It’s birthday time around the FishHouse. We celebrate four birthdays in three weeks’ time which means lots of cake! But, remember? They like cake better than pie around here. So, it’s all good.

My Littlest Man had originally requested a Pokemon cake. Then in the final hour he changed his mind and asked for a cake with Indiana Jones. The reasoning was typical five-year-old logic. The toy that he really, really wanted for his birthday features Indy, so it had to be an Indy cake. OK.

FishMama says OK. What FishMama doesn’t remember is that while Lego is still big on Indiana Jones, the rest of the toy department is not. And since no FishBoy can find last year’s action figure, the hunt was on to find a replacement – during date night no less. When Indiana Jones is no longer the “IN” toy.

Yeah, good times. Finally, we found a chubby, baby-can-suck-on-it-when-we’re-done version of Indiana Jones as well as some very cool candy.

Here’s the scoop on making your own Indiana Jones cake, a new and improved version of the first:

Ingredients for Indiana Jones cake.

Things you’ll need
round cake pan
2 mini round springform pans
1 foil cupcake liner
1 cake mix, prepared according to package directions
chocolate frosting
3 oreo cookies
2 single-serving packs nutter butter cookies
1 Indiana Jones action figure
chocolate pebbles
chocolate rocks
large candy crystal
miniature rock candy bits
2 giant gummy snakes (ours were about 18 inches long!)

Preheat oven to 350F. Divide prepared cake batter amongst the round cake pan, the mini springform pans and the cupcake liner. Place in oven. Bake 15 minutes. Remove cupcake. Bake remaining cakes 6-15 minutes longer, checking every 4-5 minutes. Tester should come out with a few crumbs attached. Cool about 10 minutes. With large serrated knife, trim the tops of the cakes flush with their pans. Remove from pans and cool completely on wire racks.

On serving plate place 9-inch round cake. Apply a layer of chocolate frosting. Place one of the mini rounds in the middle of the 9-inch round. Apply a layer of frosting to this cake. Stack the second mini round on top of the first and frost top and sides. Frost cupcake and place upside down on second mini round. The cupcake will serve as the “altar” or resting place of the relics or jewels.

Grind nutter butters in the food processor or blender until you have coarse crumbs. Remove from bowl. Repeat with the oreo cookies. Place action figure on top of second mini round, reaching for the “altar” cupcake. Sprinkle cookie crumbs liberally over cakes. Strew candy snakes around the base cake. Place chocolate rocks and pebbles here and there about the cakes. Pile the candy crystal and the rock candies atop the second mini round and on the altar.

  1. Thank you for the ideas. My son is turning three at the end of March and is all about Indy Jones. (Thanks to my nephew who is 6.) We had a hard time at Christmas finding Indy stuff that wasn’t in little lego pieces. Ugh. So now he wants an Indy cake for his birthday. This is a great idea. Now I just need to get out and find some Indy stuff for the cake and cool snake candy. Too bad Indy is not that popular now.
    Thanks for the creative ideas!

  2. OH my gosh you are killing me with coolness! Now my boys will totally want this one too!

  3. This is a great cake!

If it makes you feel better, our daughter is having a Fancy Nancy party the end of this month and the lesson I learned is that if you are going to plan a birthday based on a book that is not at TV show be prepared for a LOT of do it your selfing! Which is fine.

Especially when Grandma buys a Fancy Nancy crown to adorn the cake! Which will naturally have purple icing….with sprinkles.

  4. You’re so darn talented…

Looks fantastic! I bet the birthday boy was immensely pleased.

I still don’t envy you guys having to cut these cakes though… I think I’d have a royal mess on my hands!
