Organizing Your Car, Your Purse, & Other Personal Space

We’re on Zone Defense this year, tackling disorganization. In our game plan against clutter in our personal space, we face the car, the purse, and other personal space.
As we’ve explored this month, your personal space and how well it’s maintained makes a big impact on how you feel about you, your life as mom, and your daily life.
If getting dressed and ready in the morning is a stressful hassle, then the rest of your day is effected. Having a clean and orderly closet is the first step in helping you. A clean and tidy bathroom follows up second. If you can’t find your bed when it’s time to sleep or if your first and last waking moments are ones buried in clutter, your sleep won’t be restful. Taking control of your bedroom empowers you and can help you sleep easier.
And of course, if you aren’t taking care of YOU and your body , well, you could find yourself in a big ole’ mess.
To round out that little package of personal space, we’re going to tackle your car, your purse or other personal space, perhaps a locker at the gym or a drawer at work.
While each of these areas is quite different than the others, there are some commonalities. Chances are you use your car and purse everyday. So, the shape they are in has an impact on your actions through out the day. And there are a number of questions to ask yourself no matter the space that you’re tackling.
Whether you’re dejunking your car or your carry-all, consider this approach.
Take everything out. Shake out the dust from your purse. Vacuum out the empty car. Wipe down the locker or the drawer at work.
It’s always good to have a couple bags handy for this: recycling and trash come to mind. Also a “put away” container if applicable. If you have minions nearby to help you with the car, so much the better.
Ask yourself these questions:
If you’ve got stuff that doesn’t belong in your trunk or your handbag, put it where it goes. Do not pass go, do not collect $200 — until it’s found its new home. The “put away” bag or box is only a temporary holding station.
Only the things that you truly need and use in this location get to go back. Try to arrange them in ways that are orderly and compact. Containers, drawer dividers, and pouches are your friends.
Now that your stuff’s together in an organized way, the carpool or the grocery shopping trip should be easier to pull off with grace and style. Hopefully, you found some loose change or a gift card — and hopefully, not a bill — and go reward yourself for a job well done!
Check in on Wednesday for a progress report. I’ll have a link-up ready so that you can link up your own Zone Defense post if you like.
In the meantime, do you have any tricks for keeping your car, purse, or other personal space neat and tidy?
