To Be More Joyful: Count Your Blessings

June 6, 2010

Perspective makes all the difference in the world. The Eeyore outlook on the world tends to bring us down. But, when we realize how good we really have it, it’s easier to deal with hard things. Generally, they aren’t as hard as we think.

Consider how you can count your blessings this week.

Make a list of as many things as you can to be thankful for. Really. Write it down. Go ahead. I’ll wait. Go get a piece of paper. And start writing. Even the simple things, like sunshine and birds singing.

I’ve done this exercise during discouraging times, and it’s amazing what a difference it makes to my perspective.

The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song. — Psalm 28:7

I really needed to hear this – I mean really. I have some really tough things going on in my life right now that I’ve been so depressed and surrounded by negativity. I’m going to do this today. This is like some kind of message from someone greater than I. Thank you.

@Sharon,

Sharon, when I’m feeling down which seems to happen more these days than not I like to read a quote I have taped on my mirror:

In this world you may just be one person, but to one person you may just mean the world!

Good thoughts sent your way and hope tomorrow’s a better day!

This is such a great practice – I also try to find something to be thankful for even in difficult circumstances – afterall, we’re called to be thankful ‘in ALL circumstances’, right? :)

I wrote more about that here:

So many things to be thankful for. You’re right. It is a matter of perspective.

Loving this series!!!! I subscribe to 34…yes 34 what I like to call Mommy Blogs. This is my favorite non couponing/deals blog and Good Cheap Eats is my fav. recipe one! I save yours to read every day so I can enjoy it after the son is bed! I recently started a chart to eliminate some blogs as it’s really too much, but there’s no way yours will be cut. They are a MUST! thanks for sharing your life and great mind and heart with us!

Thanks so much for participating in this conversation about "a mom's life."

This is a place where moms can be themselves. Remember that each mother's path looks a little different. Please keep your comments respectful and kind. Reasonable minds will disagree in a nice way.

So let's talk about it, using "our big girl words."
