Eat Breakfast Each Day

This week is all about getting good habits going.

We can enter the new year with such good intentions, but it’s sometimes hard to follow through with those goals. It’s good to sit back and think and plan what we can do to carry those intentions to fruition.

One good habit that is essential to your health and your “life as MOM” is to eat breakfast every day. You know the story, you’ve heard it since you were a kid….

Breakfast is the Most Important Meal of the Day

Not only does breakfast provide calories and energy for the day ahead, but it can also be a very tasty way to spend your morning.

Oftentimes, however, we think that we don’t have time to eat breakfast or our mornings are so scattered, we just don’t make eating a good meal a priority.

Yet, eating a morning meal is not just good for you — it’s good for your kids! So model good eating habits and start breaking that fast each day.

Here are some ways to make breakfast an easy part of your morning:

Make use of your freezer

You’d be surprised at how many breakfast foods do well in the freezer. Egg dishes, cinnamon rolls, and even smoothies can be prepared ahead of time and stashed in the freezer.

Just pull a few key items out the night before and allow them to thaw or rise in the refrigerator. They’ll be ready to bake or serve first thing in the morning.

Enjoy dairy and fresh fruit

Some of my favorite breakfasts consist of fresh fruit and either cottage cheese or yogurt. The dairy products provide the calcium and protein while the fruit adds a juicy sweetness — and makes it a little more fun.

Set it up the night before

Lay out bowls and spoons and boxed cereal or oatmeal before you go to bed at night. Mix up an egg dish to stash in the fridge. Assemble your smoothie ingredients in the blender bowl and slip in on the refrigerator shelf.

By setting things up before you go to bed, you’ve saved yourself some critical steps in the morning. And less work when you’re bleary eyed is more likely to lead to good eating.

Eat Oatmeal

Oatmeal is said to be a great source of fiber. Experience tells me it’s a great stick-to-your-ribs kind of breakfast. Provided that it’s not mushy, I love oatmeal, especially with cream, nuts, dried fruit, and a little brown sugar. Yum!

I often make instant oatmeal packets for my kids which they devour in short order. I prefer cook-on-the-stove oatmeal, so when I mix up a pot, I often let them shake on a few sprinkles in stead of sugar. They think the colored sprinkles are way cool and it helps them enjoy a good breakfast in a fun way.

He is a huge fan of these steel-cut oats, as is his son, and his grandsons.

This oatmeal is steel-cut rather than rolled and then toasted, giving it body and texture that you don’t see in regular oats. It cooks quickly, but it doesn’t get soggy. Definitely a winner in my book.

  2. We love steel cut oats! I soak a pot of oats overnight once a week and then reheat the oatmeal on other mornings. Our favorite topping is blueberries from our freezer that we picked in July.

  4. I love serving oatmeal and green smoothies for breakfast. My husband isn’t a huge oatmeal fan, so he prefers to have eggs with his smoothie.

  5. While being 9 months pregnant, my favorite way to serve breakfast is anything that’s easy! Honestly, it ends up being cereal for me and my husband and a Nutri-Grain bar or cereal for my 18 month old! These oats would be a great and healthy change for us!

  6. Fortunately, I haven’t struggled with getting the family eatig breakfast yet because we all love it. We usually do cereal but we sometimes will do oatmeal, pancakes made ahead and frozen, eggs,etc. My girls especially love English muffins!

  7. I try to have theme days for our breakfasts (I haven’t completely perfected it yet). One day for eggs, another for oatmeal/hot cereal, another for yogurt & granola, another for pancakes/waffles, etc. It mixes things up and we never get sick of anything! :)

  8. This year church goes from 11 until 2, so I’m making a big brunch every Sunday! It’s so fun to come up with different menus that (I hope) the kids will eat, and that are above and beyond the normal breakfast. Yesterday we had apple oven pancake and cheese muffins and grapefruit. Yum!

  9. My favorite way is to make steel cut oats for the workdays on Sundays and then put it in containers for each day. All you have to do is take a container with you or heat it up at home for a healthy, fast breakfast.

  10. We usually do something easy for breakfast – cereal, toast, yogurt, fruit – some combination of those. We’ve never tried steel cut oats, so it would be great to try something new.

    I LOVE steel cut oats and would love to give this kind a try. My 2 year old loves to eat them with me too. We like to cook up a huge batch in the oven (so easy) and then put 1/2 in the refrigerator and 1/2 in the freezer. I have oatmeal ready to go for at least 2 weeks. I make granola to stir in with applesauce. Yummy!

  17. I’ve been wanting to try overnight oatmeal in the crockpot. Steel cut oats would be perfect for that. Usually I cook the quick oats in the microwave. Yummy.

  18. Personally, I love a hot breakfast. I like to make up big batches of waffles, pancakes or french toast and freeze the leftovers so they can be a quick breakfast for those busy days. And I know what my kids are eating, unlike lots of packaged counterparts.

  22. I prepare breakfasts while I’m putting the finishing touches on the lunchboxes for school. However, there is often a queue at the toaster oven. I make my own instant oatmeal, so it is as easy as measuring out 1/2 cup mix and 1/2 cup water.

  23. I like to set out a buffet and let people eat what they want, when they’re up and dressed.

  25. Oatmeal with brown sugar and milk, with a side of wheat toast and juice. I am taking the sprinkle idea though cause my guys love sprinkles!!! Need to figure out how to work fruit in that will get eaten!!

  27. Breakfast usually consists of cereal here. Although I am trying to be more consistent with having other options. We love oatmeal with plenty of goodies in it (nuts, dried fruits, spices) but if you ask my kiddos, their favorite breakfast is probably Super Hero Scrambled Eggs. :-)

  28. I like to make breakfast a variety. We get bored having cold cereal every day so we try to break it up with different things like hot cereals (especially oatmeal), different fruits, yogurt, egg dishes, etc.

    I love Coaches Oats in my rice cooker! I leave it plugged in on “warm” over night and then add 1/2 – 1 C liquid in the morning and click to Cook until done. YUM!

  31. My favorite breakfasts are the ones that I can prepare the night before, so that all the work needed in the morning is to put something in the oven, on the stove, or in the microwave. And I’ve found quite a few recipes to comply with those wishes!:) Would love to try my overnight baked oatmeal recipe with steel cut oats!

    I love to get the prep work done for the upcoming week, over the weekend. It doesn’t take much time to make extra pancakes, waffles, french toast and then stick the extras in the freezer for everyone to enjoy during the week!

  34. My family likes breakfast “fresh,” but I still put as much as possible together the night before. For things like pancakes, I mix all the dry ingredients and have wet ingredients ready to stir in so that I don’t have to take the time to pull things out of the pantry in the morning.

  35. I make steel cut oats in my little crock pot….overnight. 1 cup oats, 3 cups water (fills my mini crock pot right up) then I set it on warm over night. In the morning, breakfast is ready to go. My little boys (2 & 4) love oatmeal with frozen blueberries from costco and a dash of cinnamon mixed in. The blueberried are sweet enough to need no sugar and they cool the oatmeal off for the kids.

  36. My husband eats oatmeal for breakfast everyday of the week. He mixes his up by adding honey one day and brown sugar the next and adding some dried cranberries or raisins too!! I fix it for me and the kids by adding some butter and cinnamon!

  38. Our standard breakfast is stove top oatmeal and fruit smoothies with a protein powder boost. We do baked oatmeal occasionally when we sense the kids are getting bored with the standard fare.

    We love our oats around here! So much more cost efficient and healthier than boxed cereal.

  39. I like oatmeal but I get almost everything ready the night before so I can throw it in my bag to go to work.

  40. Our family loves breakfast and I typically make preperations the night before if it’s a time intensive meal. For pancakes and waffles I get the dry ingredients mixed the night before so meal prep is faster the next morning.

  41. On Sunday’s I like to prepare a nice sit down breakfast for my family, but during the week our schedules are way too hectic for that. So instead I prepare things like scones, muffins and sausage and cheese biscuits ahead of time and freeze them. You can microwave them for a few seconds and they are nice and hot and ready to go. For my preschooler I also keep plenty of frozen waffles on hand. She LOVES waffles.

  42. My favorite way is to have my 9-year-old make the oatmeal :) It’s so much easier that way :) She measures it, outs it on the stove, cooks it, dishes it our with brown sugar–everything! We eat oatmeal about 3-4 days a week (I buy it in 25lb bags!) and it is really easy that way!

  43. We eat a variety of breakfasts. One of my favorites is oatmeal with brown sugar, fruit and nuts. I also love yogurt, granola, fruit and honey.

  44. I try to serve a hot breakfast to the kds every day before sending them off to school. Their favorites are my homemade pumpkin chocolate chips muffins and homemade waffles.

  45. Hands down, my family’s favorite is baked oatmeal. We could eat it every. single. day. But we don’t, since it’s not exactly low calorie!

    My children didn’t like oatmeal until last week (believe it or not). My little one ate some at preschool last week when learning about Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. Since then, she insists on eating it for breakfast. Now they all want it!

  47. We love steel cut oats. I make a huge batch every week since that is all my husband eats for breakfast. I cook mine with a little milk, a little butter, cranberries, almonds and brown sugar. It lasts in the fridge for up to 7 days and is delicious and healthy. To make it healthier, leave out butter and sweeten with pure maple syrup.

  55. My son (almost 2) loves muffins. I’ve spent the last year seeking out great home-made muffin recipes for him. he loves them all – banana, apple, pumpkin, etc. Hubby and I eat cereal, oatmeal, during the week. On the weekends – it’s fun things, like waffles or pancakes.

  65. I just revamped our breakfast’s so that we will not be eating as much boxed cereal but rather more home cooked meals. I’m a stay at home homeschool momma, so I have more time in the a.m. to fix a hot breakfast than if I was having to get my kids on the bus. That said, I do like to make egg casserole at the beg. of the week so that we can just cut a piece and warm it up when we’re ready to eat.
    I also like to do pancakes, chocolate chip! :)

  69. I have become a huge fan of freezer breakfasts. Baked Oatmeal, Muffins, Pancakes, Waffles, and this month I even have Ham & Egg McMuffins in the freezer. I love oatmeal (but, like you, not mush). But, I haven’t yet convinced my kids that it’s wonderful. So, we compromise with baked oatmeal.

    We like to put some raw oatmeal in our yogurt in the morning for breakfast! It is quick, easy, and most importantly tasty! Sometimes we have muffins too!

  76. It seems like we’re always in a hurry in the morning so our breakfasts are usually simple – cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, toast, etc. We save our big breakfasts for the weekend, especially for dinner on Sunday. I’d love to try the steel cut oats, I’ve been hearing a lot about them.

  82. Homemade Oatmeal Blueberry Muffins! These can be made ahead and frozen, and then the night before just pull out what you need for breakfast then pop them in the microwave for a yummy warm breakfast.

  83. Every weekend a make a big batch of pancakes for my daughter and muffins for my son. It always lasts 1 week, sometimes 2.

  87. I love breakfast! When I was pregnant with my first, I practically lived on cereal my last trimester- my midwives didn’t think much of this practice! My kids however can sometimes be a hard sell so I’ve learned to let them have foods for breakfast that aren’t necessarily considered breakfast food. I also keep the freezer stocked with foods they like- frozen multigrain waffles is a biggie!

    I make my own oatmeal packets a few months worth at a time and we serve oatmeal for breakfast every Monday morning.
    I also make large batches of waffles and pancakes to freeze and then we pop them in the toaster whenver the mood hits.

  89. Mmmm I love breakfast for all the reasons you mentioned! My favorite oats breakfast is probably homemade granola with lots of seeds and nuts, cinnamon and ginger. Add some milk or yogurt, and fruit and I’m a happy camper. I also really love having a loaf of bread ready using the timer function on my oven or bread machine. It’s delightful how the whole house smells of freshly baked bread, that certainly makes it easier to get out of bed!

My favorite way to serve breakfast is a pan of scrambled eggs with bunches of goodies in it!     I love oatmeal. I eat it every morning with brown sugar, bananas and raisins. I’ve not tried steel cut, but I do eat Old Fashioned. My kids love it too…they call it porridge thanks to the 3 bears. I even have to serve a bowl for mama bear, papa bear and baby bear.

  97. My go-to breakfast lately has been overnight oats. Mix oats with a container of yogurt (usually Greek style for the extra protein) and some almond milk. In the morning I add extras like blueberries, walnuts, bananas, dried fruit etc. Gets me out of the house a little quicker… I eat a fair amount of oatmeal but haven’t yet tried the steel cut version. I’d love to try it!

    My favorite way to serve breakfast is as breakfast-for-dinner.

  100. We love breakfast ’round here. I’m a big fan of a microwaved bowl of oatmeal with flax seed, maple syrup, cinnamon and raisins, served with a small glass of orange juice. For a special treat breakfast, such as when we were with family over the holidays, something that can be prepped the night before – like a pan of overnight apple french toast or overnight cinnamon rolls.

  114. We do a lot of cold cereal here, but I’m looking for new ideas. Saturday is the day for waffles or pancakes or other hot breakfasts and we have “breakfast for dinner” a few times a month when there’s more time to fuss with it.

    Although we are usually a cereal family, I love to make breads and rolls for the morning. and when the whole family is together we have a huge breakfast with eggs, pancakes, sausage, bacon, hashbrowns, etc. Its a family tradition

  119. Breakfast is our favorite meal of the day. We have several options: cereal and fruit, grits and fruit (or oatmeal), eggs and toast. Yum! Of course, we always have our glass of sunshine too.

  121. my boys like eggs so they have them a couple times a week…i prefer homemade granola-either cold or warm with milk or in greek yogurt.

    I love making muffins for my kiddos and hubby in the mornings. They are so yummy right out of the oven and they are great later in the day as a treat.

  123. We like cereal, oatmeal, toast and eggs during the week. Sometimes on weekends I’ll make pancakes or cinnamon rolls. I tried the frozen pancake/waffle thing over the summer, and my kids refused to eat them. They are not normally picky, so that was annoying. I ate good for a few months though! :) We also like fresh fruit–whatever is in season.

  124. Pretty much every morning, I fix myself a bowl of oatmeal with LOTS of cinnamon, walnuts, and craisins. YUM! I usually have some cranberry or blueberry muffins along with breakfast drop bisquits (egg, sausage & cheese) in the freezer for a grab -n- go breakfast for my boys.

  125. My favorite breakfast is homemade granola with vanilla yogurt. My husband is not a fan of granola and yogurt so his favorite is sausage, eggs, and biscuits.

  126. I have two things that help me tremendously when it comes to breakfast. I cook breakfast about 4 times a month, and we have a breakfast routine (Mon/non-sugar cereal, Tues/muffins, Thurs/pancakes, etc.). So, early in the month I make huge batches of pancakes, muffins, waffles, cinnamon rolls, etc., and freeze whatever we don’t eat for breakfast that day. Then later in the month, I just warm up the breakfast scheduled for that day. That way my family has a hot, homemade breakfast most days of the week. I grind my own flour, and I can control all of the other ingredients that go into my recipes. This makes me feel really good about what I am feeding my family for breakfast. :)

    Breakfast is important in our family every day, but I love cooking steel cut oatmeal in the crockpot overnight and serving it when we have friends or family at our house for breakfast. We set it up buffet style offering toppings like cream, fresh and dried fruit and nuts. It’s a great healthy option!

  131. I have a weekly schedule (that repeats every week) so I know what I need to get ready ahead of time and my kiddos know what to expect. I’ve been doing it this way for about 10 years.

    During weekdays, breakfast is usually fruit, cereal, oatmeal, and breads (toast, biscuits, english muffins). Weekend breakfast at home is like a diner, everyone gets their favorites, eggs, pancakes, grits, waffles, bacon, sausage, etc.. It’s a lot of work but well worth it!!

  136. 2 fav breakfast foods:

    1. oats with peanut butter, honey and dried cherries

    2. simple egg sandwich – toast brownberry wheat bread, cut in half and spread with veggie cream cheese, and then nuke a beated egg in the microwave for 1 minute.

  137. one of my favorite breakfasts is Fish Mama’s muffin recipe….we have it almost every week and polished off a batch today!

  138. We just started eating regular oatmeal and love it over the packets. We add diced apples or frozen berries from our garden. Yummy

  139. Breakfast. Is it bad to say whatever I can grab as I walk out the door in a hurry? Try to do cereal if there is time but toast is most days.

    I like to make a bowl of oatmeal for each kid and let them pile on the goodness – dried fruit, nuts, cinnamon, and I dole out a little bit of brown sugar. Yum!

  142. We do cereal through the week and on the weekends do a bigger breakfast on Saturday.

  143. I love to serve fruit and yogurt in a pretty ice cream soda dish with cinnamon toast on the side :).

  144. I make a pan of oatmeal on sunday night and divide it into the glass pampered chef prep bowls with the white lids. Then each day I grab one and take it to work with me so I can eat breakfast while I’m reading my emails from the night before :)

  147. I would love to win this outmeal. I cook breakfast morning every morning because my son does 28 hours of gymnastics a week and needs a hearty breakfast. We are not near a costco.

    My kids love for me to make blueberry pancakes! I usually use frozen blueberries and mix them in a big bowl of pancake mix and store leftover batter in the fridge for the next day….of course we have purple pancakes. I have never had the steel-cut oats and would love to try them I have a huge oatmeal fan ( reminds me of breakfasts with my dear granny). Have a great day!!!

  151. My husband makes wonderful breakfasts on the weekends, but the weekdays are faster meals. Our favorite is yogurt with Bob’s Red Mill Muesli and either a bit of jam or even a touch of Trader Joe’s Midnight Moo (chocolate syrup) across the top.

  152. My little ones have been on a kick of sliced apples with peanut butter. It’s fruit and protein, so I feel it’s a pretty healthy breakfast.

  153. In the mornings, it is just me and my 14 month old, so I usually make it with her trailing me and pulling on my pants. I’ve been trying to get her to eat oatmeal and sometimes she does but usually she just eats the bananas.

  159. Have you tried Peanut Butter Oatmeal from Lynn’s Kitchen Adventures? It can be made the night before. Just drop it in the oven in the morning and breakfast is doen. My 3 boys love her recipe.

    Any way that can be eaten on the run. We never get to sit down for breakfast.

  162. During the week we are mostly grab-n-go type items but on the weekends we like to do a big breakfast with eggs, bacon or sausage with french toast or pancakes.

  163. during the week, breakfast is usually eaten at work, so either a bowl of instant oatmeal or an egg (from the eggs in a box) and cheese sandwich. on the weekend

  172. Oatmeal & Cheerios (and coffee!) are breakfast staples in our house. On some days, though, we try to find fun ways to use leftovers for a special breakfast – leftover sandwich bread becomes French toast, leftover enchiladas become the basis for a twist on huevos rancheros, etc.

    We love breakfast at our house! We some times have it for dinner. Our favorite is green smoothies and/or breakfast cookies.
