What Scars Tell You

About twenty years ago I flew over the handlebars of my bike and face planted on the pavement. I banged up my knee, busted my chin open, and broke my jaw.

About two months ago, I flew over the handlebars of someone else’s bike [6] and face planted on the pavement. I banged up my knee and busted my chin open. Thank the Maker I did not break my jaw.

As the doctor was stitching my chin closed, I asked if he could see my old scar.

No, it looks like you split through the same spot.

Thinking About Scars

We all have scars — whether physical or emotional. At some point in life, we’ve been hurt — bad enough that it leaves a mark.

And sometimes we get a re-injury. We get hurt in the same way and the scar busts open. (The doctor said it doesn’t happen that way. But, I think he’s wrong.)

At least where hurt feelings are concerned.

Even though we may be beyond the situation,

  • Sometimes we get injured again.
  • Sometimes that scar tingles.
  • Sometimes we just hurt.

Today, my latest bout with the pavement has healed. And I’ve got the scar to prove it. It’s proof that I’ve been hurt.

But, more importantly, it’s proof that I’ve been healed. Healed.

It’s a demonstration of God’s goodness.

Sure, I can remember the pain and fear. In fact, the recent injury brought back a flood of emotions rooted in the first injury. But, more importantly, this healing is reminiscent of that first one as well.

God healed me.

God preserved me.

God has moved me on.

As scarred people, we can make a choice — dwell on the marks or focus on the Healer.

The LORD builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the exiles of Israel.
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.

– Psalm 147:2-4 [9]

Even if you’re in the midst of pain today, think back to another time when God Healed You. Have confidence that He will do it, again.
