Honor Your Mama: Whatcha Gonna Do?

This is the first year in awhile that I get to spend Mother’s Day with my mom. Not only do we now live in the same state, but she is also coming down for the weekend to watch the kids while we go to a homeschool conference on Friday and Saturday. That leaves Sunday for us to spend together.

I can’t tell you what I have planned to honor my mother. 1, because she reads my blog. And 2, I’m not exactly sure! But, I know it will involve good eating.

Come back on Thursday for Ultimate Recipe Swap and share your food plans and recipes for Mother’s Day.

Here are some other ideas for how you might bless the moms in your life this weekend:

** Reader Becky is making my Book of Days for a Mother’s Day gift. What a great idea! I made these for Christmas presents, but any mom would be pleased, especially if you personalized the clip art. In fact, this post features a number of gifts you can make as a sweet surprise for Mother’s Day.

** Enter goodLife {Eats} Mother’s Day giveaway. Can you imagine giving one of these great prizes to your mom? It ends Thursday 5/7 at midnight, so be sure to enter.

** Order a PeaceLoveMom tshirt and use the coupon code LIFEMOM09 for free shipping on continental US orders of $20 or more. Code is good for all of May. (By the way, I’m not making any money for referring you. The code is just something that PLM is sharing with my readers this month. Don’t forget to enter the giveaway as well.)

** Do you have the makings of a spa kit in your stockpile? Gather together body wash, lotion, and a few sundries. Add a pretty colored washcloth, a bath puff, and this handout for a great way to pamper MOM.

** And you could always give a mom a muffin.

Got another great gift idea? Tell us about it in the comments!

Here is an idea of a gift I gave my mom for Christmas that is inexpensive. More importantly, in her words, it is “the best gift I have ever received.” Worth every minute of my time!

I bought an inexpensive but pretty carved wood box from World Market (small, less than 4×4 inches) and cut about 40-50 pieces of cardstock to just fit inside. With a nice pen, I wrote “Things I love about you” and the date on the first card, and then on each remaining card something funny or special or sentimental that I love about my mom. Everything from “You have made me feel loved every minute of my life.” to “You wash used Ziploc baggies and dry them (even though it drives Dad crazy) because you care about the earth.” The whole thing took me less an an hour and a half and cost less than $10. I also gave the same gift to a teen mom I know to encourage her in her wish to keep and raise her daughter.

Looking forward to reading more ideas, especially for far-away moms.

We ordered flowers for our moms, because they like that. We will also be visiting my lovely in-laws and get to spend the week after Mother’s Day with them.

For my best mom friends, I have made some of these hand scrubs to give as inexpensive gifts.

The Mother’s Day contest is open till 11:59 pm PST 5/07, not 5/05 :)

  3. Jess – What about making some Pecan Pralines for Mom? You’ve made those before right? You could take it another step further and make an “Olvera Street” lunch – homemade tortillas and crockpot carnitas! I wish I knew how to make all that…

Thanks so much for participating in this conversation about "a mom's life."

This is a place where moms can be themselves. Remember that each mother's path looks a little different. Please keep your comments respectful and kind. Reasonable minds will disagree in a nice way.

So let's talk about it, using "our big girl words."
