Booking It – Join the Club!

This year we’re Booking It [5].

A group of us are agreeing to read good books this year and to share what we discover with each other.

If you’d like to join us, check out the details to this online book club [5] that features flexibility for those who want to do their own thing as well as “assigned reading” for those who prefer a little more structure. You can even do a little of both.

The choice is yours.

Today we’re going to share our reading plans.

On an office shelf, I have a growing stack/line of books that I want to read. I decided to put them all in one place, culling them from our book shelves where they’ve been hiding or buying them when the budget allows so that I can see them and not forget about them.

My plan is to spend 30 minutes a day reading for fun. I don’t have a system in place for when I’ll read which books (other than the “assigned reading” [5]), but rather, I’m going to go where my mood leads me.

My Plans for Reading

  • Clutter Rehab [8] by Laura Wittmann – You may know her as the Organizing Junkie [9]. She has put together a great little tool to getting your home and your life in order. (Yes, I’ve already whipped through the book. But, I’ll tell you about it next month.)
  • The Fiddler’s Gun [10] by A.S. Peterson – I’m a broken record when I say that our family loves Andrew Peterson [11]‘s music and stories. The Fiddler’s Gun [10] is by his brother, a fictional account of a young orphan girl at the time of the American Revolution. I’m eager to go on this trip.
  • Can Man Live Without God [12] by Ravi Zacharias – This book had a huge impact on my husband many years ago. While I’ve listened to many of Ravi [13]‘s apologetic messages I’ve never managed to make it through one of his books. (The man makes you think! He’s a regular “sharpie.”) I’m going to try tackling this book this year.
  • Mere Christianity [14] by CS Lewis – Again, another “sharpie,” CS Lewis has entertained me with his fiction and his allegories for years, but I’ve been too much of a reading wimp to make it through this classic book. This year may be the year.
  • Miserly Moms [15] by Jonni McCoy – This is a reread for me. I’m curious to see how the fourth and newest edition varies from the original that I picked up in the grocery store 14 years ago when I was pregnant with my first child.
  • The Chronological Bible in a Year, using this schedule [16] – Last summer I read through the Bible in 100 Days [17]. Yes, really. It was a wonderful journey, especially following along with others doing the B90 Day Challenge with Mom’s Toolbox [18].I think I will tackle that intensive reading schedule again some time, but for now, I’m going at a slower pace. I started reading the Bible chronologically a week or so ago and am taking my kids along for the ride.
  • Other books and novels that go along with teaching 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 8th grades – We are currently studying the 20th century, so there is a wealth of great books written during that time that we’ll be reading in the coming months.

Reminder – Your Assigned Reading

{Out pops my teacher hat – remember I used to teach high school English!}

If you are going to be doing the assigned reading with us this month, you’re going to want to get a hold of Gretchen Rubin [21]‘s The Happiness Project [22]. I first heard about during last year’s Booking It. (I’m sorry I can’t remember who shared it with us.) But, I didn’t get a copy until the end of the year.

It is a fabulous book about goals and resolutions and examining the things that make your life more fulfilling. It’s a great guide to thinking of what you really want in life.

It’s also an extremely popular book, a New York Times Bestseller, even. So, it may be hard to get a copy from your local library. If so, ask around amongst your friends to see if you can borrow it, pick up a copy from Amazon [22] (they are less than $12 currently) or try to win one today.

[23]Win a copy of The Happiness Project [22].

Gretchen very graciously sent me a review copy when I wrote to tell her we were going to be reading the book together this month. But, I also bought several copies for Christmas presents and kept one for myself. Soooo……….

I have an extra copy to give away.

Everyone who shares their reading plan today, whether through a link or comment, will be eligible to become the new owner of this book.

I’ll close the linky and the comments on Sunday, January 11 at 8 pm, PST and contact the randomly chosen participant via email. Please write me back within 48 hours to claim the book. This giveaway is now closed. Congrats to Sheena. [24]

Share Your Reading Plan

Hopefully, I left enough room for myself to add some of the great books I know you’re going to share in Booking It this year.

So link up your Reading Plan post or tell us what you plan to read in the comments below.
