7 Ways to Save Money on Meat (Frugal Friday)

One of the most significant ways that our family saved money and fought back debt was to go meatless many nights a week. Reader Lisa shares other tips on how to save on meat.

You probably know that meat is the most expensive part of any meal.  And you probably also know that serving a meatless dinner one night each week is a great way to save money on your grocery bill.  But what about the other six nights?  Is it possible to serve meat and still eat on the cheap?  If you follow through with the tips below, it’s most definitely possible!

1.  Plan your meals around meat that’s on sale or marked down.  If chicken is on sale, don’t put “beef roast” on your menu (unless you have a beef roast in the freezer that was bought on sale last week!)  In addition, most grocery stores mark down meat that is coming close to its “sell by” date.  Check with the butcher to see if there’s a specific day (or time of day) that the meat gets marked down.  Clearanced meat isn’t meat that’s gone bad.  It’s just meat that has to be used (or frozen) soon…before it gets bad.

2.  Buy cheaper cuts of meat.  Cheaper cut = tougher meat, right?  Not if you utilize your crockpot!  A day spent in the crockpot on low can transform those cheap, tough cuts of meat into fork-tender bites of deliciousness!

3.  Separate the tenderloin.  Boneless pork chops, pork loin, and chicken breasts come with a small piece of meat hanging off the side.  The tenderloin is attached with some fat to the main piece of meat.  Use a kitchen scissors to trim off the tenderloin.  (You won’t even miss such a little bit of meat from your grilled chicken breast!)  Trim off all visible fat, place the tenderloin(s) in a freezer bag, and throw it in the freezer (don’t forget to label it!).  Add to the bag each time you prep your meat, and eventually you’ll collect enough to create Chicken Primavera or something else that calls for small pieces of chicken breast or pork.

4.  Use less meat.  If your favorite beef burritos call for 1.5 pounds of ground beef, use 1 pound instead.  When that half pound of “missing” meat is spread out among 6 burritos, you probably won’t even notice it’s missing.  If you do notice, and the burritos seem scrawny…

5.  Replace some of the meat in your recipe with beans.  This doesn’t work for just anything, but you can add extra beans to your chili,  hide mashed black beans in burgers, or mix some refried beans into your taco meat.

6.  Stretch your meat by using it as an add-in instead of a stand-alone meal item.  Instead of serving grilled steak, rice, and vegetables, make Beef Fried Rice, which uses only 1 pound of steak and makes enough to feed an army!  As well, soup generally yields a large batch while using minimal meat.

7.  Be intentional with your leftover meat.  If you have one serving of roast beef left after dinner, don’t eat it for lunch the next day!  Use it to make Vegetable Beef Soup, which will serve an entire family for supper (plus create MORE leftovers) instead of serving just one person for lunch.

With a little forethought and creativity, you can enjoy meat for supper without breaking the bank!

  1. Some good tips – but you left out some big one:
    1. Buy meat directly from a farmer in bulk. We purchase 1/8-1/4 side of beef from a farmer near us. And we sell pigs raised on pasture by the half pig. This way you can get hormone-free, pasture-fed meat at a discounted price. Good beef can cost as little as $4.99/pound and pork as little as $3.99/pound (hanging weight). This evens out when you consider along with the stew meat and ground meat you get some beautiful cuts. To locate farmers near you, contact your local extension service.

    2. Raise your own. We raise most of our meat and if you have some yard space and some time, it’s not such a tough proposition. Up and down our road, there’s at least 6 families that raise a pig or two each year.

    3. Learn to use meat that most people throw away. We’ve gotten oxtails, venison neck and pig’s feet for free from our neighbor who raises meat for sale. These pieces of meat are delicious, cook well in stews and have lots of meat on them.

    • I second the buying in bulk. We save so much money. However, we also get good deals just buying directly from the farm. On Tuesday, we bought

      5 whole chickens
      5 beef arm roasts
      8 pork shoulder roasts
      8 steaks (various)
      bacon, pork cutlets, pork steaks, etc

      Basically enough meat to last my family through March for $170. All of the meat was organic/free range. It took me two years to find my source and it’s about 90 minutes away from my house but it saves so much money.

    • We buy our meat from the farmer too – that way we can get organic/ free range meat for a reasonable price. As long as we have several nights of vegetarian fare (which is good for us too), we can easily stretch our meat purchase to last the entire year!

  2. Mushrooms can be a great meat substitute or at least a meat stretcher in one dish suppers. They have a texture that is close to meat and absorb the flavors of sauces well. I find if I chop mushrooms rather than slice them that my child who is less enthusiastic about eating them doesn’t notice their presence quite as much. Mushrooms are a great source of Vitamin D, too.

  3. I add cooked brown lintels to any dish I make containing meat, saving money by stretching my meat .With ground meats, the lintels blend right in and soak up the flavor of what they are in.My youngest refuses to eat beans or peas but unknown to him has been doing so for about 2 years.

  5. We do stir fry and buy the cheaper meats….after the fat is cooked away it’s actually more cost efficient to buy something with a higher fat percentage! And if you cook it right, the stuff that’s bad for you is gone anyways.

  6. What great ideas! I’ve been substituting beans for things, and using less meat in dishes that have multiple ingredients, but I’d not heard of using the leftovers for another entire meal. Fantastic! Thanks for all this information.
