A Few of My Favorite Things

This random collection is near and dear to my heart. It’s a very random collection, but they are things I don’t want to part with.

:: The red plastic Goody pick that I’ve had since the days of my big hair. I don’t think they make them like this anymore. And when my kids walk off with it, I’m bereft during primping time. It’s the only comb I like to use.

:: An old, beat up, framed wedding picture. This is one of hubby’s favorite pics of me on our Big Day. The frame boasts teething marks from one or more kids. It was a beautiful day.

:: The keychain that I wore round my wrist in college. At UC Santa Barbara we rode bikes everywhere, to class, to work, to the dorms. So, it was nice to have your keys on your wrist. What can I say, it was 1990.

:: My well-worn, almost threadbare sweatshirt from UCSB. My sister and my mom gave it to me for my graduation. I’ve worn it for almost 20 years and through six pregnancies. It’s a little stained, and you can almost see through it, but I’m looking forward to cooler weather, so I can wear it around the house, snug and cozy.

What are some of your favorite things?

  1. My big flannel PJ pants that I promise you I never leave the house in, but on Sunday afternoons after church in the winter you will find me snuggled up wearing them and reading a good book.

  2. I still have my old Goody pick too! It’s the only comb I use and I too, go bezerk when the kids walk off with it. I have a blanket that a college friend crocheted me that is getting worn, but it’s my favorite to snuggle with when cooler weather hits. I also have a few notes and pictures with my college roommate that I treasure since she passed away soon after college.

  3. I, too, have a 20-year old college sweatshirt that I adore. My husband and mother both wonder why I still hang on to it. It is my cold-weather staple and has seen me through 2 pregnancies. I have washed it to death and finally cut off the cuffs and neck and waistbands, as they were pretty scraggly. It’s new design doesn’t keep me as warm, but it is a nice nod to Flashdance. Vive the college sweatshirt!

  4. TwoDiffSocks says:

    Hi Ya’ll,

you can STILL find the hair picks in GVS & Rite Aid, ya just got a look. I bout 2 – a black & Red one a few years ago.

    Hope This Helps!

  5. I just had to smile over the photo of your hair pick, because I too, have had my white pick since the late 80s or early 90s. I HAVE to have it to fluff out this wavy hair of mine. Hairbrushes just don’t do the job, and I would be lost without it! One of my favorite things is a mirror that hung in my grandmother’s home ever since I can remember. It wasn’t an expensive one, but that oval mirror with gold trim was always in her living room and was the last stop of primping before any woman left the house or before the door was opened to greet a visitor. It brings back warm memories to have the mirror in my home now and to think of her each time I pass it by.

  6. Haha, lots of hair picks still hanging around; sounds like there’s still a market for them!
Sweet post. I like how everyone has their random collection of never-let-go-ables.
    Mine includes:
A French Bible wrapped in a leather West African cover (a gift from my Niger days), A small wooden box my (then future) husband gave me. Not sure what else, but those two are definitely in there.

  7. Hi Jess! Long time, no “see!” Congrats on the new book. :) I too have a pick from the good ole days (mine is black) pretty sure my mom got it for my perm in ’85. I have a special place in my heart for the gauchos too…. hugs to you!

Thanks so much for participating in this conversation about "a mom's life."

This is a place where moms can be themselves. Remember that each mother's path looks a little different. Please keep your comments respectful and kind. Reasonable minds will disagree in a nice way.

So let's talk about it, using "our big girl words."
