Real Food on a Real Budget: A Giveaway

May 12, 2010

If you’ve been reading here awhile, you know that I am currently on a mission to healthify my family’s diet as well as keep our grocery budget low. This is no small feat!

We currently spend $500-600 a month to feed our family of 8. A lot of this is thanks to couponing and cooking from scratch. Freezer cooking has helped greatly to keep my costs low. And my pantry is starting to change a little. I realize, though, that as I make the move to incorporate more organic foods, more whole grains, and fewer processed foods, that I could be up against higher totals at the checkout.

I’ve heard that many of you desire the same things and face a similar challenge. That is why I am so pleased to share today’s giveaway with you.

Stephanie Langford, also known as Keeper of the Home, has written an extremely profession, well-thought out volume, entitled Real Food on a Real Budget: How to Eat Healthy for Less.

In this book, Stephanie addresses the myriad of ways to provide your family with good eats, including meal planning, cooking from scratch, buying in bulk, food preservation, using coupons, and growing your own. It’s a well-thought out tome.

Stephanie has not only put together the most professional-looking ebook I’ve ever seen, but she has crafted a go-to resource for those who want to eat well, enjoy good health, and “act their wage.” I’m looking forward to implementing many of her recommendations in the coming months and years.

(Yes, I need to do these things in baby steps.)

If you’d like to get reading right away, you can buy the digital edition for $18.97. Or for an extra $7 get a printed copy shipped to your home.

Or win a copy of Real Food on a Real Budget here!

This week, in honor of LifeasMOM’s blogiversary one LifeasMOM reader will win a copy of Real Food on a Real Budget.

Simply leave a comment on this post, telling us how you would like to improve your eating habits this summer.

I think we’re pretty good about not eating processed foods. But I’d like to cut down on these even more (except for my breakfast cereal!).

2 Kelleigh @ Kelleigh Ratzlaff Designs May 12, 2010 at 11:38 am

Ooooh! I want this book SO BAD!! However, comment #1 never wins, does it. Oh, well!!

I want us to eat more stuff from the grill and the garden. We usually do, but I am really looking forward to it this year!!

3 Kelleigh @ Kelleigh Ratzlaff Designs May 12, 2010 at 11:38 am

@Kelleigh @ Kelleigh Ratzlaff Designs, YAY! I’m not #1! LOL!

4 Paula May 12, 2010 at 11:38 am

I’d like to find some variation of vegetable that my child will eat. Right now, juice is the ONLY way she gets ANY!

5 Missy May 12, 2010 at 11:38 am

I have a daughter who only eats home-canned green beans and frozen homemade applesauce for her vegetables and fruits. This summer I would really like to get her to enjoy more variety in fruits and vegetables.

6 Amy May 12, 2010 at 11:42 am

We’re trying to eat more local. Can’t wait for the farmer’s markets to open!

7 Ashley May 12, 2010 at 11:42 am

I do a pretty good job of cooking and eating healthy, but summertime is always hard. It’s hot and I would rather be outside playing in the water than cooking in a hot kitchen. I’m hoping to find some good meals that will help me overcome this problem and continue to feed my family healthy foods.

8 Christina May 12, 2010 at 11:44 am

I’ve just discovered the freezer cooking thing. I’m starting small but it makes a difference for the nights I don’t want to cook. I’d like to cut down on the night when we run out and grab something b/c we’re busy or lazy. I think maybe trying to eat healthier all together might put us all in the kitchen and bring some more variety into our dinnertime.

9 Sara May 12, 2010 at 11:46 am

We are trying to grow more of our own foods and buy more locally grown foods like veggies, meat and cheeses.

10 Annette Holbrook May 12, 2010 at 11:47 am

My youngest son has been referred to a pediatric gastroenterologist for a very sensitive stomach and small weight gain. I would love to learn how to feed my family healthier for his sake.

11 Christa May 12, 2010 at 11:48 am

Right now we mostly eat processed foods and occassionally have time to cook from scratch. I would like to flip that so that most of the time we’re cooking from scratch. I think it might help if I try the freezer cooking. :)

12 Jessica Fisher May 12, 2010 at 8:20 pm

Mmmm…. I sense another freezer cooking conversion coming on. ;)

13 Margery May 12, 2010 at 11:49 am

I’m working on growing some of my own veggies and blueberries. We are also trying to eat more local food from CSA and farmer’s market.

14 Jen @ Happy Little Homemaker May 12, 2010 at 11:50 am

Eat more fruits & veggies!

15 Amy May 12, 2010 at 11:54 am

I’d like to add more veggies.

16 Becky May 12, 2010 at 11:55 am

My husband and I will be traveling a lot this summer, which will be difficult, because our main goal is to stop eating out and eat more fresh produce.

17 M in TX May 12, 2010 at 11:55 am

I’d like to eat more fresh fruits and veggies.

18 Christine May 12, 2010 at 11:56 am

The last 6 months I’ve been working on saving money by cooking from scratch. I would love to learn more and be able to incorporate more vegetables into my meals. This is a great looking book!

19 Holly May 12, 2010 at 11:59 am

I have been following the Keeper of the Home blog for a while and I love all the helpful tips. I would love to have everything in one place for reference. I would love to find way to get my kids to eat more fruits and veggies (we are doing so much better already, but could always improve). I also need to work on getting our budget a little more under control. Thanks for the chance to win.

20 Greta @ Mom Living Healthy May 12, 2010 at 11:59 am

We are working on cutting out the processed foods in our diet. Right now I’m trying to find good substitutions or alternatives to those processed foods.

21 Courtney May 12, 2010 at 11:59 am

We are trying to work on buying more organic foods.

22 eunice b May 12, 2010 at 12:00 pm

my husband & i are planning to move 8 hrs away this summer, and i’m concerned our eating habits are going to suffer with our busyness. we do have a garden planted, so we’ll have plenty of fresh veggies! :-)

23 Lauren May 12, 2010 at 12:00 pm

I would like to put more variety in our menu. We get into a routine and I just make what is easy and I know we like. I need new affordable and healthy ideas.

24 Merry Jo May 12, 2010 at 12:01 pm

We’ve already started improving our eating habits, as our family had to go on the SCD for hubby’s health about a month and a half ago. I’m excited to continue our diet through the summer, with all of the fresh fruits and veggies available!

25 Kelli May 12, 2010 at 12:03 pm

I’d like to eat more locally and cut our budget. I’m trying to become more cost conscious–this blog helps so much!

26 Julie May 12, 2010 at 12:04 pm

I’m trying to do more ‘from scratch’ cooking and incorporating more veggies.

27 Rachel J May 12, 2010 at 12:07 pm

Less sugar- more veggies!

28 Rebecca May 12, 2010 at 12:07 pm

Jessica,
We already eat pretty healthy but there is always room for improvement:)) However, keeping our food budget down for 7 people is quite the challenge here, as well as variety. Due to this fact, I am open to being taught even more ways on eating healthy and frugal at the same time.
Rebecca

29 Johnlyn May 12, 2010 at 12:07 pm

I would love to peak at this book! I am a bit worried about our food budget as we go to more meat and veggies!

30 Jessica Croft May 12, 2010 at 12:08 pm

I would like to eat more veggies and fruits as snacks instead of junk food or extra carbs.

31 Jenn @ Beautiful Calling May 12, 2010 at 12:09 pm

We eat fairly well {most of the time} but it is much easier in summer with all the fresh veggies and fruits!

32 Heather G May 12, 2010 at 12:09 pm

I’d like us to eat more veggies & less sugar.

33 Shelly May 12, 2010 at 12:09 pm

We’re really working hard to cut out processed foods and eat as much organic as possible. I’d love to learn how to do more!

34 Mary Jo May 12, 2010 at 12:10 pm

I would LOVE to read this book! I have been eye-balling it since it came out, but it’s just not in the budget right now.

35 Aimee May 12, 2010 at 12:11 pm

This looks like a great book!

36 Jennie @ A Welcoming Heart May 12, 2010 at 12:12 pm

My family and I have joined a Run Club that is part of our homeschool group. We meet on Mondays for a group run with the club and run daily as a family. We are following Hal Higdon 5-K Training Program for the Novice and are on week 6 of our training with race day on Saturday, May 22, 2010. We are very excited to have made it this far since we have never done an exercise program before and we have been able to keep to our commitment so far. I guess we were all ready to do something about our weight and fitness and that have helped us be successful.

We are very excited that we can do an exercise program as a family that has such a great goal at the end. As a family we are happy to be able to combine our commitment to volunteerism and our newfound enthusiasm for running by participating in the Loving Care 5K Run/Walk as our first race. My husband and I will be walking and our kids will be jogging as we aim our sights to the finish line.

We have not started dieting but are watching what we eat by adding healthy food choices and cutting down on unhealthy choices and extra snacking. I am considering getting some weight watchers recipes off the Internet. My family will not like me putting them all on a diet so I may be adding one or two recipes a week to my menu plan and see how it goes. The recipes would have to be consistent with what I would normally serve and not taste like diet food. I am going to try avoiding eating out at restaurants or try lighter menu options when I do. I cook from scratch and we don’t eat a lot of processed foods but do need to add more whole grains.

37 Sarah @ The Domestic CEO May 12, 2010 at 12:13 pm

I would really like to limit the processed food that comes in our house and eat more organic and local food.

38 Jaime May 12, 2010 at 12:14 pm

I want to focus on eating more fruits and veggies and less junk food. I’d love to win this book!

39 Jolie May 12, 2010 at 12:14 pm

I would love suggestions b/c I want to try to incorporate more organic produce and possibly dairy into our diets…and maybe meat…baby steps!

40 Nichole May 12, 2010 at 12:15 pm

My goals for the summer are to improve our eating as by starting freezer cooking, eliminating HFCS from our household, and by getting out and visiting the farmers market more often. We are big vegetable eaters in my family but all of us could stand to up our fruit intake, even if it is home-made smoothies.

41 Keri May 12, 2010 at 12:19 pm

I would like to start incorporating more whole grains into our diet.

42 Beth May 12, 2010 at 12:21 pm

I’d love to win a copy of this book! Our family has been on a journey toward healthier eating, and we’ve been gradually taking steps to improve our diet by including more natural and organic whole foods. Although I am doing everything I can to keep our costs down and stay within budget, I am seeing some increases at the checkout. I’d love more ideas on how to keep those costs down. Thank you.

43 Jennifer Sikora May 12, 2010 at 12:21 pm

I want to bring in more fresh produce instead of canned and frozen

44 Kelly A May 12, 2010 at 12:21 pm

I would like to work on getting the hubby and kids to eat more veggies!

45 Monica May 12, 2010 at 12:22 pm

I would like to find a freezer cooking buddy to help increase the amount of home cooked meals we eat.

46 Jennie May 12, 2010 at 12:24 pm

Always, we’re trying to eat more fruits and vegetables. I also want to eat less meat, so I need to find ways to make beans more appealing to my children. They will eat some beans/recipes really well, but not all. And my husband wants me to make more things with a lower glycemic index–something I don’t know much about.

47 Dawn Avant May 12, 2010 at 12:25 pm

With the abundance of fresh produce in the summer, our family will buy more local produce and work towards getting our 5-9 servings daily.

48 Heather May 12, 2010 at 12:26 pm

Hands down for me, is kicking the soda habit. 40-60 oz a day have done a number on me. That is my place to start.

49 Beth May 12, 2010 at 12:27 pm

I would love to get this book! My son just turned a year old and will be paying a lot more attention to what we eat. I am good about cooking healthy for him, but for the larger meals for myself and my husband, I definitely need help!

50 melissa May 12, 2010 at 12:29 pm

I am trying to increase the amount of fruits and veggies we eat.

51 Rachel @ No Preservatives Added May 12, 2010 at 12:29 pm

We need to cut down on fast food trips and I need to bake and cook more from scratch this summer.

52 Tami May 12, 2010 at 12:30 pm

We’ve already drastically cut down on our processed foods. Now I’m trying to get motivated to do the freezer cooking so there are no more “let’s just get pizza” nights when I’ve been too busy to even think about supper.

53 Brandy F May 12, 2010 at 12:31 pm

I would like to use more whole foods.

54 Renae May 12, 2010 at 12:32 pm

I’m looking forward to gardening this year!

55 Sheri May 12, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Oooo, I want to win! I follow Stephanie’s blog also and have been so inspired by her. You are correct, these things do take baby steps! Right now I am slowly working on changing to more natural sweeteners and am looking into finding affordable sources for organic meat. She has already inspired me to change so many things. Luckily my husband is fairly go-with-the-flow on most of it :)

56 niki stevens May 12, 2010 at 12:33 pm

We have so few resources for whole foods here in Atlantic Canada. I will take all the tips I can get.

57 Jennifer B May 12, 2010 at 12:34 pm

Hi! I am taking HFCS out of our diet. Then processed foods. I have started buying a few organics as I can afford to…. we feel better already! I would love to know how to save some $ doing so!

58 Eileen May 12, 2010 at 12:35 pm

We are trying to eat more organic without blowing the budget. Also trying to get more fruits and vegetables in my children.

59 Beth May 12, 2010 at 12:38 pm

I REALLY want to start eating more organic, hormone-free meat, but it definitely will be a blow to the budget!

60 Lori May 12, 2010 at 12:40 pm

I’d like to incorporate more whole grains into our meals, as well as use more organic products.

61 Michele May 12, 2010 at 12:41 pm

I want to support my local farmers this summer.

62 Heidi F May 12, 2010 at 12:42 pm

I want to have a small garden that the kids help in (and that we eat from!), I want to pick blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries (and freeze a ton) this summer, and I want to visit the FArmers’ Mkt. each week!

63 Coby May 12, 2010 at 12:43 pm

I am hoping the garden I planted will grow well and provide us with fruit and veggies this summer. I also want to incorporate more whole grains into my baking.

64 Katie May 12, 2010 at 12:43 pm

I am so intrigued by this book, thanks to you and Stephanie for offering a chance to win!

65 Jaime May 12, 2010 at 12:44 pm

I want to eat more fruits and vegetables!

66 Kristin May 12, 2010 at 12:44 pm

I would really like to start adding more fresh produce in my family’s diet. this book sounds great, i would love to read it!

67 Sarah May 12, 2010 at 12:45 pm

i’d like to try more vegetarian recipes. we eat meat (my husband LOVES it) but for budget and health reasons i would like to scale back and still have tasty recipes where he won’t miss the meat!

68 Phyllis May 12, 2010 at 12:45 pm

We have been doing more and more to make our foods more healthy. We buy mostly all organic and bake all of our breads ourselves. We are even making our own cleansers and soaps, but that is getting off topic. We spend about twice as much as you do, but perhaps some of that has to do with the fact we have two teens that can’t have casein (milk proteins) and gluten (wheat, etc.). I am hungry, pardon the expression, to learn more about what I can do to both save money and live a more healthy lifestyle.
-Phyllis

69 giana May 12, 2010 at 12:45 pm

I would love to win! I would like to spend less this summer on groceries.

70 leslie blair May 12, 2010 at 12:45 pm

We’re making the transition ourselves this month! It’s a big deal and I need to be prepared. This will be a great resource!

71 Karen May 12, 2010 at 12:47 pm

I want to eat more vegetables from the local farmers’ market.

72 Gen May 12, 2010 at 12:47 pm

How exciting! We made the transition into ‘whole foods’ a few years ago. Only now are we able to work towards an organic kitchen/pantry. Of course, how to do all of this on a realistic budget is the biggest challenge, sounds like the perfect book for us!

73 Andrea Watts May 12, 2010 at 12:48 pm

I need to eat more fresh vegetables instead of fast food!

74 Christina May 12, 2010 at 12:49 pm

I am always trying to add more produce–we are decent but could do better. Summer is a good time because I crave crisp salads and fresh fruits all summer long!

75 Danielle May 12, 2010 at 12:49 pm

We are planting a garden in the local community garden. I’m looking forward to spending time with my girls weeding and reaping the benefits of our labor. And eating it too!

76 Carol May 12, 2010 at 12:52 pm

I would like to consistently buy locally grown produce.

77 jeanne May 12, 2010 at 12:55 pm

I am a “real food” rookie of sorts. I am always on the look out for a great guide to putting nutritionaly dense food on the table for as little $$ as possible – I am feeding 3 teenagers right now!

78 deb May 12, 2010 at 12:58 pm

would love to get more variety & healthy foods into breakfasts. also to learn more about soaking etc i also love to know what i don’t know!

79 Mandy May 12, 2010 at 12:59 pm

We need to have healthier snacks on hand this summer.

80 Jen May 12, 2010 at 1:00 pm

I’d love more ideas on how I can improve our healthy eating even more than we have already. We’ve been making changes over the past 7 years but there is always room for improvement!

81 Ashley May 12, 2010 at 1:02 pm

Hoping to start freezer cooking so I have healthy meals to grab! Also, summer is a great time to eat basic…meat, veggie, fruit…no fillers!

82 Serenity May 12, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Just started freezer cooking this week. Hope to keep that going and make more of our own convenience foods.

83 Jackie R May 12, 2010 at 1:08 pm

I want my family to eat food that is grown/raised locally. Hopefully I can make some headway in finding these sources!

84 Sarah May 12, 2010 at 1:09 pm

We’re trying to make our diet as “whole foods” as possible, limiting our intake of processed and artificial foods…

…typed as I sip on a Diet Dr. Pepper.

85 rachael May 12, 2010 at 1:10 pm

I’d like to improve by cooking more at home! A challenge, since we have a new baby due any minute.

86 Amy May 12, 2010 at 1:12 pm

Thank you for this posting.
Shelley :)

88 Jana @ The Summer House May 12, 2010 at 1:17 pm

We are still trying to eat 80% unprocessed….we are almost there. I’d like to see my family eating more vegis.
Jana

89 Kristen May 12, 2010 at 1:19 pm

We started phasing out the unhealthy about 6 weeks ago and it’s working wonderfully! However, I would love this book to show me the next steps in the journey.

90 Lauren May 12, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Wow, that book looks awesome! :) We are working on eating healthier (and cheaper) as well, and my goal for this summer is to eat less meat. I’m trying to look for more meals that don’t have meat as a main ingredient!

91 Amy B. May 12, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Add more fresh produce to our meals/diet.

92 Nancy H. May 12, 2010 at 1:20 pm

I’m working on getting us some local beef this summer…that’s my undertaking at the moment!

93 Nancy H. May 12, 2010 at 1:21 pm

@Nancy H., And I love Stephanie’s blog so I’d love to read her book!

94 Alex Hall May 12, 2010 at 1:23 pm

I’d love to win! This is just the book I need. I think I’m in the same spot you are….just beginning my Real Food journey and I don’t have extra money to spend. The biggest thing I’ve tackled now is to save up to buy a portion of a local, grass-fed cow.

95 Angie May 12, 2010 at 1:23 pm

This summer I have to resist urge to buy treats. I am totally addicted to buying my fave foods when I see them for 50%off cause they will be due soon. Since the due date is soon…I have to eat it quick! These are foods that I don’t need…so I need to save my money and ignore them! And purchase yummy organic produce!

96 Alicia May 12, 2010 at 1:23 pm

I want to drink more water and eat more veggies!

97 Kelsea May 12, 2010 at 1:24 pm

I would like to eat more raw veggies and fruits and learn simple meals that aren’t processed.

98 Hattie May 12, 2010 at 1:25 pm

I would love to be able to grow more of our own vegetables using our own scraps-from-our-kitchen compost for fertilizer. We are renting for the time being, which makes gardening difficult since it must all be done out of pots! I would love to win this book!

99 Ginger May 12, 2010 at 1:25 pm

I want to incorporate more vegetables. Especially those fresh from the garden ones.

100 Sarah A. May 12, 2010 at 1:25 pm

I would like to find more local sources for bulk purchases to make healthier ingredients more affordable. Thanks for the giveaway!

101 Amanda May 12, 2010 at 1:28 pm

We planted a garden for the first time this year. I’m also hoping to start freezer cooking this summer.

102 Misty B. May 12, 2010 at 1:41 pm

I would like to figure a way to help my boys with eating better. I thought we were doing good, but looking at it we could still cut more processed foods out. I would love to figure out how to do that while making it cost effective! Thanks for the great giveaway!

103 Deanne May 12, 2010 at 1:49 pm

I’d like to include more salads with our meals this summer. And then start introducing more veges in the salads.

106 Elizabeth May 12, 2010 at 1:56 pm

I would love to eat more organic and local. But it is hard with a budget.

107 Jill May 12, 2010 at 1:56 pm

I want to eat a lot more fruits and veggies. I love putting them on the grill, making salsas and salads. I hope to be doing that this summer. I would love this book!

I am trying to eliminate all processed foods and get in more fresh fruit and veggies. I also want to eliminate HFCS from any processed food that I do end up buying.

110 Jen G. May 12, 2010 at 2:06 pm

We are moving into a new home and into a less stressful way of life! I am hoping to start cooking more healthy meals and spending less money doing so! This is especially true since, as a teacher, I am off all summer!

111 Sarah May 12, 2010 at 2:06 pm

I want to add more fresh vegetables this summer.

112 Geneva May 12, 2010 at 2:06 pm

I would love to find out how to eat more REAL food. I’ve been vegetarian for a few years now & am now a vegan, however I have a hard time cooking real food for my family. If there is any way to make kids eat Real food I’d love to hear about it.

113 Kristy May 12, 2010 at 2:07 pm

I would like to add more fruits and veggies to our diets and explore the local farmer’s markets!

114 Valerie S May 12, 2010 at 2:16 pm

I would like to eat more fruits and veggies this summer, we have our summer garden going so that should help!

116 Amanda May 12, 2010 at 2:17 pm

I am trying to eat less processed foods and more natural foods. Also, I am trying to drastically cut my artificial sugar intake too.

117 Amanda May 12, 2010 at 2:19 pm

We want to try to eat less sugar….but NOT by giving up icecream :)

118 Deb May 12, 2010 at 2:20 pm

I want to change how our family eats and since we are moving across the country I think now is the perfect time to rid ourselves of unhealthy food and start in our new home with a fresh pantry! I could really use help in how to do this!!!

119 Lynn May 12, 2010 at 2:35 pm

I want to add more fresh fruit and vegetables to our diet this summer and healthier snacks. Its just dh and I and we need to eat better.

120 Stephanie May 12, 2010 at 2:36 pm

I would like to bring more heathful go to foods to the lake this summer. We are great about meals and when we stay for longer than th weekend. I is the constant waning a popsicle an having cod go to snacks.

121 Jennifer May 12, 2010 at 2:37 pm

I almost think the summer will be easier because of all the summer veggies but we have big travel plans and most of our kids will be visiting the grandparents this summer as well so I’ll have to remember what it is to cook for only 2 and 1/2 people again! (we have 6 1/2 normally!) btw baby counts as 1/2 as he’s not a big eater yet:)

122 Elizabeth May 12, 2010 at 2:37 pm

Being pregnant leads to the temptation to say “it’s okay, I’m pregnant!” and then eat whatever I want. I’m hoping, since I’ll be pregnant for most of the summer, to work harder at eating well for my baby’s sake as well as for mine!

123 Jessica May 12, 2010 at 2:49 pm

We are going to work on buying more locally at Farmer’s Markets and growing our own.

124 Kristen May 12, 2010 at 2:52 pm

We’ve planted a garden, and will hopefully learn how to can some of our produce at the peak of freshness. Now if someone could tell me how to determine “peak of freshness”, I would be greatful!!

125 Brenda B May 12, 2010 at 2:54 pm

I would love to make easy, healthy dinners this summer. And I would love to incorparate more fresh veggie’s in our diet.

126 Kristina May 12, 2010 at 2:58 pm

I’ve been cutting out packaged foods and processed ingredients for a couple of years now, but lately i’ve been really interested in healthier sugars. I make most of the food we eat from scratch, but i’m still using white sugar. I have a feeling that’s the next thing to get a makeover in my kitchen.

127 Sarah May 12, 2010 at 2:58 pm

I try to eat healthy but am trying to eat more veggies. It takes a while to make a habit. I am trying to lower my food budge though… :)

128 Tracey May 12, 2010 at 3:06 pm

Eat more veggies! We do extremely well with fruits – in fact, we eat so much fruit that I have a hard time keeping enough of it in the house. We don’t do nearly as well with vegetables, though, so I want to incorporate more of them into our meals as well as have them for snacks.

129 Beth May 12, 2010 at 3:11 pm

I’d like to add in more fruits and vegetables and make more of my own sauces.

130 Rachel W. May 12, 2010 at 3:22 pm

More vegetables and fruits!! We never seem to have too many of them :)

131 Megan May 12, 2010 at 3:25 pm

I would like to be eating more whole grains and fewer “cracker” types of snacks…

132 Jen May 12, 2010 at 3:26 pm

I’d like to move away from processed foods. I’ve looked into refined sugar alternatives, but everything just seems a little overwhelming, this may be a way to start.

133 southern gal May 12, 2010 at 3:27 pm

It’s always easier to eat healthy when we have the garden. Fresh vegetables are wonderful.

134 Christina Burrell May 12, 2010 at 3:35 pm

I would like to add a green vegetable to every dinner and lunch.

135 Marla Y May 12, 2010 at 3:36 pm

I plan to take advantage of Farmers’ markets and fresh produce that is in season to help my family get more veggies and fruits in our diet. Thank you for the giveaway.

koinonia572001@yahoo.com

136 Sue D May 12, 2010 at 3:38 pm

I would like to improve my gardening skills and grow more of our own food this summer.

137 Teresa May 12, 2010 at 3:39 pm

We want to start incorporating more fruits and vegetables in our diet. We NEED a healthier diet, because the husband has been told he has dangerously high cholesterol. Thinking about a veg garden this year!

138 Nancy L. May 12, 2010 at 3:42 pm

I REALLY want to grow my own veggies this summer. I’ve failed at it for the past few years, but am determined to make it work this summer. With a youth pastor husband, our summer schedule is insanely busy, but I’m going to try!

139 Ashley F May 12, 2010 at 3:42 pm

I want to include more fruits and veggies into our diets

140 Stacy May 12, 2010 at 3:44 pm

We love all of the summer fruits so I would like to center our plans around what is in season.

141 Jennifer May 12, 2010 at 3:48 pm

I’d like to visit the farmers’ market more often & preserve some of the fruits & veggies we get there.

142 Donna Jackson May 12, 2010 at 3:53 pm

For health and nutrition reasons, we are going to more whole food and organic also. Coupons help, but there aren’t alot of coupons for organic and very few for produce. We are trying to shop sales and combine with coupons to help the budget. But, i will pay more for organic over junk.

143 AllieZirkle May 12, 2010 at 3:54 pm

This summer we’re eating fresh produce from our CSA!

144 Paige May 12, 2010 at 4:02 pm

I would love to have cut fruit ready to eat most of the time. I really dread doing this, but I love it when we have it!

145 Becky May 12, 2010 at 4:05 pm

Planning on buying locally grown fruits and veggies all summer long from Farmers’ Markets and farm stands. Can’t wait!

146 Jill May 12, 2010 at 4:05 pm

I’m going to make more of an effort to eat locally, which will include going to our local farmer’s market. I can’t wait!

147 Rachel May 12, 2010 at 4:05 pm

The quest to do better in our diets never ends does it? :) This summer, I’m planning to work on seriously limiting sugar intake, for my whole family. We’ll see how it goes!

148 connie May 12, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Lots of fresh fruits and sun tea :) ~C

149 Mary C. May 12, 2010 at 4:09 pm

I would love to cut out High Fructose Corn Syrup from our diets COMPLETELY

150 Kerry D. May 12, 2010 at 4:11 pm

I’d like to expand the range of whole and healthy foods our family eats, to learn new ideas and foods to expand our repertoire… AND keep costs down.

Thanks! Kerry

151 MamaHen May 12, 2010 at 4:11 pm

Please enter me! We will be eating a lot from our garden this summer.

152 Becky May 12, 2010 at 4:14 pm

I would love a copy of this book! I’ve already begun incorporating the freezer cooking, so that has helped. With two teenage boys, though, and a limited budget (I’m still a SAHM – 16 years now), it’s hard to eat nothing but organic. I’d love to do that, but it’s just not possible. This summer I hope to get my boys to eat more fresh fruit and homemade smoothies instead of the sugary snacks and drinks. I love your site! It’s very helpful and encouraging.

Oh, and by-the-way, I just gotta mention to someone who would really be proud… last month I was able to cut my grocery budget by $110… with TWO, RAVENOUS TEENAGE BOYS in the house. I worked hard at it. Freezer cooking, menu planning, and couponing WORK!!! (We’ll see if I can repeat it this month.)

153 Megan May 12, 2010 at 4:25 pm

I would love to win a copy of this book. With baby# 2 coming next month I will be looking at healthifying our diet as well in hopes of shedding some of the baby weight. I certainly want to incorporate more organic veggies into our diet which should be easy thanks to our organic garden that we planted. Hopefully I’ll even be able to drop our budget for the summer. I’m just not sure how or what to do with all the vegetables.

154 Jessica Carter May 12, 2010 at 4:29 pm

I have been having gall bladder flair ups for quite some time and finally decided enough was enough! So I began to eat smarter and MUCH healthier. Then I came across the “eat right for your blood type” diet…my husband jumped on the band wagon himself and my 3 children are along for the ride. Surprisingly, they are excited about a healthier lifestyle. Now if I just had a great book like this to pull it all together, I would be thrilled! Thanks for the chance!
PS: By the way, it has been 43 days since my last gall bladder attack AND I am 15 pounds lighter already!

155 Anne Marie May 12, 2010 at 4:30 pm

I would like to incorporate more whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables – less processed foods.

156 Jen May 12, 2010 at 4:30 pm

we garden in the summer which greatly reduces our costs. i would love to learn more about low-cost healthy eating, it’s one of our biggest challenges.

157 Kristine May 12, 2010 at 4:33 pm

Buy at the Farmer’s Market

158 Caryn May 12, 2010 at 4:35 pm

I’m also feeding a family of 8. My goal for the summer is to can/freeze/dry as much fresh produce as possible for next winter, both from our garden and the farmer’s market. At a minimum, I’d like to get a year worth of tomaoes put away. There’s nothing better than popping open a jar of tomatoes for a taste if summer in February! I’m a new reader of your blog and am enjoying expanding regular freezer cooking with some of your recipes. Thanks!

159 Lea Stormhammer May 12, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Ohhh… I’d love to win this!

We’re hoping to phase out store-bought meat this year – only buying from local meat producers. I’m also hoping to finally refine my blanching and freezing so that we don’t buy any frozen veggies from the store!

Thanks for hosting this!
Brita

160 Alyson M May 12, 2010 at 4:37 pm

I would like to add more produce to every meal!

161 Deborah K. May 12, 2010 at 4:38 pm

I would like to add more fresh produce to our dinner table. It can be so costly, and the quality so poor at some of the regular stores.

162 Elise May 12, 2010 at 4:47 pm

I would LOVE to learn how to eat REAL food on a budget! Thanks for this opportunity!

163 Beth May 12, 2010 at 4:53 pm

I am trying to introduce some new veggies and continuing to eliminate processed foods.

164 MrsH May 12, 2010 at 5:01 pm

I’m hoping to source some local eggs and meats through the farmer’s market at a neighboring town.

165 kristy May 12, 2010 at 5:07 pm

We would like to eat less processed food and more fresh fruits and vegetables. We eat a lot of vegetables but most of them are of the frozen variety. I have recently started cooking from scratch more and love it.

166 Untypically Jia May 12, 2010 at 5:08 pm

I would like to eat more vegetables and less pantry items. I’d also like to try more freezer meal cooking.

167 Becca May 12, 2010 at 5:13 pm

I have 2 young children ages 2 and 3. Their father and I are a bit over weight and want to start eating out of a garden for most of the summer. We would LOVE to have this book to help us be more healthy and be better role models for the kiddos’!

168 Marilyn K May 12, 2010 at 5:19 pm

I want to buy more bulk grains, get away from using cream soup-type casseroles, and get away from processed food in general. I am learning to use much less meat in recipes as well. The book looks great! Might need to buy it.

169 Tricia May 12, 2010 at 5:26 pm

I’d like to eat more fruits and veggies this summer and cut back on the processed stuff, especially boxed cereal.

170 Brandi H May 12, 2010 at 5:27 pm

I would like to buy more from our local farmer’s market and have more fresh veg. and fruits. Thanks for the chance to win.

171 Amanda Y. May 12, 2010 at 5:32 pm

We’re trying to incorporate more fruits and vegetables. Surprisingly, we eat healthier if we eat out, because when I cook, I never like cooking several dishes. We have made lots of stir frys because then at least the meat, vegetables, and starch are in the same pan.

172 deseray May 12, 2010 at 5:35 pm

Less artificial “food like substances”, and more fruits and vegetables

173 donna May 12, 2010 at 5:38 pm

We do a pretty good job of eating healthy meals and snacks, but we have a habbit of eating something sweet in the evening after supper. That’s our downfall.

174 Laura Aridgides May 12, 2010 at 5:39 pm

I have put in a garden for the first time this year. So, I’m hoping to eat more veggies simply because I am growing them now. I’d love to read this book!
Laura

175 Debbie May 12, 2010 at 5:43 pm

Jessica,
Your blog has already helped me sooo much from the foods you cook to freezer cooking to how you shop! I’m so grateful. I want to incorporate more fresh fruit and vegetables. We have pretty much completely cut out canned veggies. Yay! I also want to plant a garden and grow some of my own stuff. It might be hard here in HOT Arizona but its worth a try! I’d love to win this book. Thanks for the chance.

Debbie

176 Esther May 12, 2010 at 5:45 pm

I can’t wait for the warm weather so that we can eat locally–and homegrown. We really need to get the refined sugar cut down in our diet. I love to bake so that means I need to do my homework and find alternatives!

177 Noelle May 12, 2010 at 5:46 pm

We are trying to eat more local food and more humanely raised meat/poultry.

178 wendy May 12, 2010 at 5:50 pm

It’s so hard to veer away from processed foods and head for more fruits and veggies and whole grains, but I must make the effort.

179 Nancy May 12, 2010 at 5:52 pm

For summer? I need to come up with easy lunch items to have on hand for our teenage girls. In years past I’ve relied on sandwiches and frozen convenience foods as I work outside the home so they’re on their own.

180 Emily May 12, 2010 at 5:57 pm

I am trying to eat a big salad every day. yay for summer veggies!

181 Julie May 12, 2010 at 5:57 pm

I am trying to live more frugally and eat better. I have some health issues that I would like to work on with diet but really don’t know where to start!

182 Janel May 12, 2010 at 5:57 pm

I want to pay regular visits to my farmer’s market and incorporate even more fruits and veggies into our diet.

183 Amanda May 12, 2010 at 5:57 pm

My youngest has a dairy allergy and I am breastfeeding so I have been reading labels on everything, including labels I would have never thought to read. I had NO idea that bread could contain high fructose corn syrup! So, I’d like to improve my family’s eating by reading all labels and elminating as many chemicals and additives from our diet as possible.

I’ve never commented on your blog before, but I read daily, so since I commented I want to tell you two things…
1. I lived in Valencia for five years and about fell over when I saw you reference Chi Chis Pizza. And I agree, it is GOOD.
2. You inspired me to get a bread machine and I love it! :)

184 Jessica Fisher May 12, 2010 at 8:18 pm

ChiChi’s rocks, though not as much as it used to. Glad you like your bread machine!

185 Kathleen May 12, 2010 at 6:02 pm

More veggies – especially at breakfast!

186 robbie May 12, 2010 at 6:04 pm

I am trying to pare down our budget while trying to eat fresher. We’re trying to save money for the fall, when we know things will be tighter with school.

187 Bilette Kulhanek May 12, 2010 at 6:04 pm

I want to add more whole grains, less processed and sugar filled foods

188 Alicia May 12, 2010 at 6:14 pm

I’m hoping to prepare more organic foods for my family.

189 Jen May 12, 2010 at 6:16 pm

I would like for my kids to automatically reach for fresh fruit and veggies as snack instead of the crackers and chips- I’m doing better with not buying them as much but they still complain that there is “nothing to eat”.

190 Alisha May 12, 2010 at 6:16 pm

I want to eat more raw foods.

191 Shaunta May 12, 2010 at 6:25 pm

I would like to cook more from scratch. Thx to your ideas, I have stopped buying pre-mixed waffle, muffin and pancake mixes. Also, I made cream of mushroom soup. My goal is to cut out more and more processed foods.

192 Diane May 12, 2010 at 6:28 pm

Exactly what I need as we have already begun the process of switching to more whole foods and less processed foods. We’ve been doing this for about a month now, and we can already tell a difference. Whole and fresh foods are so much better!!

193 Anna Banana May 12, 2010 at 6:38 pm

Love healthy food, don’t know how to do it on a budget! Would love this book! Thanks so much!

194 rebecca May 12, 2010 at 6:45 pm

I would really love to win this. I struggle with eating healthy but still staying within our grocery budget every month.

195 Cassie May 12, 2010 at 6:49 pm

I’m growing my first garden this year–all organic–so my goal is to incoporate as much of this bounty in our meals as I can and to can or freeze the surplus.

196 Angie May 12, 2010 at 6:52 pm

Eat more fruits and veggies! Would love to win this!

197 Brandi May 12, 2010 at 6:56 pm

My family and I have been working on, with great success, making more foods from scratch and eating less processed foods. We’ve been eating many fresh fruits and vegetables. One thing that I would love to begin doing this summer is making our bread weekly. I enjoy baking and try to keep muffins, pancakes, and waffles in the freezer but never seem to have time to make bread weekly and that would be the healthiest option. Thank you for the chance to win.

198 Jen U May 12, 2010 at 6:58 pm

what a great giveaway! We’ve planted a garden … hoping to encourage the kids to eat more fresh veggies by growing our own. :)

199 mary May 12, 2010 at 6:58 pm

Working on learning how to best use freezing cooking for our family of two (ok my husband eats like 3) and make the perfect loaf of bread!

200 Sarah May 12, 2010 at 7:03 pm

I would like to do more freezer cooking to prevent us from eating convenience foods. I also need to add some more veggies into our diet.

201 Yvette May 12, 2010 at 7:04 pm

I would to read this! :)
I am hoping to add a great deal more organic produce this summer to our menus.
~Yvette

202 Katie T. May 12, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Would LOVE to win this! I’m hoping to eat more in-season fruits and veggies this summer…especially those we grow in our own garden!

203 Karisa May 12, 2010 at 7:16 pm

I am hoping the weather cooperates and we can get more produce from our garden before it freezes! Also, more ideas for healthy meals that I don’t need to do much cooking for.

204 Meggin May 12, 2010 at 7:19 pm

We have drastically changed our eating habits in the last few months. I have been working really hard to cut out most processed from our diet and include more healthy and whole foods. I am still struggling with going complete organic though, but after watching Food Inc I a determined to do it!

Thanks for all your awesome giveaways!

205 teresa May 12, 2010 at 7:22 pm

less processed foods and i’m going to try to eat less cereal (even though it is a high fiber cereal)

206 Lacy D May 12, 2010 at 7:22 pm

We moved to a new house last fall with a huge yard so are planning plant a garden. This summer I hope to eat lots of veggies from it and plan healthier meals and snacks for my family.

207 Tabitha May 12, 2010 at 7:25 pm

Over, I’d say the last two years (maybe more), we’ve been trying to go more natural and more local, I’m cooking pretty much all our meals from scratch and I try my best to find ways to make my kids snacks from scratch as well so I don’t have to buy all those prepackaged, sugar loaded snacks from the store. I’ve been pretty successful so far but if I could learn more on meal planning(to suit my family) and ways to eat healthy and frugally sign me up!

Looks like a good book!

208 Tabitha May 12, 2010 at 7:26 pm

@Tabitha, Oh yes and this summer we are hoping to be able to go to a local farm and pick lots of fresh veggies to can or freeze to have over the winter months :)

209 Becky May 12, 2010 at 7:28 pm

We eat a lot of fresh fruits and veggies in the spring and summer but I would love to know how to incorporate my local or organic produce during the fall and winter months. Sounds like a great book!

210 Kora Lehmann May 12, 2010 at 7:31 pm

We are going to start eating more fruits and veggies. 5 a day is a hard goal to reach!

211 Gail May 12, 2010 at 7:32 pm

This summer I’m digging for recipes (I’ve already found a some!) so I can cut out a ton of pre-packaged convenience items. I also want to start making more of our own bread. Anything and everything to make lunches for next school year more healthy and appealing. (I have packed one lunch to take to school this year and next year I’ll be doing at least 2-one for each of boy and…I might be going back to school as well, so there’s 3!)

212 Julie Young May 12, 2010 at 7:34 pm

Ive been preparing “real food” for a while now. Some of the folks in my fam think I am crazy. Anything that can help with new ideas would be great!!

213 Maria T Owens May 12, 2010 at 7:40 pm

I do cook and freeze all the meals.

I would like to try new foods with vegetable to help my daughter eat more vegetables and greens.

Maria T O

214 Shelly Shown May 12, 2010 at 7:40 pm

My kids need to eat more fresh veggies! We’re great on fruits… veggies… not so much.

215 Jaime May 12, 2010 at 7:53 pm

Sounds like a great book! I would love to find quick fix meals that I can have on hand so we aren’t tempted by the drive-thrus when time is tight.

216 Nicole- Chasing Blue May 12, 2010 at 8:05 pm

This summer I want to do as much local and organic shopping is possible and I really want to start making a lot of our foods from scratch. I’m starting to “wean” my kids off of processed foods and I love it. They have so much energy now.

217 Sara May 12, 2010 at 8:17 pm

I want to get more fresh veggies, and less pasta into our diet. I used to be a runner and eat a lot of pastas (I love them and they stayed in my diet even though a knee injury prevents me from running as much), and my husband is a eater that doesn’t like change. I would like for my daughter to grow up eating good fresh veggies, so we need to make a change.

218 Katie May 12, 2010 at 8:20 pm

I feel like I am kind of getting the couponing thing down and have now started once a month cooking so I think for this summer I would like to delve more into the aspect of buying in bulk. Whether its grains, pastas, spices, etc. I think I have alot to learn in that area.

219 Shannon May 12, 2010 at 8:28 pm

I need to meal plan a lot better. Oh, and how do you get rid of a sweet tooth?

220 Kelly May 12, 2010 at 8:56 pm

This year I am making a change with the meals I make for my family. I have tons of recipe books and my family and myself are tired of the same thing all the time. So what my husband and I are doing is every 2 weeks we pick out dinners from the books and write up our shopping list based on the recipes we have chosen. The recipes we like I write down for future meals. I do the freezer cooking twice a month when we get home from the grocery store and I do try to base the recipes we make on the sales in the stores along with the coupons I use to save money. I would love this book for some new ideas on saving money when it comes to our budget.

221 Crystal Hankey May 12, 2010 at 8:58 pm

This summer I’m planting my first container garden. I can’t wait for all the yummy veggies. We bought a fixer upper house last year and now have our own apple and apricot trees. I have an awesome farmers market once a week just down the road. I can’t wait to cut our the processed foods (in fact I’ve already started) and learn to do some freezer cooking and mixes. I have health challenges and hope all these positive changes help.

222 Christina H May 12, 2010 at 9:03 pm

I think this is the book I’ve been looking for! I feel I can either have a heathly diet or a low grocery bill, but how to do both?

223 Alycia M May 12, 2010 at 9:11 pm

This sounds like a great book! I’m just beginning to make the changes in our lifestyle to allow for more wholesome choices. We’ve been working on not eating out as much. Next, I’d like to reduce the amount of processed food that’s coming into the house.

224 Jessica M. May 12, 2010 at 9:11 pm

I’ve recently started some veggie plants with my 3 1/2 yr. old twin boys…and we’re hoping to start our first garden soon. I always feel like we eat better in the summer w/ all the fresh fruits and veggies from local farm markets and doing lots of grilling. I’m hoping though that growing their own veggies will get my boys to eat more of them. I’m also really interested in doing some canning/freezing of all the great summer fruits and vegetables to enjoy throughout the rest of the year. Have never done it myself, but am thinking that THIS is the year to do it~

225 Sara May 12, 2010 at 9:16 pm

I need to start eating the things I feed my son…oatmeal and berries instead of Honey Bunches of Oats, etc. :-)

226 Christine May 12, 2010 at 9:17 pm

I would like to eat more protein and more fruits and vegetables.

227 Angela May 12, 2010 at 9:20 pm

I think I need to take the plunge into freezer cooking. I’ve had the hardest time with my meal planning for the past month or so…

228 Georgette May 12, 2010 at 9:22 pm

I’d like to increase the amount of vegetables my family eats.

229 Maranda May 12, 2010 at 9:32 pm

I have been trying to cook healthy all year. It is difficult to do saw in a frugal manner. I would love some help with it.

230 Jennifer May 12, 2010 at 9:42 pm

I want to try to incorporate new veggies and fruits we haven’t had much experience with to see if we all might find a new favorite.

231 Ronna May 12, 2010 at 9:50 pm

When the weather gets hot its all about stuff off the grill and cool salads.

232 Amber May 12, 2010 at 9:51 pm

I am looking to add more veggies into our everyday meals. It’s so easy for us to do fruit, but veggies…..not as easy.

233 alison May 12, 2010 at 9:57 pm

i would like to improve my eating this summer by planning out my meals to make sure to include a well rounded diet. i overload on carbs and lack in the protein department. or i overload on fruits and lack veggies. balanced diet is my goal! thanks for the chance to win.

234 Emma May 12, 2010 at 10:02 pm

I would love to win this book! I’m already trying to cook healthy dinners, but it’s the rest of the day that has me defeated at the moment. I’d love some inspiration there.

235 Erika Felt May 12, 2010 at 10:13 pm

I have four boys: 15, 12, 10 and 4yrs old. I also run a small in-home preschool. These facts alone would dictate that I need to learn how to feed healthy food as inexpensively as possible. Add to the equation that my 15yr old was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes Type I when he was 9yrs old and well, I need to learn all I can.

The older they get, the more they grow and the more they eat. I have thought about not feeding them and then perhaps they’d stop growing but their father said that as tempting as that may be…I still need to feed them lol

It is so easy and less expensive to keep processed foods in the home but with that convenience comes stress and guilt. We all want the best for our children but I seem to not be able to afford to eat the way we should all the time. I’m a child of the 70′s and grew up on natural and whole foods…I really want the same for my children and the children I care for.

I’d love to have this book! It would be good for the kids’ physical health and an incredible boost to my mental health LOL

236 maritezg May 12, 2010 at 10:20 pm

I have recently stopped buying bread products from the store. All of them are now made at home from scratch…much healthier & much cheaper too! We love our fruits! Now, we need to work on loving our veggies just as much :)

237 stefanie May 12, 2010 at 10:22 pm

I would like to incorporate a more vegan diet into my summer menu as i try to have a successful garden again this year. Really try to become self-sustainable to reduce my carbon footprint and improve the health and livlihood of my family.

238 Debbie May 12, 2010 at 10:28 pm

I would love to eat more local and incorporate more organic foods into our diet without breaking our grocery budget!

239 Bronwen May 12, 2010 at 10:38 pm

I would love ideas about how to feed my two teenagers this summer food they and their friends would like that are quick for them but not pizza, pizza rolls , chips etc.

240 Lisa May 12, 2010 at 10:48 pm

Our family eats a lot of processed foods and sugary ones too. I think we need to incorporate more veggies and fruits and summer is a great time to start!

241 karen miller May 12, 2010 at 11:18 pm

I would like to get our family to eat healthier.

242 Lorie May 13, 2010 at 12:27 am

eat more plant based foods & less meat

243 Kathleen May 13, 2010 at 12:32 am

I would like to start cooking with less processed and high sugar foods and more healthy fruits and vegetables. It’s a struggle, that’s for sure.

244 Wendy May 13, 2010 at 3:20 am

I have been slowly working to improve our eating habits too. This summer I want to focus on local produce and I want to find at least couple recipes that my family actually *likes* that are made with whole grain flour. So far, I have not been very successful at that. :-)

245 Julie May 13, 2010 at 3:49 am

We are so busy running to soccer and baseball games and tournaments over the summer that we make food choices out of convenience rather than based on nutrition (or cost). That is something we need to work on this summer. Healthier, budget-friendly choices. Thanks!

246 Kim O. May 13, 2010 at 4:02 am

We already eat pretty healthy, but for the summer, I’m going to add more whole grains and sneak them into some surprising dishes! You never know what will be in that cookie.
Thanks for the chance

247 jacinda walker May 13, 2010 at 4:05 am

I would like to be able to eat more meal type foods instead of junk food all the time- like making more things from scratch :)

248 Jennifer Ort May 13, 2010 at 4:10 am

The neverending battle in our home is getting our kids to eat vegetables, especially green ones!

249 Laurie L May 13, 2010 at 4:15 am

I want to start taking steps to cut out high fructose corn syrup. We’ve started trying to use ketchup and other “daily” staples that are HFCS free, and want to work towards cutting out more foods with it.

250 Sara Jane May 13, 2010 at 4:16 am

I am trying to buy more organic produce. This is hard as we live in a small town with only 2 grocery stores and no health food stores. I’m not going to give up though! I just need to figure out what to cut to make up for the extra expense until my garden starts providing it for me.

251 Christy May 13, 2010 at 4:19 am

I want to include more fresh fruits and vegetables from our local farmer’s market this summer. I also want to buy fresh food to freeze for the winter.

252 Nicole May 13, 2010 at 4:23 am

I love fresh fruits and vegetables. We have a bigger garden this year, and hope to have a bigger harvest. We also love going to the local farmers market.

253 Katie Waggoner May 13, 2010 at 4:34 am

We are trying out a CSA forthe first time, along with our garden.

254 kelly May 13, 2010 at 4:38 am

Goals for the summer…. so many!! #1 will be to use all the veggies that I will be planting. I started so many from seed with huge goals but forgot the small garden we have. Going to container alot of them. But hubby & I are losing weight so using fresh will be important to us. We need to set an example for our 7 year old. While she is uber active now :) – she is starting to pick up our bad habits. I would love to find ways to actually save money while eating fresh. Produce is the largest portion next to meat on our grocery bill. Trying to eat healthy is turning to be more expensive :(

255 Debbi Does Dinner Healthy May 13, 2010 at 4:55 am

We have already stopped eating out which has helped a lot but I am still trying to get rid of the processed stuff in the house. Mainly for the kids not me, I’ve been doing better but I tend not to cook as good for them as they are more picky. Trying to change that while keeping costs low. Great giveaway, thanks!

256 Mandy May 13, 2010 at 4:57 am

I want to add more vegetables and healthier snacks to our diet!

257 M May 13, 2010 at 4:57 am

I would love to introduce different fruits and veggies into my children’s diet!

258 Karen May 13, 2010 at 5:00 am

I’d like to incorporate more locally grown food into our meals. I think its important to support your local organic farmers. I would love a hard-copy of this book!

259 Andrea May 13, 2010 at 5:04 am

Right now I have two main goals ~ eat less preservatives (making more from scratch) and lower my monthly food bill!

260 Kimberly May 13, 2010 at 5:17 am

I would like to incorporate more fruits and vegetables.

261 Keri Tidwell May 13, 2010 at 5:22 am

We have a small garden in the backyard where we grow a variety of types of peppers, tomatoes, squash, zucchini and cucumbers, so we will be eating fresh, organic vegetables. I love not having to pay for them!

262 Marlene May 13, 2010 at 5:29 am

Our family has joined a CSA to expand our vegetable horizon and feel more connected to the local food sources by establishing that personal connection.

263 Nicole May 13, 2010 at 5:30 am

I’d like to actually use all of the ‘good’ foods I buy. I tend to buy too much in the way of perishables and then end up throwing it out when it doesn’t get used up quickly enough. So frustrating.

264 amybee May 13, 2010 at 5:43 am

Thank you for the opportunity! We are trying to incorporate more whole grains, less meat and more fruits and veggies (easy in the summer) into our diet.

265 Jeanette May 13, 2010 at 5:45 am

I’d love to grow a successful, varied garden this year.

266 Eileen May 13, 2010 at 5:46 am

Having a mom w/alz & parkinsons and learning they are both food/diet related has led me to want to feed my family healthier nonprocecssed foods. Would love to win this book in order to learn more.

267 THERESA A May 13, 2010 at 5:47 am

I am trying to make a change in my family’s eating habits without killing my budget..hopefully this book could really help me!

268 Coley May 13, 2010 at 5:52 am

I would love to add more fresh veggies to our diet. We’ve planted our first garden this year in hopes of achieving this goal.

269 Sheila May 13, 2010 at 5:52 am

We are doing our best to move towards “whole” foods rather than processed foods. It’s more challenging than I thought, but this looks like an awesome resource!

270 Julie May 13, 2010 at 5:57 am

More variety (hard when dh is a picky eater), more fresh, more local, more menu planning and freezer cooking!!

271 Sonda May 13, 2010 at 6:06 am

I would like to get my family more interested in vegetables.

272 michelle May 13, 2010 at 6:20 am

My goal this summer is to have at least one fruit or vegetable with every meal, and to get me children to do the same!!

273 Mary May 13, 2010 at 6:29 am

I really want to improve our diet and overall health, and we are on a limited budget with our first baby due in July. This book would be so helpful!

274 Sandi May 13, 2010 at 6:31 am

We’re pretty good about getting in our fruits and veggies, but I want to include more heart healthy meats and still keep within my food budget. This book sounds great!

275 Michelle May 13, 2010 at 6:40 am

There are so many things I would like to change that what I really need is a baby step guide – start here and then do this.

276 melinda May 13, 2010 at 6:44 am

I would like to have more meals with fresh, local produce making up the bulk of the meal.

277 Caitlin May 13, 2010 at 6:51 am

This summer I’d like to keep up better with making my own popsicles.

278 Emily May 13, 2010 at 6:54 am

I’d love to find a way to make healthy food SIMPLER. I feel like I’m always cooking 4 course meals with dishes to match!

279 dawn May 13, 2010 at 6:57 am

This book looks wonderful! I would LOVE to win it. The one thing I am doing is beginning to find vegetarian recipes to use. I’m also planting my own garden, so that I can use the veggies I plant in the recipes. :) Thanks for this give-away!

280 Mary May 13, 2010 at 7:08 am

I have been wanting this book!

I am working on feeding my family all natural foods. Nothing from a box or with any weird chemicals in the ingredients. And less sweeteners.

281 Thayer May 13, 2010 at 7:15 am

Thanks for the giveaway offer! I am getting started on freezer cooking, this would be a great jump start.

282 Chris Smith May 13, 2010 at 7:31 am

Try to preserve more things from our garden this summer, to use over the winter.

283 laura May 13, 2010 at 7:31 am

i want to work on eating more whole foods and less processed junk.

284 Laura May 13, 2010 at 7:36 am

I’m planning on adding lots of local fruits and veggies to our meals this summer.

285 Tara May 13, 2010 at 7:54 am

Would love to win this! We are beginning meetings with a dietician, and removing most processed foods from our diet–could use some help along the way!

286 Melissa May 13, 2010 at 7:54 am

I would like to eat more fruits.

287 Vicki May 13, 2010 at 7:57 am

I’m trying more freezer cooking, we’re growing a garden, incorporating more veggies, and eating smaller portions. This book sounds like it might be really helpful.

288 Jessica Harwood May 13, 2010 at 7:58 am

I am hoping to cut out a lot of sugars/carbs {a pre-insulin resistance condition makes this quite necessary} & eating more fruits, veggies and whole grains. I’m expecting our first baby in July and I’d like to get back into shape – and my regular jeans – as soon as possible!

289 Michelle - IA May 13, 2010 at 7:59 am

I want to continue to clean up the foods we eat and add more whole foods, as in grains, fruits and vegetables. Also would like to do more freezer cooking, I did well over the winter but have slacked off this spring.

290 Pam Howard May 13, 2010 at 8:00 am

Wow – I’d love to win this. We are adding more fresh “clean” foods into our diet, and plan to continue to do so this summer. I’d like to wean the kids away from processed “treats” and make more of them myself. I’ve also started buying organic meats – I just buy whatever is on sale at Whole Foods and we plan our menu around that.

291 Dayna May 13, 2010 at 8:09 am

I would like to incorporate more produce into our diets & try new things!

292 trisha May 13, 2010 at 8:15 am

Oh gosh, where to start? We’ve planted a garden and I took the plunge and ordered some of the “good fats.” I’m wanting to do some canning and get away from the store-bought canned goods. Wanting to do more veggies and variety and try out the grill more this summer.

Biggest challenge I’m having right now is getting used to the WHOLE grain taste (grain mill/grinding my own flour, yes using hard white). Thought I’d dive in, but think I need to step back and perhaps do half/half for awhile.

293 JESSI HANSEN May 13, 2010 at 8:23 am

I’d really like to eat more local fresh veggies

294 Jennifere May 13, 2010 at 8:34 am

Well this year we planted a cherry tree and strawberry plants. We are trying to grow more of our own food because that way we can make sure they are organic.

295 Melissa May 13, 2010 at 8:37 am

I’m going to be serving more fruits, veggies, and whole grains! I want my kids to eat more than just hot dogs!

296 Cherith May 13, 2010 at 8:46 am

I am also taking baby steps to eat a healthier diet on a decent budget…can’t wait to read this book!

297 rose May 13, 2010 at 9:02 am

I’d love to incorporate more vegetables into our diet. Don’t get me wrong, compared to most families with tweens and teens, we eat VERY healthy. We rarely eat out and I make a lot from scratch. However, I would like a few more veggie ideas!

298 Sarah May 13, 2010 at 9:02 am

I need to incorporate more vegetables into our diet this summer. It is so important and something I used to be good at but I have fallen out of the habit.

299 Marianna May 13, 2010 at 9:08 am

I’m going through a divorce – so I’d love to be able to get a new start on life. Changing my eating habits now would be a great part of that – right now, our eating habits are horrible (my children and I). We’re more likely to run through the drive thru and grab a burger and fries than sit down to a healthy, home cooked meal. I need help! Thanks!

300 Jenny May 13, 2010 at 9:30 am

More vegies from our CSA box and my own plantings! Trying to eat less meat.

301 Kelly Hess May 13, 2010 at 9:53 am

I would love to incorporate more veggies in my cooking. My husband is such a meat eater and it seems like ALL of our meals include meat as the main entree. Can I get away from that and still make him happy?

302 Heather May 13, 2010 at 9:58 am

My goal for the summer is to incorporate more whole grains and become purposeful about baking my own bread!

Thanks,
Heather

303 BrownThumbMama May 13, 2010 at 10:00 am

Since my Dad has been in the hospital, we’ve been eating on the run (and eating out) much too often. I would love to learn more about healthy eating on the go!

304 Heather May 13, 2010 at 10:02 am

I will be working hard to provide healthier snacks for the kids. I will also be trying to cut back on my soda intake. Thanks for the giveaway chance!

305 Connie Corey May 13, 2010 at 10:10 am

We are trying to eat more foods from local sources.

306 Heather ODonnell May 13, 2010 at 10:23 am

This year we decided to become a member of a local CSA to get some extra veggies, including some that we normally wouldn’t try. I am also trying my hand at a small garden…although our late snow (last weekend) may have put an end to my efforts.

307 Sharon May 13, 2010 at 10:24 am

I’m always looking for a more healthier way to feed my family. Very interested in this book!

308 Lee May 13, 2010 at 10:44 am

We have been cooking a lot more from scratch, although I have to admit, love my jarred spaghetti sauce, and my breakfast cereal. :)

309 Courtney May 13, 2010 at 10:47 am

I would love to incorporate more veggies grown in our garden and fresh fruit.

310 Dory May 13, 2010 at 11:21 am

I have two growing boys and I would love to introduce healthy eating habits and not go bankrupt!!

311 Tricia May 13, 2010 at 11:30 am

A great friend of mine challenged me to at least incorporate a super food once a day for all the bad food I might eat. I like this idea.

312 Julie Gillen May 13, 2010 at 11:34 am

Sounds like a great read – would love to get ideas to incorporate a healthier diet, as we’ve just lost weight and want to keep it that way!!

313 Ramie May 13, 2010 at 11:45 am

I have three teens and a variety of their friends that I feed multiple times a week. I am very interested in a more healthy eating style because the price of convenience foods is too extreme for my budget. Thanks for letting me enter.

314 Genevieve W May 13, 2010 at 11:55 am

Keeping healthy, cold treats around the house so we’re not tempted by the ice cream store and 4 dollar smoothies!

315 sheila May 13, 2010 at 12:01 pm

. . . eat smaller portions and do better in the garden so that I can freeze and can more food for the winter.

316 Carol D. May 13, 2010 at 12:13 pm

I’m hoping to move my family into a more automatic habit of reaching for fruits and veggies to snack on (and reduce the habit of whining, “Why don’t you ever buy chips anymore?”)! :)

317 Katie May 13, 2010 at 12:17 pm

Looks helpful! I too want to eat organically, etc. but it’s just so expensive!

318 Leah May 13, 2010 at 12:21 pm

We have saved up to purchase our own grain mill, so many more whole grains on the horizon…I would like to incorporate more than wheat.

We are also working to keep up with our garden and want to preserve lots more to get us farther through the winter.

I’d love the book!!!

319 Catherine May 13, 2010 at 12:22 pm

Less refined sugar, more veggies, more water!

320 Emily May 13, 2010 at 12:23 pm

I want to frequent the local farmers market this summer and introduce my toddler to other veggies beside green beans and broccoli. That’s all he seems to like right now.

321 Amanda May 13, 2010 at 12:29 pm

We have started trying to eat healthier/more organic, but it is a challenge with the expense! Summertime does make it easier because produce is better/cheaper, and thanks to the internet I am finding fun and healthy and easy recipes. I would love to win this book!

322 Kathy Gray May 13, 2010 at 12:41 pm

I do a lot of couponing and that leads to us eating quite a bit of processed foods. My husband and I would both like to figure out how we can change our diets without it costing us a lot more in the checkout lane!

323 NerdMom May 13, 2010 at 1:06 pm

I do a fair amount of cooking from scratch but we need more vegetation and whole grains in our diet!!!

324 Amber May 13, 2010 at 1:24 pm

This would be great! We are doing so much better about not eating processed foods, but I would love it if we could get rid of soda (gasp!), finally call the lady about raw milk and get some more ideas for truly healthy meals ’cause I’m running out!

325 Laura May 13, 2010 at 1:38 pm

I saw this ebook on another blog and would love to get my hands on a copy! I’ve made a lot of progress, but we still have so far to go. My goal is for our diets to consist of 90% whole foods in their pure form (shopping at Sprouts has really helped me work towards this goal!). I’d aim for 100%, but who am I kidding? With our sweeth teeth, there’s no way that’s gonna happen. :-)

326 Tracy Stone May 13, 2010 at 1:49 pm

I’m working on adding more fish, especially salmon and tuna. I need to get my son to try sardines, too!

327 Kristi May 13, 2010 at 2:02 pm

Our family eats way to much processed foods. So this would be a good start. I think this year I want to hit the farmers markets more and freeze the fresh produce for winter.

328 Ann May 13, 2010 at 2:16 pm

I NEED to incorporate more veggies in our diet – and a good variety of them too.

329 Mandy May 13, 2010 at 2:20 pm

We’re trying to change our eating habits – more homemade, less processed. Our biggest problem now is that I can’t just “whip up” something and I haven’t started freezer cooking (altho I know I probably should). So I need to get better at planning ahead and preparing for the lazy or hectic days.

330 Betsy May 13, 2010 at 2:26 pm

I want to get away from packaged snack foods like crackers and cookies – which is har for us! :)

331 Laura May 13, 2010 at 2:33 pm

Lots of veggies straight from the garden!

332 Nikki May 13, 2010 at 2:45 pm

More fruits and especially vegetables. I’ve got my garden growing, and I hope seeing the green beans coming from it will inspire my not-quite-four-year old daughter to eat them.

333 Dorothy Vande Kieft May 13, 2010 at 3:25 pm

We’re trying to buy fewer processed foods and we planted a much larger garden in our baby step towards healthier eating. :)

334 Mary May 13, 2010 at 4:19 pm

I’d like to do more cooking without prepared foods. It was not as hard in the winter for me, as I was always cold and cooking is warm. I have already noticed I’m more and more reluctant to be in the kitchen heat, however.

335 Dana May 13, 2010 at 4:19 pm

I want to eat more veggies from the farmers market. And prepare them healthily.

336 TaylorBunch May 13, 2010 at 4:46 pm

Eating more fruits and veggies :)

337 Leigh May 13, 2010 at 5:03 pm

We joined a CSA this year, really hoping that it is a great investment.

338 kelly May 13, 2010 at 5:39 pm

My husband has cancer and I know eating more whole foods would be a great benefit to him and the rest of us. Thanks!

339 Jill W May 13, 2010 at 5:58 pm

I’m working on cutting down (but not out completely) the sweets that my family consumes.

340 kathleen May 13, 2010 at 6:18 pm

We are working on adding more fresh fruits and veggies thus summer while they are fresh and local. We are going ti take the kids to pick your own to get. Them involved in choosing what we eat.

341 Saralyn May 13, 2010 at 6:34 pm

We’re having to do a pocketbook reality check at the moment. For the last year we’ve been eating uber healthy but in doing so have not put anything in savings. Do you know how expensive pastured chickens are? Something’s gotta give here! I’d love to read this resource!

342 Patti May 13, 2010 at 6:46 pm

I have planted herbs this year and am looking for recipes which use them. I planted those I like to use but want more ideas – maybe you could do a post about them this summer?

343 Tisha May 13, 2010 at 6:51 pm

i would like our family to eat more veg. and fruit and less junk.

344 Traci May 13, 2010 at 7:23 pm

We have fallen into the processed food trap, and I would love some guidelines for climbing out and eating healthier! I have been cooking more from scratch lately, and the family has been receptive. I would love to get ahold of this book for more ideas for feeding my family better!

345 Leslie May 13, 2010 at 7:50 pm

My goal this summer is to try to shop our local farmers market for as much of our food as possible. My ultimate goal is to be able to preserve as much produce as I can for the rest of the year. But my main purpose is to try to knock out as many processed foods as possible.

346 Aya May 13, 2010 at 9:33 pm

My hopes for this summer is to buy only organic of the dirty dozen and use up the meat out of our freezer so I can begin getting grass-fed beef, etc.

347 Donna May 13, 2010 at 10:07 pm

Changing our eating habits is a slow progress. Encouragement is welcomed!

348 Vanessa May 14, 2010 at 1:59 am

I would like to decrease our spending this summer.

349 Linda May 14, 2010 at 4:43 am

We don’t eat too many process foods here. I do need to get back to making all our own bread. And work on the snacks. Those are the 2 tings we really need to change.

350 Morgan May 14, 2010 at 6:08 am

I want to keep my budget in check! I spend way too much at the grocery store when I don’t buy processed foods.

351 Rebecca May 14, 2010 at 6:42 am

We have been making strides to eat healthier and I actually think it’s easier in the summer, with fresh fruits and veggies. Would love to win, read it and learn more!

352 Jennifer May 14, 2010 at 7:01 am

I’m currently facing some major health concerns and want to incorporate even fewer processed foods into our diet.

353 Amy May 14, 2010 at 7:53 am

I’ve gotten in a bad habit of making dinners from a box…I’d like to get back to healthier whole foods!

354 bridget May 14, 2010 at 8:21 am

i would like to avoid foods with lots of preservatives.

355 Abigail Berthold May 14, 2010 at 9:37 am

I love summer! And summer cooking. We always grill move during the summer. And eat more salads with fresh veggies/fruits from the local market. :) I’m excited for them to open up soon.

356 Terra Jones May 14, 2010 at 10:21 am

I’m pregnant with #3 and always become anemic while pregnant. I would love to naturally fight this this summer as opposed to taking those horrid iron supplements!

thanks for the chance!

357 Janet May 14, 2010 at 10:49 am

I am focusing on eating more fruits & veggies. Thanks for the giveaway!

358 Tara May 14, 2010 at 11:23 am

I really want to incorporate more fruits and veggies into our everyday meals…and not cooked completely down until all the good stuff is no longer there. I’ve just discovered that my girls love cucumber slices…they call them ‘pickles’! :)

359 s May 14, 2010 at 11:44 am

I would like to prepare and eat healthful and interesting salads this summer!

360 Lisa May 14, 2010 at 12:37 pm

I would like to get back to more fresh fruit and vegetables.

361 Melanie May 14, 2010 at 1:50 pm

I’m trying very hard to get away from as much processed food as possible and making as many of our breads as I have time for.

362 Katy P May 14, 2010 at 2:16 pm

I’d like to consume less sugar and eat more fruits!

363 kriswithmany May 14, 2010 at 3:03 pm

I’m mostly focused on cutting costs. I think we eat pretty healthy. I want to stop buying cold cereal and sandwich bread.

364 Myra May 14, 2010 at 3:06 pm

I’d like to eat more vegetables this year in not only lunch and dinner but also in breakfast. I am loving steamed spinach in my scrambled eggs with red peppers, onion and fontina cheese.

My healthier habit for this summer is to go to our wonderful farmers market at least once a week. I want to show my kids how beautiful the fresh food looks (they’re learning how it taste as I’ve started shopping there two weeks ago).

We’ve made baby steps toward more healthy eating, I’d love to keep moving forward without becoming so overwhelmed with it all!

I continue this struggle. Go organice for double the price and make sacrifices elsewhere in the food budget or just buy the conventional strawberries on sale? It is an internal struggle every week at the grocery store.

As a mom of 7 I try really hard to find healthy food that does not cost a fortune. Processed freezer food is so easy for me to pop in the oven or microwave and I really want to move away from that.I have type 2 diabetes and have been slowly changing how I cook and what I buy to eat.It runs rapid in my family and I really do not want my children to have to go thru daily what I do.

I have been working towards healthier meals for my family. This would be a great cookbook to help me in that direction. I mainly want to use more fresh foods and less processed foods. This ebook looks really good.

I want to keep looking for new ways to cut our food budget down, but still have meals my kids will eat!

My baby girl is starting on table food now. I am a junk food junkie and don’t want my daughter to follow in my foot steps. We’re trying to keep a lot of fruits and veggies in the fridge to snack on throughout the day. And I’ve been trying ot remember to add a tossed salad to our meals too.

I would LOVE to win this. You have no idea! Every time I really focus the family on eating healthy, I have to scale back because our food bill goes up to high. I would love to know what I am doing wrong!

As for how we hope to improve our health, I really want to reduce the weekend errand eating. That seems to be where the bulk of our junk food eating happens.

As the mom of a toddler, I’d really love to start her out eating right. I want her to try all foods offered to her and hopefully eat healthily as she grows!

I have about 15 more pounds to lose, so I want to cut back on fat and calories this morning. And eat lots of vegetables and fruit.
