What’s Your BAD Money Habit? Frugal Friday

This week is all about getting good habits going.

But sometimes we need to acknowledging bad habits in order to change and grow. When it comes to bad money habits….. whooeeee…. I’ve had more than a few over the years.

One that still holds over, though, is that I can sometimes get so focused on money issues: saving, spending, and clipping coupons, that I can forget that people are more important than things.

People are more important than things.

And an extrapolation of that is that relationships are more important than money. And sometimes that’s hard for us to see. Thankfully, I have a husband who reminds me when I’m getting too tight fisted. And, he’s said the hard things when I’ve gone overboard. Thankfully, I have a man who keeps me from turning into a regular old Scrooge.

Some things that are helping me break this habit?

  1. A bad habit is mindlessly using the credit card. Even though we have always been able to pay it off at the end of the month, I know we spend more because we use it. Thus, my post for today is “Our Cash Experiment”.

    I think I have the same “bad” habit as you! Reading what you wrote reminded me of how much I hated that my dad would only let me shop from the sale racks. Clearly, this apple didn’t fall far from the tree! And yet, just tonight, DS1 was complaining about something similar. I don’t think that means we have to pay full-price just to avoid conflict, but I wonder if there’s not room to “finesse” the relationship a bit more, too.

  3. Books are my vice. I am not content with borrowing them, I want to own them. As a homeschooler that means lots and lots of books that I think I “need” and justify because they are being passed down from child to child…

  4. McDonald’s Sweet Tea. It only costs a dollar, you know…so it can’t be a bad habit, right?

    Wrong.

    I can make tea (and my own sweet tea is really my favorite to drink since it is oh so tasty) for pennies. Literally. But I love McDonald’s sweet tea and it is extremely convenient.

    And while it is only a dollar, those dollars really add up over the month. I could have spent that money on something much more useful.

  6. diet coke. But I’ve promised myself I won’t break myself of this until I get past a significant project.

      I had a bad diet coke habit. I am pretty much broken from it now, except on really “hairy days with my kids”, I’ll yearn for one.

  7. I buy gifts year round for Christmas and birthdays when I find something great on sale. Sometimes, I realize I have bought more than I needed to, so I am working on a better tracking system!

    Bad money habit. Well I have a few, but the one that tops the list…Super Target. My Super Target is 4 minutes away from my home. I go there every payday to get our household/beauty items. I buy generic. My bill always goes over $100.00. I will buy some food items there (I find snacks are cheaper than my grocery store). Here is the funny thing, I budget for it whenever I go (like this morning I need to do a run.) I am estimating $125.00.

    I make routine stops there during the week, sometimes out of boredom, sometimes because we really do need something. Little trips add up. I don’t want little trips anymore.

    Second money habit is for my grocery store. I’ll go in to get 3 items, leave with 7-8 items. GRRRRR.

    I get so mad at myself. :(

    This year, I really want to focus on this year is mindful spending, becoming frugal.

    Any tips out there???

      If there is something you really want to buy but is not on your *list* put it on next weeks list and see if you still want to buy it on your next shopping trip:)

      I used to have a Target habit. $100 per week just because it was on sale. I shopped to give myself something to do during the day when I was home with my 1st baby.

      I stopped going to Target for awhile, then only shopped from my list. No extra trips to walk the aisles.

        Denise, that is a GREAT tip. A lot of times I find what I bought, I really didn’t need or want, it just looked good in the store.

          Wow! Thanks everyone! I did good today, $106 at Super Target, my list did not include sheets for my daughter’s bed, but was something that we needed to get (they finally had a full size in stock). I scored big with peanut butter, our favorite kind was on sale for $2.06, normally $3.99, I stocked up on 6 jars (that will be deducted from my grocery bill.) NEED vs. WANT is something I really need to focus on. :)

  10. Going out to eat on the weekends. I tend to do all the cooking and want to take a “night off” I need to be better about making lost of leftovers so I don’t have this problem!

  11. My worst money habit is FEELING GUILTY that I am not living up to EVERYTHING I read/discuss with others. I could always save more; I need a peace about how much is enough.

    (My DH is always urging me to spend more money to ease my workload/stress, and it’s not that he is a spendthrift.)

    Okay, so my answer resembles the kind in an interview: “My worst quality is that I work too hard.” :)

  13. I can relate so much to your bad habit. Sometimes I can get so caught up in the “game” of saving money and spending less that I don’t realize I am being stingy. Not so much with others outside my family but with my kids.

  14. My worst money habit is making excuses. My husband is a “by the book” type person. If we have “x” amount of dollars for groceries, he’ll put things back that he likes just to stay under. If I go by myself, I justify and pray that the scanning fairy will magically deduct an extra dollar or two and somehow I’ll make budget. Wow, I can’t believe I verbalized that. So, I need to stop making excuses.

  15. I am not patient enough! When I want something, I want it now. I don’t want to wait until I have a coupon or it goes on sale. I am getting much better about this since we have stopped using credit cards, but it is still hard :-).

  16. My bad money habit is expensive coffee!

    My solution: brew at home! Of course, sometimes it’s easier said than done. Working to fix it though!

  17. My bad habit is spending more than I need to everytime I go to the store. My solution for this is 3 months of zero shopping! I stocked up on what we NEED and I’m not going anywhere to buy anything! :)

  18. When we were first married, I was so tight with the grocery budget that I never bought my husband any snacks, which he loves. He was very sweet about it but now I’m happy to say that I’ve loosened up a bit and he eats better now. :)

  19. My bad money habit is eating out (esp. fast food) but I have made it a goal of mine for this year to plan a menu on Sunday for the week ahead to avoid this & so far so good. :) Hoping I can keep it up.
    I’ve also gotten kind of sloppy with sticking to my food budget over the holidays so I’m getting back on track with that too.

  20. My worst money habit is eating out too much. Even though I plan meals each week and mostly stick to it, we still end up eating out at least once a week.

  21. My bad money habit is buying things that are can’t miss deals, even if they are not needed. When something is so cheap, it is hard to pass it up.

  22. My Bad Money Habit is eating out too much alone. I need to plan my mornings better so I’m not rushed getting kids off to school. I don’t leave myself enough time to eat breakfast and then grab something in the drive-through on my way to work.

    I need to either 1)get up earlier or 2) find something easy and quick to make for my breakfasts.

    Any tips for easy to eat, quick breakfasts?

  23. ehhh….I suppose mine is just spending any additonal money that comes in on stupid stuff, you know, a new rug for the kitchen, a new pair of shoes, and such … that’s why I linked up today with “Like Found Money” … the social security reduction hold back on payroll was like WOW on my check and my first thought was, oh, what can I spend it on??
