Get Your Engines Revving with Cars (A Rainy Day Survival Kit)

As the mom of four boys, I’ve
seen stepped on my fair share of toy cars. And I’ve seen that look of utter joy when one of my boys sits behind the wheel of a car. It’s a beautiful thing.
Now, that’s not to say girls can’t enjoy cars. I’m sure my girls do. But, they’re still pretty little. Honestly, though? This guy was two and could not be parted from the race car. I don’t think my girls have been that obsessed about anything that wasn’t pink or purple.
Needless to say, boy or girl, my kids love a good story, craft, or movie. They love to role play and to jump right into the action. And everyone wants the best car to win.
One of the things that can wreak havoc on “life as mom” is a rain or snow day with nothing for the kids to do. And those days are approaching! See that yellow flag waving on the side of the track? It means slow down and proceed with caution.
Plan for the next day when your kids can’t play outside by putting together a few rainy day survival kits. I’ve got a few ideas up my sleeve and I’ll be sharing them with you over the next couple months.
What’s in a Rainy Day Survival Kit?
- book and film recommendations
- links to coloring pages
- craft ideas and/or supplies lists
- recipes for cooking with kids
You can either gather what you need ahead of time or simply bookmark or pin this post to save it for a day when you really need it: when the kids are home sick, when school is canceled due to inclement weather, when something prevents them from getting outside and having fun, or whenever someone whines, “There’s nothing to do, Mom!”
Hint: These ideas also work great for your next car-themed birthday party.
Here are some ideas to enjoy your next “boring” day at home with your little ones. Even big kids will probably get sucked into some of the baking, storytelling, and movie watching involved.
Cars 2 was recently released on Blu Ray and DVD. We saw it in the theatres several months ago, but love it even more to watch at home, thanks to a review copy we received recently. There are so many clever touches that you don’t notice the first time around. I would say that I like the sequel as much or more than the first one. Disney/Pixar has done a fabulous job once again.
Some car-related viewing:

And if you get out on the road, be sure to print out these car games .
Choose a couch or chair to be the pretend car and role play with your child. Let him be in the driver seat and go along with the story.
You can also:
Bake up this fun Cars 2 cake.
Or for something a little more savory, use toothpicks and vegetables to construct edible cars, using a whole cucumber for the body, sliced carrots for wheels, sliced daikon radish for headlights. Play and eat together.
Whether you cuddle up together with a good book or warm yourselves with a cup of cocoa and asphalt cake, the next rainy day need not be boring. It can be a wonderful opportunity to spend time with your peeps and make some sweet memories.
