Real Food on a Real Budget: A Giveaway

If you’ve been reading here awhile, you know that I am currently on a mission to healthify my family’s diet as well as keep our grocery budget low. This is no small feat!

We currently spend $500-600 a month to feed our family of 8. A lot of this is thanks to couponing and cooking from scratch. Freezer cooking has helped greatly to keep my costs low. And my pantry is starting to change a little. I realize, though, that as I make the move to incorporate more organic foods, more whole grains, and fewer processed foods, that I could be up against higher totals at the checkout.

I’ve heard that many of you desire the same things and face a similar challenge. That is why I am so pleased to share today’s giveaway with you.

Stephanie Langford, also known as Keeper of the Home, has written an extremely profession, well-thought out volume, entitled Real Food on a Real Budget: How to Eat Healthy for Less.

In this book, Stephanie addresses the myriad of ways to provide your family with good eats, including meal planning, cooking from scratch, buying in bulk, food preservation, using coupons, and growing your own. It’s a well-thought out tome.

Stephanie has not only put together the most professional-looking ebook I’ve ever seen, but she has crafted a go-to resource for those who want to eat well, enjoy good health, and “act their wage.” I’m looking forward to implementing many of her recommendations in the coming months and years.

(Yes, I need to do these things in baby steps.)

  1. I think we’re pretty good about not eating processed foods. But I’d like to cut down on these even more (except for my breakfast cereal!).

  3. I’d like to find some variation of vegetable that my child will eat. Right now, juice is the ONLY way she gets ANY!

  4. I have a daughter who only eats home-canned green beans and frozen homemade applesauce for her vegetables and fruits. This summer I would really like to get her to enjoy more variety in fruits and vegetables.

  6. I do a pretty good job of cooking and eating healthy, but summertime is always hard. It’s hot and I would rather be outside playing in the water than cooking in a hot kitchen. I’m hoping to find some good meals that will help me overcome this problem and continue to feed my family healthy foods.

    I’ve just discovered the freezer cooking thing. I’m starting small but it makes a difference for the nights I don’t want to cook. I’d like to cut down on the night when we run out and grab something b/c we’re busy or lazy. I think maybe trying to eat healthier all together might put us all in the kitchen and bring some more variety into our dinnertime.

    My youngest son has been referred to a pediatric gastroenterologist for a very sensitive stomach and small weight gain. I would love to learn how to feed my family healthier for his sake.

    Right now we mostly eat processed foods and occassionally have time to cook from scratch. I would like to flip that so that most of the time we’re cooking from scratch. I think it might help if I try the freezer cooking. :)

I would love to find way to get my kids to eat more fruits and veggies (we are doing so much better already, but could always improve).     my husband & i are planning to move 8 hrs away this summer, and i’m concerned our eating habits are going to suffer with our busyness. we do have a garden planted, so we’ll have plenty of fresh veggies! :-)

    We already eat pretty healthy but there is always room for improvement:)) However, keeping our food budget down for 7 people is quite the challenge here, as well as variety. Due to this fact, I am open to being taught even more ways on eating healthy and frugal at the same time.

  34. My family and I have joined a Run Club that is part of our homeschool group. We meet on Mondays for a group run with the club and run daily as a family. We are following Hal Higdon 5-K Training Program for the Novice and are on week 6 of our training with race day on Saturday, May 22, 2010. We are very excited to have made it this far since we have never done an exercise program before and we have been able to keep to our commitment so far. I guess we were all ready to do something about our weight and fitness and that have helped us be successful.

    We are very excited that we can do an exercise program as a family that has such a great goal at the end. As a family we are happy to be able to combine our commitment to volunteerism and our newfound enthusiasm for running by participating in the Loving Care 5K Run/Walk as our first race. My husband and I will be walking and our kids will be jogging as we aim our sights to the finish line.

    We have not started dieting but are watching what we eat by adding healthy food choices and cutting down on unhealthy choices and extra snacking. I am considering getting some weight watchers recipes off the Internet. My family will not like me putting them all on a diet so I may be adding one or two recipes a week to my menu plan and see how it goes. The recipes would have to be consistent with what I would normally serve and not taste like diet food. I am going to try avoiding eating out at restaurants or try lighter menu options when I do. I cook from scratch and we don’t eat a lot of processed foods but do need to add more whole grains.

    My goals for the summer are to improve our eating as by starting freezer cooking, eliminating HFCS from our household, and by getting out and visiting the farmers market more often. We are big vegetable eaters in my family but all of us could stand to up our fruit intake, even if it is home-made smoothies.

  44. Always, we’re trying to eat more fruits and vegetables. I also want to eat less meat, so I need to find ways to make beans more appealing to my children. They will eat some beans/recipes really well, but not all. And my husband wants me to make more things with a lower glycemic index–something I don’t know much about.

    Hands down for me, is kicking the soda habit. 40-60 oz a day have done a number on me. That is my place to start.

Right now I am slowly working on changing to more natural sweeteners and am looking into finding affordable sources for organic meat. She has already inspired me to change so many things.     Hi! I am taking HFCS out of our diet. Then processed foods. I have started buying a few organics as I can afford to…. we feel better already! I would love to know how to save some $ doing so!

  65. i’d like to try more vegetarian recipes. we eat meat (my husband LOVES it) but for budget and health reasons i would like to scale back and still have tasty recipes where he won’t miss the meat!

  66. We have been doing more and more to make our foods more healthy. We buy mostly all organic and bake all of our breads ourselves. We are even making our own cleansers and soaps, but that is getting off topic. We spend about twice as much as you do, but perhaps some of that has to do with the fact we have two teens that can’t have casein (milk proteins) and gluten (wheat, etc.). I am hungry, pardon the expression, to learn more about what I can do to both save money and live a more healthy lifestyle.

    I’d love to win! This is just the book I need. I think I’m in the same spot you are….just beginning my Real Food journey and I don’t have extra money to spend. The biggest thing I’ve tackled now is to save up to buy a portion of a local, grass-fed cow.

    I would like to bring more heathful go to foods to the lake this summer. We are great about meals and when we stay for longer than th weekend. I is the constant waning a popsicle an having cod go to snacks.

I almost think the summer will be easier because of all the summer veggies but we have big travel plans and most of our kids will be visiting the grandparents this summer as well so I’ll have to remember what it is to cook for only 2 and 1/2 people again!     Being pregnant leads to the temptation to say “it’s okay, I’m pregnant!” and then eat whatever I want. I’m hoping, since I’ll be pregnant for most of the summer, to work harder at eating well for my baby’s sake as well as for mine!

    I’ve been cutting out packaged foods and processed ingredients for a couple of years now, but lately i’ve been really interested in healthier sugars. I make most of the food we eat from scratch, but i’m still using white sugar. I have a feeling that’s the next thing to get a makeover in my kitchen.

  125. Eat more veggies! We do extremely well with fruits – in fact, we eat so much fruit that I have a hard time keeping enough of it in the house. We don’t do nearly as well with vegetables, though, so I want to incorporate more of them into our meals as well as have them for snacks.

  139. For health and nutrition reasons, we are going to more whole food and organic also. Coupons help, but there aren’t alot of coupons for organic and very few for produce. We are trying to shop sales and combine with coupons to help the budget. But, i will pay more for organic over junk.

  149. I would love a copy of this book! I’ve already begun incorporating the freezer cooking, so that has helped. With two teenage boys, though, and a limited budget (I’m still a SAHM – 16 years now), it’s hard to eat nothing but organic. I’d love to do that, but it’s just not possible. This summer I hope to get my boys to eat more fresh fruit and homemade smoothies instead of the sugary snacks and drinks. I love your site! It’s very helpful and encouraging.

    Oh, and by-the-way, I just gotta mention to someone who would really be proud… last month I was able to cut my grocery budget by $110… with TWO, RAVENOUS TEENAGE BOYS in the house. I worked hard at it. Freezer cooking, menu planning, and couponing WORK!!! (We’ll see if I can repeat it this month.)

    I have been having gall bladder flair ups for quite some time and finally decided enough was enough! So I began to eat smarter and MUCH healthier. Then I came across the “eat right for your blood type” diet…my husband jumped on the band wagon himself and my 3 children are along for the ride. Surprisingly, they are excited about a healthier lifestyle. Now if I just had a great book like this to pull it all together, I would be thrilled! Thanks for the chance!

  155. I’m also feeding a family of 8. My goal for the summer is to can/freeze/dry as much fresh produce as possible for next winter, both from our garden and the farmer’s market. At a minimum, I’d like to get a year worth of tomaoes put away. There’s nothing better than popping open a jar of tomatoes for a taste if summer in February!     We’re hoping to phase out store-bought meat this year – only buying from local meat producers. I’m also hoping to finally refine my blanching and freezing so that we don’t buy any frozen veggies from the store!

One thing that I would love to begin doing this summer is making our bread weekly.     Over, I’d say the last two years (maybe more), we’ve been trying to go more natural and more local, I’m cooking pretty much all our meals from scratch and I try my best to find ways to make my kids snacks from scratch as well so I don’t have to buy all those prepackaged, sugar loaded snacks from the store.   215. This year I am making a change with the meals I make for my family. I have tons of recipe books and my family and myself are tired of the same thing all the time. So what my husband and I are doing is every 2 weeks we pick out dinners from the books and write up our shopping list based on the recipes we have chosen. The recipes we like I write down for future meals. I do the freezer cooking twice a month when we get home from the grocery store and I do try to base the recipes we make on the sales in the stores along with the coupons I use to save money. I would love this book for some new ideas on saving money when it comes to our budget.

  230. I have four boys: 15, 12, 10 and 4yrs old. I also run a small in-home preschool. These facts alone would dictate that I need to learn how to feed healthy food as inexpensively as possible. Add to the equation that my 15yr old was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes Type I when he was 9yrs old and well, I need to learn all I can.

    The older they get, the more they grow and the more they eat. I have thought about not feeding them and then perhaps they’d stop growing but their father said that as tempting as that may be…I still need to feed them lol

    It is so easy and less expensive to keep processed foods in the home but with that convenience comes stress and guilt. We all want the best for our children but I seem to not be able to afford to eat the way we should all the time. I’m a child of the 70’s and grew up on natural and whole foods…I really want the same for my children and the children I care for.

    I’d love to have this book! It would be good for the kids’ physical health and an incredible boost to my mental health LOL

  316. We have started trying to eat healthier/more organic, but it is a challenge with the expense! Summertime does make it easier because produce is better/cheaper, and thanks to the internet I am finding fun and healthy and easy recipes. I would love to win this book!

  317. I do a lot of couponing and that leads to us eating quite a bit of processed foods. My husband and I would both like to figure out how we can change our diets without it costing us a lot more in the checkout lane!

  320. I saw this ebook on another blog and would love to get my hands on a copy! I’ve made a lot of progress, but we still have so far to go. My goal is for our diets to consist of 90% whole foods in their pure form (shopping at Sprouts has really helped me work towards this goal!). I’d aim for 100%, but who am I kidding? With our sweeth teeth, there’s no way that’s gonna happen. :-)

  322. Our family eats way to much processed foods. So this would be a good start. I think this year I want to hit the farmers markets more and freeze the fresh produce for winter.

  324. We’re trying to change our eating habits – more homemade, less processed. Our biggest problem now is that I can’t just “whip up” something and I haven’t started freezer cooking (altho I know I probably should). So I need to get better at planning ahead and preparing for the lazy or hectic days.

  340. My goal this summer is to try to shop our local farmers market for as much of our food as possible. My ultimate goal is to be able to preserve as much produce as I can for the rest of the year. But my main purpose is to try to knock out as many processed foods as possible.

  364. I continue this struggle. Go organice for double the price and make sacrifices elsewhere in the food budget or just buy the conventional strawberries on sale? It is an internal struggle every week at the grocery store.

  365. As a mom of 7 I try really hard to find healthy food that does not cost a fortune. Processed freezer food is so easy for me to pop in the oven or microwave and I really want to move away from that.I have type 2 diabetes and have been slowly changing how I cook and what I buy to eat.It runs rapid in my family and I really do not want my children to have to go thru daily what I do.
