Simple Party Solutions: An Ultimate Summer Sandwich Party

August 3, 2010

The blogosphere is an amazing place. I have made some rich, rich friendships through blogs. One of the people I’ve met in my web-surfing is Joy of FiveJs. Joy did all the great design work on my two sites, but more importantly, she has become a great friend. We can talk theology, music, html, homeschooling, and Alton Brown all in the span of five minutes.

Joy and I have often remarked that we share the same brain. We think so similarly on so many topics, but can still stimulate one another with challenging ideas. I like to think she has the left side and I have the right side. Or is it the other way around?

I love it that God brought her into my life. So when she called me a few weeks ago and asked if she and her family could cruise by on their cross-country trip, I was so excited! Joy’s coming to my house?! Yeah!

One of the first things we did — besides talk a mile a minute — was take all our kids to the beach. What fun! And though she brought girls and I have boys the same age, the kids were able to ignore each other’s cooties and have a great time, as if they’d always known each other. Then we went home for a little dinner party.

Time for a party!

It’s been awhile since I had a party-party at our house, like with guests and everything. But, the timing was really great since Kraft Deli Deluxe had sent me all that I needed to throw one. And Joy provided the perfect occasion. But, I didn’t want to be so Martha about it that I didn’t just enjoy the short time we would have to visit.

My mission: Throw a fun party in the simplest way possible.

Here are some ways that I went about achieving that:

Simple Decor

Based on some items I already had as well as some new additions, I chose a bright color scheme of yellow and teal. It was festive yet not too crazy. They reminded me of sun and water, you know, California. And since we were going to be entertaining out-of-state guests, it seemed rather apropos.

We had folding tables and chairs  in the garage so I set those up early in the day. What a pain to chase down chairs for everyone when you don’t plan ahead. Not that I’ve ever had to do that or anything.

Teal tablecloths, white napkins, a few cute candles — we’re good to go. A few candles for once the sun goes down. Now what about food?

Simple Menu

Since I love to cook and eat, I can often go overboard. I dream up big exotic menus when really simple is usually better.

Solution? An Ultimate Sandwich Party

You know I love Sandwich Night for an easy weekend dinner, but I hadn’t considered how easy it would make a party. I prepared platters of cold cuts and cheeses, including three new varieties from Kraft Deli Deluxe: Bacon Cheddar, Jalapeno American, and Three Cheese Garlic. I also lined out wheat and sourdough breads as well as a range of condiments.

Letting our guests assemble their own sandwiches made the main dish a breeze! I was amazed at how the Kraft Bacon Cheddar sandwich tasted. It reminded me so much of my childhood – except not burnt. Using the Panini grill made things super easy and a little lower fat than your regular grilled cheese sandwich.

I also tried the Jalapeno American on a sandwich. It has a nice kick to it.

Other simple serving ideas:

  • I used sandwich baskets with waxed paper liners for a happy compromise between reusable and disposable serving ware. Clean up was a snap!
  • Side dishes were all finger foods: chips, veggie tray, and fruit tray. No need to answer the plastic fork v. real fork dilemma. No need for a fork at all!
  • A plastic box filled with ice and water bottles and juice boxes made for easy drinking. I didn’t want to worry about pitchers, cups or spills. This was much easier.

Simple Dessert

Now, you know me, I could have got all tricked out with an elaborate cake. But, I’m trying to teach myself that less is more. So, when I saw these sparkly yellow and teal sprinkles? Well, cupcakes, of course! What easier dessert? No need for utensils, plates, or someone to serve. Just grab a cupcake and go!

The FishKids and I had a great time decorating the cupcakes and using those festive sprinkles. I am pretty much in love with homemade buttercream and my piping bag. I think my family might ban me eventually. But, I’ll enjoy it while it lasts.

It was so fun to see Joy, meet her family, and otherwise have a fun night of eating and talking and laughing. Hosting a Sandwich Party was an excellent way to do it all, too.

10 Denise August 3, 2010 at 7:05 am

Great giveaway!

19 Karen August 3, 2010 at 7:16 am

I love roasted red pepper, basil, and cheese sandwiches. And Reubens. And egg salad. And chicken salad with craisins and toasted almonds.

But never PB&J for me. Love the components, hate them together as a sandwich.

Thanks for the giveaway!

22 Michelle August 3, 2010 at 7:18 am

My youngest son’s birthday is on Christmas Eve and he always chooses to have my “big sandwich” for supper- a loaf of ciabatta bread, italian dressing, sliced ham, turkey and roast beef, black and green olives, provolone and cheddar-all wrapped up tight and weighted down for a couple of hours in the fridge. Yum!

23 Connie August 3, 2010 at 7:19 am

An open-faced tuna melt – just tuna and cheese for the kids and some extras of avacado and tomatoes for the adults. It is an easy meal, made in the toaster oven. Thanks for the great giveaway! ~C

30 sarah w August 3, 2010 at 7:28 am

for true comfort food there’s nothing like a pb&j on home made wheat bread. the jelly should ideally be strawberry freezer jam.

31 gina August 3, 2010 at 7:28 am

Is that a tub of piping bags I see in the picture? If so, where do you get them? thanks!!

79 Fran Gottfried August 3, 2010 at 8:25 am

Hi and thanks for the great give away!
Our favorite sammie is My Italian sub sammie I make with Pilsbury french bread, the kind you have to bake in oven. I make the french bread according to directions on pkg and then cut it length wise. Add good ham, salami and provelone cheese.
bake at 350 for about 5 minute just to melt cheese. Take out of oven and add sliced of rip tomato and cucumber that has a little sprinkle of oregano. Soooo yummy!!

80 cheryl August 3, 2010 at 8:27 am

Roasted turkey, crispy bacon, creamy guacamole, romaine lettuce topped with some spicy mustard mixed into ranch dressing—YUM!
I don’t care what bread it’s on as long as it’s not soggy.
& for some reason I’m hungry again even though we just had lunch LOL

81 Jessica A. August 3, 2010 at 8:27 am

Good old kraft singles grilled cheese is still my favorite but my second favorite is roast beef, turkey, and munster or swiss cheese.

82 TopazTook August 3, 2010 at 8:27 am

I am definitely a BLT gal — bacon, lettuce and tomato. Light on the lettuce, heavier on the bacon and, especially in season, the tomato. I vary it up a bit — sometimes mustard, sometimes Miracle Whip (I prefer it to mayo). I think I’ve even replaced the lettuce with spinach leaves upon occasion. BLTs are, in fact, what we had for dinner last Saturday evening, with tomatoes from the garden, this year’s sweet corn (done in the microwave) and cucumbers in a creamy dressing.

83 Jacqueline H. August 3, 2010 at 8:28 am

I love a tomato sandwich with just a hint of light Miracle Whip!

We love our sandwiches with fresh mozzarella and tomatoes, basil and arugula from our garden drizzled with olive oil on sprouted bread. The arugula gives it a different zing and extra nutrition, the sprouted bread is very wholesome and you don’t have to worry about the kids consuming nitrates and msg-laden lunch meats.

Super Giveaway!
My favorite sandwhich of the moment is this
EGGPLANT PANINI
Ingredients
1 eggplant
Dashes of salt
1 loaf bread, sliced
1 large ripe heirloom tomato
1 zucchini, thinly sliced
1/4 cup mayo
2 Tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp olive oil
2 garlic cloves, crushed
Palm full of fresh rosemary
Salt/Pepper
4 slices of swiss cheese
Handful basil leaves
2-3 tsp olive oil, for sauteing
2-3 tsp olive oil, for brushing bread before grilling

1. Slice eggplant into 1/4 or smaller slices.
2. Lay them into a strainer and sprinkle both sides with a few dashes of salt. Place the strainer in the sink and let sit for 30 minutes. The salt will draw out the bitter juices and will give the eggplant a better flavor.
3. Meanwhile, slice bread into 1/4 inch slices.
4. Slice tomato into semi-thin slices.
5. Slice zucchini into semi-thin slices.
6. Prepare Rosemary-Garlic Aioli sauce. Whisk mayonaisse, lemon juice, olive oil, crushed garlic, chopped rosemary and salt and pepper, to taste.
7. After 30 minutes, the eggplant will have produced beads and become softer. Pat dry and place in skillet with 1-2 tsp olive oil. Saute for 3-4 minutes, then flip and saute the other sides for 2-3 minutes. Once they have browned a bit, they’ll be ready for the sandwiches. In the same skillet, add 1-2 more tsp olive oil and saute the slices of zucchini for 3-4 minutes, then flip and saute the other sides for 2-3 minutes.
8. On bread slices, add swiss cheese slice, basil leaves. And the aioli sauce to the other slice.
9. Add sliced tomato, sauteed zucchini and sauteed eggplant to the swiss and basil side.
10. Put sandwiches together. Grill on Panini Press

We are Gluten free so that being said sandwiches have turned into a luxury item, Gluten free bread is super expensive. But my boys and I love to make turkey, provolone cheese, italian seasoning, tomatos, and drizzled wth olive oil. I usually grill it and it is delicious.

307 Chelsia Rief August 4, 2010 at 10:12 am

My favorite sandwiches are the ones my husband makes me. But my all time fave is a pretty simple one. Smoked Turkey Breast on multigrain bread ( because I have a thing for the seeds) with melted cheddar cheese on top ( thank to my hubby using our toaster oven) with fresh green leaf lettuce and sliced tomatoes. I crave it a couple times a month and after my 2nd daughter was born our first day home from the hospital, it’s what my husband made me that afternoon for lunch. He made us lunch and served it to me in our bedroom and we ate in silence as we watched our newborn daughter sleep. Aww…the memories flooding back!!!

Thanks for the giveaway and for the memories that came with it :)

308 Melissa D. August 4, 2010 at 10:29 am

Well you gotta start with BACON!!! Yum so from there here it is”

Sourdough Bread, washed in a little garlic butter
Bacon
Gouda cheese (enough to act as the spread yet keeps things together)
grilled caramelized red onion
sliced tomato
thinly sliced zucchini or yellow squash (gotta keep getting the veggies in)

then throw it on the grill until the bread is toasty and cheese has melted.

If you need a little dipping sauce, whip up some guacamole on the side, I prefer without.

Yum. Dig in!!!!
