So far we’ve had five out of six children go through potty training. (Graduates shown above.) After some trial and error, we’ve found the toilet seat insert to be the most useful tool. Coupled with a stool to climb on, the toilet seat insert has proven to be the gear our kids needed to get on the pot and do their business independently.
Prior to receiving this travel toilet seat insert there were vacation moments when our little guy wouldn’t go without an insert. Yes, we’ve packed one in the suitcase for cross-country travel. And on another occasion, one desperate Nanna ran to Kmart in search of one.
Imagine my surprise when I saw this snazzy toilet seat with built-in insert at the grandparents’ house!
It’s a multi-tasking toilet seat. My in-laws installed them on all their toilets when the FishKids moved back to California. It’s a brilliant idea, especially for a family with young children or grandparents with frequent young visitors. The child size seat stores itself in the lid when not in use. Not only is the insert always available for whoever might need it, but it dramatically reduces bathroom clutter.

Ooh…I love this!! I’m right in the middle of potty training now and this would be such a help.
I really like the Baby Bjorn “Little Potty.” It’s small, simple and portable. My 19 month old can go and sit on it herself (when she feels like it…). I try to move it around the house and yard with us because it’s a good reminder and means less interruption to play (and more likely to potty). It’s all one piece with no nooks or crannies so it is easy to clean. We’ll be taking it on a road trip with us this summer.

We have that seat! Unfortunately, the almost four year old prefers to use the little potty (Baby Bjorn) so I’m stuck cleaning a bowl of poop every day. Yuck. We’ve told him four year olds don’t use little potties so they’re going away on his birthday. In 11 days. Woo-hoo!

I’m in the middle of potty training right now too. We saw this at a friend’s house about a year ago and decided it was worth the investment for us as well — love it!
That is so cool! I would have much rather had that than the insert sitting on the floor. If we have anymore kiddos I will be looking into getting one of those!
We got that insert for the downstairs half bath when #2 was potty training. We also have a collection of character inserts and BB little and big potties. All of the inserts are potentially messy but it really is a nice option.
Leave the tools alone…trust me, all of them! You just need a potty, a regular old potty…when you are in the middle of walmart/restaurant/part/friends house…you want them to be able to go with no issues of needing a “tool” or you are just training yourself to beat your head against the wall, be frustrated and clean up a LOT of messes way worse than changing a diaper…and WAIT until they are ready (ie: they request the potty, can pull down and up their own pants and get their hiney up on the potty)

hey, we have that potty seat!! So far so good, it certainly keeps little bottoms from falling in, easy to clean, easy to install.
I have 5 boys and I absolutely CANNOT live without my “potty shield”. After taking the toilet apart down to the floor several times to clean and get the smell out I finally bought this. Best $20 I ever spent.

So where did they find this little beauty? My 4 littles share a single bathroom. I will take any chance at reducing clutter! I’d love to hear a brand name, store name, etc.

Does anyone have a way to help little ones learn to stay dry through the night? My just-turned-three-year-old has only been dry in the morning 4 times in her life!
@Rachel, I think three may be young. But when I thought we were ready. We just went cold turkey on the pull-ups. I used waterproof crib pads in between several layers of sheets, so that if they woke in the night, I could pull off the wet sheet and wet crib pad and lo and behold! The bed was already made with more of the same underneath.
@Jessica Fisher, Thanks for your input! We recently switched to training pants with a cloth insert during the night and got rid of pull-ups. We’ll try going cold turkey when we start seeing more frequent nighttime dryness.
This is one of the coolest mom-tools I’ve ever seen! We bought the insert, but it slides around some on our toilet. I’ll definately be buying this, since we’re about to start training our little guy “for real”. Thanks for the tip!
We bought a similar one at Wal-Mart a few months ago for around $20. Works VERY well! My 2-year old uses it and doesn’t have any problems switching to a regular seat (with mama holding her so she doesn’t fall in =D ) elsewhere.
I need this! I don’t have room in either bathroom for a stand alone potty so this would be the perfect solution. Thanks for sharing!
FishMama, I’m glad you posted this. I had first seen it in England. But we had no children so the memory of it did not stick. After reading your post we immediately bought one on amazon. It’s awesome….no more smelly, broken Dora the Explorer seat that no grown-up in their right mind wanted to remove.
Eeww, yes, I can totally picture it. I’m tempted to get one for our house even though we’re renting. FishBaby is expressing an interest whether I’m ready or not.
