The best source for apples on California’s Central Coast is Gopher Glen Apple Farm [4]. (In case you didn’t know.) And one of the best varieties they grow is called a Spitzenberg. I had never heard of it ten years ago when I first visited what was then a tumble-down farm stand located in a wooded canyon near the ocean. But it was there that our family discovered a bounty of different apples besides your typical Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith. In fact, we fell in love with apples. And Gopher Glen, though a good 4-5 hour drive from where we now live will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Every fall we would make weekly trips to Gopher Glen to stock up on whatever was being sold that week of their 100 varieties. Usually, I would buy 20-40 pounds at a time and then go home to cook up a storm. My little ones (I only had one or two back then) and I would fill the freezer with apple sauce and pies to bake later. And we ate plenty fresh.

During that same season of life, our family also discovered The Apple Crown. This recipe is so easy, you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it yourself.

Apple Crown

one apple per person, plus:

carmel sauce or carmel dip
whipped cream
chopped nuts
maraschino cherries

Wash the apple and using an apple corer-slicer, cut the apple into wedges and remove the core. Place the apple in the center of a plate with the wedges falling open from the center. Pour carmel sauce over. Shoot some whipped cream in the center. Sprinkle with nuts. Top with a cherry. Enjoy!
