Time for MOM: Have You Got a LIFE LIST?

A few weeks ago I spent a couple hours at a local bakery — by myself.

Yeah, I know. By myself.

I fed the baby, grabbed my Bible and a notebook, and left the house – by myself. I haven’t done that much in the last three months. I felt naked almost. I know many moms are used to time away from home and their kids. That just isn’t my season of life. And I’m good with it.

But, at the same time, it’s nice to go someplace and only be responsible for myself.

While I was out, I sat down and started penning a life list. I’m sure you’ve heard of the concept before. Basically, it’s the idea of putting to paper the goals you’d like to accomplish for your life. Many people list big adventures like scaling Mt. Everest. For me, sometimes, getting through the laundry is just as ambitious.

It was good to think about my list in terms of big dreams. Sure, there are things that I want to accomplish in the short term, like getting my recipe collection organized, putting together baby books for the girls, or simply unpacking all those stinking boxes! Those are certainly important and valuable, but thinking bigger was kind of like going outside for a breath of fresh air after being in a closed room. There’s room and time to achieve those. I don’t have to feel hurried or flustered.

And I may never achieve them all, but I can dream.

Some of the things I dream of doing one day:
— live completely debt-free
— vacation in Hawaii, relaxing on a peaceful beach
— visit England, roaming all the places where Jane Austen and CS Lewis lived
— own a small car to zip in and out of parking lots to run errands quickly
— spend a month in Paris visiting all the museums and sitting in cafes watching people.

All of the above could be enjoyed with or without my brood — except for the sports car. I’ll save that for when it’s just FishPapa and me.

How about you? What are your big dreams? Share them in the comments.

  1. “roam all the places where Jane Austen and CS Lewis lived” —

How delightful! Thanks for the reminder. It’s so easy as a mom to get bogged down with the day to day of life that I forget the bigger goals.

  2. Swim with dolphins
    Adopt
Go to Bermuda and or Ireland
    Live Debt-free

  4. JessieLeigh says:

-Travel to Ireland and visit hubby’s family who is still there

-Cruise the Northern Isles and explore my Norwegian heritage

-Find my “spot”… I’ve lived so many places and I don’t think I’ve found it yet…

-Make the time to write poetry again… I miss it.

These were fun to think about; thanks for the reminder!

  5. Matt would love the Hawaii idea. Okay, I would too, but I’m all over the European holiday. And I’d have to work in some time on the ski slopes there for sure. With no falling or accidents of course. I’m too old for any of that nonsense. Just perfect weather and good coffee to top it off. And of course, debt freeness, and adoption are on my long-term list too. Maybe someday! :)

Thanks so much for participating in this conversation about "a mom's life."

This is a place where moms can be themselves. Remember that each mother's path looks a little different. Please keep your comments respectful and kind. Reasonable minds will disagree in a nice way.

So let's talk about it, using "our big girl words."
