I think we should change her name to Gimli. [6]

That was what FishBoy8 said last weekend while watching his sister enjoy dessert. And we all had to agree. Who needs fruit and pound cake when you’ve got chocolate fondue [7]?

It had been a long day. FishPapa and the girls and I had spent it shopping at IKEA. The boys spent it at home, reading and playing. Dinner had been served and cleaned up.

While FishPapa hammered together new furniture, I set to work in the kitchen. One small crockpot, some chocolate chips, a bit of fruit, and a Sara Lee pound cake [4] and we had the makings of a fun little treat.

Chocolate fondue [7], apple slices, clementines, and chunks of pound cake for dipping. Yummy!

Easy Dessert

Our family loves dessert. I try to incorporate fresh fruit whenever possible, but I confess. I have a major sweet tooth.

And while I make most of our baked goods from scratch, I have a lifelong fondness for Sara Lee pound cake [4]. It’s one of the desserts my mom often served us when we were kids, usually with berries and whipped cream. Nanna doesn’t like chocolate, otherwise, I’m sure this Chocolate Fondue [7] would have been part of the moment.

This dessert is one of the easiest on the planet to pull together. Slice fruit and poundcake and melt chocolate and evaporated milk in the crockpot. Serve each child a plate of dippers and a tiny bowl of melted chocolate. What could be better than that?

Having fun talks with your family!

Easy Conversation

Often we get so caught up in our to do lists, especially at the holidays, that we forget to just sit and enjoy one another. I’m all too guilty of serving up lunch or breakfast and then disappearing to take care of some task.

Sharing a fun dessert together can facilitate good conversation. Who wants to miss out on chocolate? While you munch, talk with your kids about their likes, dislikes, or even the origin of dessert! We’ve had many an historical conversation at the dinner table, discussing food anthropology.

Stuck for conversation topics? Try these on for size.

  • What’s your favorite thing to do in winter?
  • If you could go anywhere, where would you want to travel to?
  • What’s your favorite Christmas ornament? Why?
  • What do you want to learn how to do in the New Year?
  • Who’s your favorite movie character?

You’ll be surprised at the answers your kids conjure up. And how fun dessert can be!

The other night was memory-making for us as we laughed at FishChick’s antics — and her brother’s quick wit.

Try it, you’ll like it!

I was given some coupons from Sara Lee and I want to share them with you.
