Choosing Better Over Good

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
– Luke 10: 38-42
Jesus doesn’t say that Martha was doing something bad. She was doing the housework, presumably cooking and cleaning. After all, she had a houseful! She was doing good work.
But, Mary, who should have been helping, wasn’t!
Jesus points out, however, that Mary was choosing something better, in this case, learning what God wanted for her.
It’s all too easy for me to get caught up in my to-do list and to feel driven by my circumstances. Oh there’s so much that needs to be done!
Early last week I realized that my circumstances were driving my actions and not God or my love for my husband or children. I was being bossed around by the urgent. Woe is me! It wasn’t a very comfortable place to be.
After some good prayer and journaling, followed up by a talk with a close friend, things were in better perspective. I was able to make decisions based on what I thought was most God-honoring and what loved my family most.
In many cases, it was letting good things give way to better things.
