Years ago I read about how you could cut uncooked hot dogs in certain ways to make them form different shapes once cooked. I never gave it a try until I kept coming across ocean-themed hot dog ideas in my research for Camp Wannalaffalotta. So, we tried two different “recipes” this weekend: octopus and jellyfish.
For the octopus:
Keeping the hot dog in one piece, slice one half of it in half lengthwise. Slice more and more until there are eight strips all attached to that main piece. Toss it in boiling water and its “tentacles” will curl. Serve on a bed of cooked noodles or mac and cheese, preferably made with shell-shaped pasta.
Cut an uncooked hotdog into 4-5 chunks. Insert 6-7 pieces of uncooked spaghetti into each chunk. Cook in boiling water until spaghetti is cooked.

I saw a recipe once with the octopus hotdog, only it was sitting on a bed of bluish-green noodles. Perhaps you could add a little food coloring to the water or the noodles….really make that octopus look like he’s in the water…
very cool!
These are SO COOL!! I am totally trying these this week! Thanks so much for the time and effort you have put into your camp series, we plan to have a ball with it.
We do the octopus hot dogs with mac-n-cheese, my kids love it! But I’ve never heard of the jelly fish hot dogs. I LOVE THAT ONE!!! I will definitely be adding it to my “kid-friendly eats”. Thanks for sharing!
Serve with french-style green beans (AKA green seaweed)! = ) Fun!
Love these ideas!!
