Not too long ago, I asked readers to challenge me with a birthday cake theme. There were some very clever suggestions, the top two in a readers’ poll being “Breakfast” and Fancy Nancy.
Breakfast I know, but being that my children who speak in complete sentences are all boys, I had no clue who or what Fancy Nancy was. Turns out she’s a young girl with a passion for accessories and all things “fancy.”
I decided to do both the top two cakes. And yesterday was Nancy’s turn. Are you ready? (Stay tuned for how I put a breakfast plate on a cake.)
Now remember, I’m working with a handicap – I haven’t been challenged by many girly likes or dislikes yet. My daughters are 2 and 5 months.
For Nancy’s cake, I made a purse filled with edible accessories: rings, gold coins, bracelets, sunglasses, a wand, and a mirror. I went against my personal dislike of purple and made the cake a lavendar hue since I know little girlies like purple. (That’s right, isn’t it?) I tried to use a heavy hand on the sprinkles and sparklies because those seem fancy.
Anyway, here it is: my Fancy Nancy Birthday Cake!
Let me know how I did.

Well done, my friend!
Are the sunglasses and mirror cookies?
I love the fancy-ness spilling over the top. I can just imagine some little ones trying to find the “best” accessory.
And, while I doubt any of them would request a Fancy Nancy cake, I bet your boys will have no problem eating it.
Looking forward to seeing your breakfast cake creation!

Very fancy, indeed! It looks great. My daughter is 5, and I haven’t heard her speak of Fancy Nancy… we’re all about the Boxcar Children right now.

Love the licorice purse handles!
Can’t believe your baby is 5 months old already! Time flies!

My 3 year old loves Fancy Nancy (and I love having something girly for her to enjoy besides Disney Princesses) and the cake looks great. I have a feeling we’re going to be having a Fancy Nancy b-day party in the fall but I don’t think I’ll be able to do anything this cute. Great job!

We haven’t gotten into Fancy Nancy yet, but it is around the corner! My 2 yr. old LOVES to dress up. And finds the Fancy Nancy accessories at Target fascinating! The cake is perfect and very FANCY…can you break it down for us? Like what size/shape pans you used? And how did you make the glasses? It is adorable!

Okay, I’m sorry to leave 2 comments, but my 4 year old SON just walked in and saw this photo and said, “Oh, Mom, can you make me that cake… pleeeasse!” I don’t think he knows it’s a purse…wait, I’ll ask… he said, “it’s GOOD cake with lots of gold” (like a pirate I assume which is what he’s into) Funny! I personally would like to slyly steal that star cookie on the edge.

Oh, I love that you made my request of Fancy Nancy, and I adore the cake! Such a wonderful take on it!
Thank you!
Of course I will be shamelessly stealing this idea!
And purple is fabulous – our daughter who loves Fancy Nancy has a purple room.
Did you know the author lives in Orange County, CA?

First off, let me say you guys are a gracious bunch of judges. Thanks for your encouragement. It didn’t come out quite like it looked in my head. But, I knew/hoped that little girls would probably go for it, especially with the candy. The cake is to please a child, not the parents. And that’s what I need to remember when I tackle these things.
Mrs. Pear, I’m so glad you liked it! I thought of you when I was doing it.
And now for breakfast!
Once we get this cake eaten! FishPapa’s bday is next week so we will be up to the gills in cake!

Yes, girls love purple. You are killing me with the un-girlyness. Just wait, my friend. Just wait.
