Grocery Geek Presents: Fruit Loot

This week I only went to one store. But, I took ALL SIX KIDS. So, I think I get extra points for that. Don’t you?

The kids did great. It helped that I made my expectations of their behavior very clear as well as the consequences. Losing your half hour of computer time can be a major bummer in the summer. I was really proud of them; everyone was so helpful as we managed two carts through our local market. Here’s what we nabbed:

6 loaves of clearanced bread $0.99 each
a cherry pie $1.99
butter $2/# (not the best deal around, but I didn’t want to make a trip to Costco just for butter)
eggs $1.39/dozen
yogurt $2
cheddar $1.99/#
organic lemonade after sale and coupon $0.75
cherry tomatoes $1.50
apples $0.88/#
cilantro $0.33
cukes $0.69 each
avocados $0.99
nectarines and peaches $0.49/#
pineapple $1.50 each
red bell peppers $0.77 each
romas $0.88/#
watermelon $1.50 each!
serrano peppers $0.19 for 4 chiles
strawberries $1.25/#
onions $0.77/#
bananas $0.69/#

Total for pictured: $54.22

I like to shop on Wednesdays at Sunflower Market because it is double ad day. You can the past week's ad and the new week's ad on the same day.

Anon, I think I must just have long arms. ;)

Katie, Sunflower sounds like it must be like the store I went to. They have double ad day, too. You did a great job. Pineapple for a buck? Wow! I'm going to check out your watermelon lemonade since I have so many melons now.

  4. What a haul!

  5. Melissa says:

Wow, those are great prices? What store did you shop at?

  6. OK-you know you're in southern ca when you can get produce at prices like that!!! I'm jealous-very nice job!

    I love double ad Wednesdays!
FYI: The peaches last year dropped to 3# for $1. That is when I really stock up and freeze bags at a time.

Thanks so much for participating in this conversation about "a mom's life."

So let's talk about it, using "our big girl words."
