Holiday Movie Round-Up

Posted By Jessica Fisher On November 20, 2012 @ 8:25 pm In Family Fun | 13 Comments

The four day weekend begs for at least one family movie viewing, doesn’t it? Here’s a handful of my kids’ recent faves.

muppets christmas carol

While we don’t have any regular Thanksgiving traditions [3] — besides eating — we typically start thinking and planning and crafting for upcoming Christmas celebrations over the long Thanksgiving weekend. That usually includes busting out our Jesse Tree ornaments [4] and some Christmas-themed films.

Here are five favorite films that my kids enjoy watching:

The Muppet Christmas Carol [5]

My younger kids loved the recent Muppets [6] movie, so they were thrilled when we received a review copy of The Muppet Christmas Carol [5], now available in a 20th anniversary edition Blu-Ray. I’m partial to the Jim Carey version, but Kermit and Miss Piggy hold their hearts.

The tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and how he learns to give is one that all of us need be reminded of from time to time. I know I do.

Elf

Elf [7] is another favorite, starring the often inappropriate-but-he’s-okay-in-this-movie, Will Ferrell. He stars as Buddy, a human boy, raised by elves, who doesn’t know his true identity until he’s fully grown. Much more fully grown than the itty bitty elves he towers over. Hilarity follows him as he reclaims his parentage and reenters the real world.

This movie is a hoot! We are always kept laughing. Cute and sweet, it is a family favorite already. And there’s a very cute tshirt at Old Navy [8] that I’ve got my eye on.

Home Alone

Let’s face it, the men outnumber the women in our home 5 to 3, so it’s only natural that Home Alone [9] ranks as a must-see for my kids.  The slapstick comedy and one-liners in this film are classic. The fact that is has stood the test of time from my childhood to theirs is a testimony to that.

Warning: Preview it for language and mild violence. It’s not for all kids or all families. But, the ideas and messages stand above the laughs.

A Charlie Brown Christmas

What is a holiday movie viewing without A Charlie Brown Christmas [10]?! In case you don’t know the story, Charlie Brown is appointed director of the Christmas play, but quickly becomes overwhelmed by all the bruhaha attached to the commercialized and fake celebrations of the holiday. He digs deeper for the true meaning of Christmas.

Who doesn’t like this classic story? It’s long-standing appeal is a testimony to Charles Schulz’s genius in getting to the bottom line. Linus’ monologue rocks.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

I think that Dr Seuss and Charles Schulz might have been soul mates. The classic animated version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas [11] never grows old. The newer, live action version,  How the Grinch Stole Christmas [12], starring Jim Carey, is super slow and boring at the beginning, but once you get past a certain point, it’s a fun ride. Weird, to say the least, but an interesting take on the old classic.

Either way, the story holds valuable lessons for all of us.
