URS: Birthday Cake Round-Up

July 16, 2009

Today’s the day to show off your birthday cake creations. Can’t wait to see what your kids have convinced you to make in honor of their birthdays!

This week the FishFam didn’t celebrate any birthdays, but I did decorate a cake to keep you company. And since they like cake more than pie, I didn’t hear any complaints.

If you’ve been around here for the last week, you know that I asked readers to challenge me to a cake theme. I did this back in January and ended up creating two of my favorite cakes: Fancy Nancy and Breakfast. Last week readers nominated a variety of themes and earlier this week, I posted a poll in the sidebar to hear the people’s voice. The poll’s still up so you can see what the other options were. They all sound like really fun ideas. Thanks for the challenge!

The winning theme, of course, was a drive-in movie theatre. I only have one memory of going to the drive-in with my dad when I was a kid. We were late and missed the show I wanted to see (Goin’ Coconuts with Donny and Marie) and instead, had to watch The Deer Hunter or some other such nonsense. (At least it was nonsense for a 6-year old.) I remember spilling the entire can of Hi-C fruit punch all over my Raggedy Ann sleeping bag and get yelled at.

Needless to say, I’ve blocked out all other recollections of drive-in movie theatres and relied on this historical website and my husband’s memory. He clued me into the mounded parking lot thing. Who knew? But, maybe guys remember those kinds of things.

I’ll be posting a tutorial of the cake tomorrow. But, here’s a peak at the finished product:

(Today through Sunday night, you can purchase my ebook, Pretty.Cool.Cakes for only $2. While it doesn’t include the above cake, it does include a baker’s dozen of very fun themed cakes. Super easy. Promise.)

And here are some cakes that readers sent in:

My cake and 1st birthday cupcakes don't hold a candle to these beauties, but I'll practice humility and share anyway: http://www.kitchenstewardship.com/2009/07/10/finer-things-friday-kiddos-birthdays/ At least my kids are darlings! :)

wow — these cakes are impressive! We are pretty low key for birthday cakes (but, we're kidless too)… mostly, we prefer warm vanilla cake (without frosting) and … cherry cake!

Here's the link to my cakes from this year – WallE and Curious George. I made them using a Buttercream Transfer technique that my mom taught me, and is pretty easy to do.

Birthday Un Cakes are a better prescription for me, so here are a couple easy ideas for others out there who are challenged in the "creativity with food" department:

Very cool cakes! Your readers are talented cake decorators. And I'll bet the cakes are delicious.
I didn't make a birthday cake, but I did just post a jello "poke" cake (light version) that a fellow blogger, Sandra at Add Humor and Faith, told me about. It was very tasty :)
