Why Goals are Important

A month ago, we talked about goal setting and taking a long view of the year and the things that we hope to accomplish.

You might not think that goals are important. You might be fine with how you spend your days — and you’re not really in a hurry to get anywhere.

And that is totally fine. I’m not saying you need to go anywhere or do anything — except articulate some goals.

You have to have a goal

If you have goals, even just one or two, for who you want to be as a woman, a wife, a mom, a friend, then it will be easier for you not to feel tempted to compare yourself with the Girl Next Door.

If you have a written goal, you will know where YOU are going, and not feel like you have to do what she’s doing.

If you have a goal in mind and are moving toward it, even if it is the goal of doing less, you will be more content with your days and not wonder if you should be doing something else.

Knowing that your goals are not someone else’s should free you to be you — and not try to be her.

You should have a goal.

  1. I LOVE goals!
    Last year – 2010 – is the first time in my life that I was brave enough to get serious about New Year’s resolutions – only I laid them out as goals :-) I re-evaluated them in June and at the end of the year… and set out new ones for this year. Only this year I am working daily on making a little bit of headway in each of the different areas. Areas of challenge and change for me are: health & fitness, financial (debt and spending reduction – charity and savings increase), home & hearth (declutter / organize in general AND specific project of photos), and personal fun (crafting, cards & reading)

    Anyway – I totally agree with you about the goals. Goals keep my days from drifting away from me…. goals keep me focused on how important a tidy house is… goals remind me that sending a birthday card is also important… and most important, goals help me feel like I am achieving something tangible.. and if I feel fulfilled, it’s MAGIC to my family :-)

  2. I am focusing on ONE thing – losing these last 6 pounds! I’ve lost 30 since April – now just these last 6 pounds stand between me and my goal… Then I’ll have to get a new goal. :-)

  3. My current goal is to finish a 5K run in May of this year. I don’t care how long it takes me, I just want to cross that finish line. :)

  4. My goal is to actively shop my book around! I just edited a book for a friend of mine, and part of me is like, “Argh! She’s getting this done before me!” I have to keep reminding myself that we’re going about it differently, we write about different things, we have different voices, and our writing comes from a different place. In no way am I in competition with her!

    But still…

  5. My goal is to get my son potty trained…and he’s doing great!

    Oh, you meant for me? My goal is to read two books a month, and so far I’m doing great, too!

  6. I did not feel the need to write down/think about any goals….we have an 11-day old baby.

    But lately I’ve been thinking of one: to look at my husband when he is speaking and keep looking until he is done. (no sneers allowed.)

  7. Piles Piles Piles– my goal is to reduce/cut/minimize or get rid of some piles. Mainly papers to grade but there are some others around. Worked on them yesterday but today hasn’t been so productive.

  8. This years goals – One – to have enough home organizing clients by year end that I am happy and having fun yet not overwhelmed. Two, run a 5K this year. I turn 40 in August, have never been a runner, yet want to prove I can do it.
    Three, relax & have fun. After a few tough years, this year I want all of us to let go some & live that life we always talk about wanting.

      I had never run in my life, & took it up Feb.’ 10. I ran 2 5ks, (the first one I was so nervous I almost passed out on the ride over!) You CAN do it! Several times throughout my race, I told myself that I could do it.

        Thank you for the encouragement. How long did you train before you ran your first 5K?

          I ran my first 5k in October, it was the first race that was close to where I live. I liked having the extra time to “work on” my running. I struggled for the first few months, as I ran more it got easier. :)

  9. One goal i’ve been working on is teaching myself how to sew, and working on creating meaningful gifts for friends & family! This was a big goal for me this year, and so far, so good!! :)

  10. My number 1 goal right now is to learn all the ins and outs of my new (and first ever outside-the-home) job. I want to be the best employee I can do and I want my customers to walk away feeling like they got the best service possible. I didn’t succeed in that today, but it remains a goal to work towards! :-)

    I love goals! Besides running a 10k this year (I did 2 5ks last year), the biggest goal I have set for myself is to be a more joyful mom. I came across the series you wrote & could really identify with it. No one wants a crabby Mom, wife etc.

    Along with that I want/ need to be more present in my kid’s lives. My son is 4.5 & my daughter is 2.5, they are growing up way too fast. I want to sit down & play endless rounds of Memory, I always find though that *something needs* to be done around the house.

    This will definitely be a challenge for me, it’s ok, I’m
    up for it! ;)

  13. @Jenna, keep looking and asking for financial assistance! You might be surprised what’s available. Some colleges even have discounts to seniors and in this economy there are a lot of aid programs from the state. Don’t lose hope!
