6 Great Recipes to Make with Berries (Ultimate Recipe Swap)

Spring and summer are ideal times to enjoy fresh berries. Check out this round-up of great berry recipes.

It’s been years since I took the kids berry picking, but it was a highlight of our spring back when we lived in Paso Robles. Then, it was olallieberries that we were after, specialty berries that grow well on the Central Coast. Yum! There was a you-pick farm not too far from our house where we would spend early morning hours plucking ripe berries off the bushes.

Like Little Sal, sometimes more berries made it into my kids’ mouths than into their pails. But, I made sure we took plenty home to can into jam. Oh! Olallieberry Jam is definitely one of my favorites. I’m contemplating whether or not we can make a trip north before the season ends.

You might not have olallieberries flourishing in your neck of the woods, but chances are good that some kind of berries are. Spring and summer are good times to harvest strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries. So, it’s in your best interests to have some recipes in reserve so that you’re ready for the onslaught of sweet, delicious berries. The following recipes can be used with interchangeable berries, depending on what grows well near you.

And don’t forget that you can freeze your berries to use throughout the year.

  2. That mixed berry looks awesome. I’m the only berry pie lover in my family so I’m wondering if I could make mini pies and freeze them? Has anyone ever tried that and how did it work out?

      I haven’t done it because many small ones means more detail work. (I’m lazy.) But, yes, you can freeze it. But, freeze it unbaked — and then don’t thaw it before you bake and serve.

    Perfect timing for more berry recipes. My husband just took our boys yangmei picking on Sunday. These are known as a Chinese waxberry otherplaces:

    These taste like a cross between cranberries and raspberries. They are really good, but can be a little tricky to use because they have a big pit in the middle.

  4. I just bought a bunch of raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries, so this recipe swap is perfectly timed for me!

    Incidentally, I used some of the raspberries to try out a raspberry jam recipe in this month’s Martha Stewart Living, and it was both easy and perfect.

    This is actually the name of this recipe, I’m not just trying to hype it up.:)

    To Die for Blueberry Muffins

    1 1/2 cups flour
    3/4 cup white sugar
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    2 teaspoons baking powder
    1/3 cup oil
    1 egg
    1/3 cup milk
    1 cup fresh blueberries
    1/2 cup white sugar
    1/3 cup flour
    1/4 cup butter, cubed
    1 1/2 teaspoons ground
    cinnamon

    1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Grease muffin cups or line with muffin liners.
    2. Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, 3/4 cup sugar, salt and baking powder. Place oil into a 1 cup measuring cup; add the egg and enough milk to fill the cup. Mix this with flour mixture. Fold in blueberries. Fill muffin cups right to the top, and sprinkle with crumb topping mixture.
    3. To Make Crumb Topping: Mix together 1/2 cup sugar, 1/3 cup flour, 1/4
    cup butter, and 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon. Mix with fork, and sprinkle
    over muffins before baking.
    4. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, or until done.
