Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
The days are just packed with mistakes, are they not? The extra push on the snooze button that makes us late for an appointment and harried on our way. The snarky comment about the lady who cuts us off in the intersection. The short word with our child who simply wants to help.
Those are my days. Filled with mistakes. Filled with things I wish I could undo. Filled with things that I wish I could do over. By nightfall, I can find myself more than ready to bid the day goodbye.
That’s why beginnings are so nice. The beginning of a year, of a month, of a week — each helps me feel like I’m getting a fresh start — and a chance to do something over.
And, God, in His infinite wisdom, has given us a fresh start each morning.
The day is new. And we’re given the opportunity to press on. Forgetting yesterday’s mistakes, forgetting the mistakes of five minutes ago, we can strain toward what is ahead.
Go, do it.
