Create a Family Playlist (12 Days of Christmas Family Fun)

Christmas carols are a hallmark of the Christmas season. There are some songs, like Nat King Cole’s The Christmas Song or Bing Crosby’s Silver Bells, that take me back to a certain time and place in my childhood.

They are special and evoke happy feelings that I really can’t explain.

My siblings and I used to drive along in the car, singing carols together. And I was the geeky little girl swooning over Bing Crosby. Little did I know he was old enough to be my grampa!

I hope that by playing special Christmas music for my kids, we are creating those musical memories for them as well. My favorite album, Andrew Peterson’s Behold the Lamb of God, is actually one that we played in the hospital room when my daughter was born. Yes, really. Last year I put together a playlist of some of our favorite Christmas songs to burn to a CD for the looooooooong ride to Mammoth Lakes. And at some beautiful moment, there might even have been eight voices singing along!

This year, I splurged on a few CDs to add to the collection. I’m looking forward to working with the kids to put together a playlist of their favorites for us to listen to in the car as well as at home. And maybe, eight voices will sing along.

Create a family playlist

If you have an account, you can store your current collection as well as purchase music on iTunes. It’s really not difficult to put together a playlist. You can rip your CDs to your library and then mix and match songs until you have something you like. And at a buck a song through either Amazon or iTunes, you can put together a custom list for pretty cheap without even owning an existing collection of CDs. And honestly, some of the complete albums are not that expensive. (I like having a hard copy.)

Here are some of albums you might like:

  1. Oh I love Andrew Petersons Christmas CD. We have seen it in person twice and it is just amazing from every angle. We have been listening to it over the past few days making ornaments for the tree. The Labor Of Love (I think that is what it is called) makes me cry everytime… no matter how many times I hear it.

Believe it or not, that was the CD playing in the delivery room when one of my girls was born and “Labor of Love” started playing at the very end!

  2. I started making holiday mixes for the car a couple years ago – Dean Martin is a classic favorite. Newer music we like includes She & Him, Barenaked Ladies holiday CD and Michael Buble.

  3. Amy Grant’s, Home for Christmas, mostly because of the song: “Breath of Heaven” (Mary’s Song) it’s all about what it must have been like for Mary to give birth to the baby Jesus. It takes my breath away every time.

  4. Now my favorite is probably the Carpenter’s christmas cd. Growing up my parents had this cassette tape called “all star country christmas” and I loved it so much. I think I even wore it out. It had old school country singers like Buck Owens. Just hearing those songs reminds me of childhood christmas’s.

  5. I love this idea. I remember my parents had a cassette when I was growing up that was a compilation of all their favorite Christmas songs. It had some classics and some comedy and some children’s music. Every time I hear a song that was on that cassette it brings back great memories of childhood Christmases. I hadn’t thought to do the same for my children. Thank you for the idea!

  6. Right now I’m listening to “Glory in the Highest” by Chris Tomlin. I also love “Peace on Earth,” Casting Crowns’ Christmas album, and “Christmas from the Realms of Glory” by Bebo Norman.

We LOVE Jars of Clay’s Christmas Songs CD! It has been at the top of our playlist for years now! It’s just beautifully done… Also, Christmas in Havana Cuba is a fun one for family Christmas parties. :)
