Christmas Breakfast, Gourmet Granola and a Giveaway!

July 30, 2010

Christmas Breakfast can be a rushed affair or an afterthought or a big elaborate event. When I was a kid, breakfast on Christmas morning consisted of a 2-lb box of See’s candy and the tangerines or oranges from our stockings. Fruit and chocolate? Worked for me.

Until I became a mom. Then I realized that new toys and chocolate made for overly hyper children too early in the morning. Before our eldest knew what the mad dash for presents was about, we made a full breakfast first, ate together, and then opened the presents.

However, as our family has grown in age and in size, somehow, impatience has entered the picture. No one wants to wait for breakfast before presents. C’mon!

So, I’ve tried to find a happy compromise. I fill their stockings with snacky breakfast and then after the hubbub settles down, I make a nice breakfast/brunch/lunch combination. This year it might include Chocolate Butterhorns, a Bacon Quiche, and maybe a fruit salad.

But, one of my favorite breakfasts is a Yogurt Parfait. Something about juicy berries layered between yogurt and granola makes it seem extra special. Plus, a yogurt granola bar could be a pretty fun and healthy alternative to ice cream sundaes for breakfast.

Today’s giveaway from Malachi’s Harvest would be a perfect complement to Christmas breakfast and a fun stocking stuffer for the foodies in the family.

A word from Malachi’s Harvest:

We strive to provide a granola we wholeheartedly believe is truly good for your health – containing raw seeds & nuts, lightly baked oats, naturally-occurring vitamins, enzymes, and minerals, coconut oil, and honey. We avoid preservatives, refined sugars, and processed grains.

Nutritious and delicious! That’s what I’m talking about! Yum!

This week one winner will receive a bag of granola from Malachi’s Harvest.

We serve bubblewreath for Christmas breakfast – homemade dough rolled in butter and cinnamon and sugar baked with pecans and a yummy glaze in the bottom of a bundt pan. It’s the only time of year we make it.

2 Kelley July 31, 2010 at 12:12 pm

@Mar H, The message you left was just a teaser! I get the jist of it but would you be willing to share the rest of this recipe sometime…may be on a recipe swap?? It sounds absolutely awesome.

3 Marilyn K July 30, 2010 at 12:05 pm

I haven’t established a Christmas morning breakfast tradition, but I should! It’s hard to think about Christmas right now…and because of your posts, I have started. I know I need to prepare gifts soon because Lord willing, we will have baby #3 in our home at the end of October!

4 Wendy Fields July 30, 2010 at 12:06 pm

We serve “Grown Up- French toast”, Orange glazed Croissants stuffed with cream cheese and prepared as French Toast! By brunchy-lunch time we are hungry again and we eat our traditional Christmas quiche– its Crab, Lobster & Asparagus. We don’t tell the kids whats in it because they like it because it looks like pie and calling it pie is working for now! The quiche can be made the day before and reheated as well as the Croissants, we buy them at the deli, we prep the orange glaze ahead– so its quick— the kids always run outside first to see if Santa’s reindeer ate the food they left out for them—- that gives me time to get it started in the kitchen before the frenzy begins!

5 Tracey July 30, 2010 at 12:08 pm

I usually serve something that can be put together the night before – a breakfast casserole, monkey bread or cinnamon rolls. (Now I’m getting hungry….)

Cinnamon buns (only day all year we get them) and fancy coffee. Enjoyed nice and slow, because we’re two grownups.

9 Kristen July 30, 2010 at 12:17 pm

At Christmas, we usually go to my mom’s house. She makes a simple pancake and bacon breakfast (because we know we’ll be having a huge lunch and lots of Christmas cookies later in the day) – it’s perfect!

10 Sarah July 30, 2010 at 12:20 pm

We have these this egg mixture with cheese and bacon toasted on an English Muffin…my mom named it Christmas Breakfast.

11 Wendy Fields July 30, 2010 at 12:21 pm

Crab and Asparagus Quiche– it can be made the night before. The kids eat French Toast– their Dad makes it– he is the master of French Toast. I think they like his cuz he is indulgent, meaning heavy handed with the syrup.

12 Susan July 30, 2010 at 12:21 pm

We like to have monkey bread. So yummy;)

13 laura July 30, 2010 at 12:22 pm

Cinnamon rolls & hot chocolate!

14 Jules July 30, 2010 at 12:28 pm

We have an egg casserole (with hashbrowns, cheese, & sausage) that I am able to prepare the night before and just put in the oven in the morning. We serve it with juice and/or Stephen’s Hot Chocolate.

15 kim July 30, 2010 at 12:29 pm

Every Christmas morning I have danishes that I have bought with juice, coffee while we open presents. While we open presents I have a egg casserole in the oven that takes about an hour to bake. I have made this the night before. It is always nice to have something hot and warm after the kids have eatten their Christmas stocking chocolate from Santa!!

16 Lauren July 30, 2010 at 12:33 pm

We haven’t established a Christmas breakfast yet – usually it’s just candy from the stockings! haha.

17 Jolie July 30, 2010 at 12:42 pm

Monkey rolls and sausage cheese breakfast casseroles are staples at our house on Christmas morning!

18 Sarah K. @ The Pajama Chef July 30, 2010 at 12:49 pm

we always have a easy cheese souffle [eggs] for breakfast on christmas, along with coffee cake (traditionally an apple one, but lately it’s been mixed up with other kinds), bacon or sausage, fruit, etc. christmas breakfast is my favorite!! :)

19 Amber July 30, 2010 at 12:49 pm

I usually do cinnamon rolls or pancakes with bacon. It is more like a brunch since we don’t get done with opening presents until midmorning.

20 Emily July 30, 2010 at 12:50 pm

My husband’s family always did waffles and strawberries, I’ve moved this to the night before. And my kids usually eat cold cereal. I like the idea of a brunch.

28 Anna July 30, 2010 at 1:00 pm

At our MOPS mtg, one of the mentor moms told us that they serve Pillsbury Cinnamon Orange Rolls. It’s easy and she can enjoy watching the kids open presents instead of being stuck in the kitchen. We’ve done the same since and it’s been great! We let the kids play with their new toys as much as they want before opening other toys so the whole process takes most of the day. This way, I get to spend some time with them before focusing on making the bigger Christmas dinner.

29 joanna July 30, 2010 at 1:01 pm

64 Lea Stormhammer July 30, 2010 at 3:03 pm

We serve a big breakfast brunch: bacon, eggs, pancakes, hashed brown potatoes, and fruit. Hubby’s allergic to cheese so casseroles, etc. are out. It’s a tradition in hubby’s family to do this (though they usually include some kind of cheesy potato dish) and since we don’t get to see them at Christmas anymore, it’s a nice way to stay connected even though we’re in different states.

Thanks for hosting this giveaway!

Thanks for the chance to win.

I always make a breakfast casserole. I put it on just before the boys get into the presents. They, are allowed to open two presents and then they have to stop to eat. This helps them to not rip into every present in a few minutes.

I love Christmas morning – we always have the same thing for breakfast – sausage egg bake, toast, fruit salad – made the night before and cooking as we open gifts – My mom always brings her home canned peaches – we are not allowed to touch the canning fruit till Christmas – she says it lets them settle – I think she is afraid we would eat them all before the holiday!

99 Sheri July 30, 2010 at 8:49 pm

I used to serve a more elaborate meal with homemade cinnamon rolls, cheesy hashbrown casserole, etc., but I don’t like how much that pulls me away from everything. So, this year i am going to do something much simpler!

100 Sue C. July 30, 2010 at 9:05 pm

We always have croissants and cocoa with candy canes in it. We’ve done it for 26 years or so, and all my kids look forward to it.

For right away, my grandma always made “pinch-me cake” (which is similar to what others call monkey bread). I still have to learn this, so one year I made cinnamon rolls from a can, but I’d like to make them from scratch instead. One year I cheated and made Monkey Bread from the freezer section. Then after presents we have french toast usually.

Christmas breakfast is one of my favorite traditions! In my family it was the one time a year when my Dad cooked and he made a feast! Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, cinnamon rolls, with coffee, milk & oj to round out the menu. Normally we opened presents first (after all the grandparents arrived) and the ate and played the rest of the morning. For my husband’s family breakfast came first with everyone at the table. They had crepes with fresh fruit, egg casserole, cinnamon rolls and fresh squeezed oj. Both traditions are equally yummy!

122 Shannon July 31, 2010 at 8:02 am

My husband is the breakfast cooker in our house. Usually we start with some cinnamon rolls and then have either eggs & bacon or waffles.

123 Trina July 31, 2010 at 8:48 am

We usually have Monkeybread for breakfast because I can get it ready the night before.

I love french toast on Christmas morning, but since I am in the minority on that one it doesn’t always work out. :)

125 Melissa Hartwell July 31, 2010 at 9:31 am

I still have fairly small children and so every Christmas I make French Toast with sausage and then make a yummy egg casserole for my hubby. I take the french toast and cut them in triangles and then arrange them to look like a pine tree. I then put the sausage links at the bottom to look like a trunk and then cover it all with powder sugar for the “snow” then I arrange an orange slice to be the “sun” on their plates. I’ve done this for about 7 years now and they love it :)

134 Heidi July 31, 2010 at 4:55 pm

We have Christmas brunch with my family. French Toast Casserole, Belgian waffles, sausage and bacon from the local meat market and scrambled eggs. No one wanted to give up breakfast once we all had kids so we just have it a little later. I’m sure we eat something before that, but it must be whatever we find just hold us over. The granola looks awesome! THere’s a little market in the Amish country of Ohio where I like to buy granola! Thinking about making my own this year to give as gifts.

We don’t have a traditional breakfast. I do try to play around with recipes so that we have something special to share during the morning before I cook Big Bird , Ham, or Lasagna and the accompanying sides(with my helpers).

I guess I’m a minority. My kids don’t get their stockings until Christmas evening. I found that what happened is my kids zipped through presents and stockings and ate all the candy and soda instead of savoring the Christmas celebration so I sloooooooowed it down. Each person takes one present from their pile and opens it (thanks the person politely who provided it if there)and then it rotates. Stockings are opened in the evening to preserve some of the excitement of the day(and provide dessert). The kids seem to be okay with it. I’m interested to see how it works out this year now that we have a third adult in our household(my oldest son turned 18) and he will get to strive to maintain a balance between family, friends and work ,particularly since less than 2 years hence we have another adult emerging(and then we have a lull for a couple of years while the other 2 grow).

I try to serve muffins on Christmas morning because they are quick to eat amongst the chaos.

We do a big breakfast with my husband’s family ever year at 7am. We have blueberry muffins, bacon, biscuits and gravy, fruit, scrambled eggs, pancakes, and whatever else we happen to be in the mood for when we do the planning. So yummy and such wonderful family time. :)

The kids usually dive into their candy from their stockings first thing, which isn’t much just enough to make them happy before breakfast. I usually make something fun like Santa pancakes. We eat breakfast before presents or we’d all be starving and cranky. It takes us forever to open presents, we all watch each other open presents, taking turns one gift at a time.

I have never had to serve breakfast myself. We have always been somewhere and I am being served. However, I think waffles would make a darn good Christmas breakfast.

We pretty much treat it the same as usual. Thanks for the giveaway!
