak cooked medium-RARE with blue cheese crummbles melting on the top… and a glass of wine.

But you know? I have to admit I was never uber-paranoid about foods and I think my doc was a lot like yours. Mostly I ate anything I could keep down!

  4. Definitely a good cup of Starbucks. My body is repulsing coffee right now (1st trimester pregnant) and I can’t wait to start my morning with it again… I miss it! Waaaaa!

  5. I’ve never had double chocolate bourbon cake, but sounds yummy.

And the steak, JessieLeigh, oh my, you’ve got my number, girl!

  6. JessieLeigh says:

If you ever find yourself in the middle of a cornfield in Indiana, Jessica, you’ll probably find me… and we’ll grill up some most delicious steaks! Might throw a few portabellas on there too (though they’re not forbidden in pregnancy!)

  7. You’re on, JessieLeigh! I may have to bring my recipe for roasted garlic and baked goat cheese, too.

Oh, this conversation is making me hungry… and the bag of potato chips my husband just offered me is SO not going to cut it. ; )

Thanks so much for participating in this conversation about "a mom's life."
