Life at Light Speed

It feels like life is moving at light speed these days. I wake up ahead of the sun and before I know it, it’s lunch time. Bedtime comes seemingly before I can stretch and look about me. And, truth be told, most days I can’t tell you what I’ve done.

It’s an odd feeling, that.

Days used to drag on forever. Days of waiting to turn a certain age. Days of waiting for a baby to come. Days of lots of little ones afoot and it was all I could do not to scream when they all cried at one time. You have to laugh in those moments. You have to.

Time runs slowly when things are hard or when something you want is out of reach.

I guess then, it’s good that time seems to be slipping away?

In the busy-ness of life, it’s difficult not to get caught up in my to-do list when I feel like I’m racing to catch up. It’s all too easy to get distracted or to feel that I should do this or read that, call this person or write to that one. Or to feel the pressure of being “on my game.”

But, really? I don’t think God calls us to those things. I love this verse:

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.Ecclesiastes 3:11-12 [5] (emphasis mine)

Certainly this life is complex. But, I love how our purpose is scintillated down to this pair of actions: to be happy and to do good while they live.

God doesn’t say, “Get it together.” He doesn’t say, “Do it all.” He doesn’t chide us when we’re a day late and a dollar short.

But He has made everything beautiful in its time. And He desires that we enjoy this life and do good. I think that means He’ll give us what we need. And even though life seems to be rushing by at warp speed, there’s still beauty. There’s still life to enjoy. There’s still good to do.

Even if you’re not on your game.
