Enjoy a Cuppa Tea

So far this month, I’ve shared 25 ways to stop and smell the roses. If you’ve been reading along, you’ll have caught the theme I’m working under: enjoy my health, enjoy my family, slow down, and make the most of all the good in my life.

I’ve mentioned already several good habits that I’m working to cultivate that are improving my quality of life from a health standpoint:

About a week ago, I was emailing with a friend, troubleshooting some health issues that she’d been having and I remembered this post of Stephanie’s. While I haven’t done a lot of reading on adrenal fatigue, Stephanie’s suggestions for treating it sound like good cures for a lot that ails us. I can’t vouch for the supplements that she mentions, but getting sleep, relaxing more, and eating better are things that we can all benefit from.

I sent the post to my friend, and then set to applying some new strategies to my own life, namely drinking a cup of herbal tea before bed. At first I drank the chamomile and peppermint teas that I already had, but then I found this Yogi Bedtime Tea at Walmart. Oh my!

It tastes great and it’s almost like I’ve found a magic sleeping potion. I drink one cup about an hour before bedtime, and I sleep really soundly! I am no doctor, nor do I play one on TV. I only share anecdotal evidence: this works for me!

Sleeping better makes me happier in the morning and more alert with my kids throughout the day. I’m also nicer to be around which is a good thing, too.

Drinking a cup of relaxing tea is a great way to stop and smell the roses.

  1. Oooh… I need to go to Wal-Mart this afternoon. I love hot tea, and I would love something that would beat down the after dinner cravings and help me sleep soundly. The quote you are featuring, “The days are long but the years are short,” has a prominent place on my refrigerator. Such a good reminder.

  2. I love the stop as smell the roses series! Just a note-this tea sounds really yummy, but I can’t try it because it is not recommended during pregnancy/nursing. Watch out mommies-just because it is natural or herbal doesn’t mean it can’t do harm. Be sure to read labels to stay safe during pregnancy!

      Very good point. It does have a warning if you’re pregnant or nursing. I’m neither, after thirteen years of both.

    • I was going to say the same thing! :) But it does sound delicious. Another Yogi tea I really enjoy is the Chai Rooibos, especially in the autumn. It only has cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, clove, and stevia, so some similar flavors to the Bedtime version. And I *think* those are safe for pregnant/nursing mamas. Double check to make double sure, though.

  3. Great advice – tea is notorious for calming us down! It’s also a great way to connect – I shared that last week on my blog. I’ll give this tea a try next time I see it in the store.

  4. I’ve noticed that I sleep better after a cup of tea at bedtime too. I currently have Sleepytime by Celestial Seasonings in the pantry. Delicious and BAM, I’m out when my head hits the pillow!

  5. Yep, adrenal fatigue is a real problem. I think many of us try too hard to do too much and get too stressed about it.

    Enjoying life, taking a break, sleeping a lot, etc make a huge difference. And it’s a whole lot better to prevent serious adrenal fatigue than to get it, believe you me! You keep on encouraging us to smell those roses!

  6. Ever since the effects of surgical menopause last year I’ve relied on one of the Chamomile Teas. I enjoy honey lemon in the early evening to start the chillin’ process. Then if I detect that it will be a long night its SleepyTime Extra to the rescue (the Valerian root in this one is what gives it it’s kick). It’s either that, prescriptions, or 2-4 hours sleep at night for one who never had sleep problems before the surgery. I’ll check out the Yogi brand too.

  7. Sleepytime tea works for me. I especially use it when traveling and dealing with jet lag. This past time, it only took a few days before I was sleeping through the night. I will have to check out the Yogi tea next time!

  8. I love, love, love Yogi Bedtime tea. It’s been my ritual at night for a couple of years now. I love the flavor and I love how it relaxes me and makes me ready to drop off. I’ve tried other night time teas and they’re either too strong or too sweet. I tried Tazo Rest and liked the flavor but had really crazy dreams after drinking it.
