Out The Door In Five (or 5 Ways to be Pulled Together in 5 Minutes)

Running late is an occupational hazard as a mom. Invariably, something will come up. Life as MOM contributor, Rena shows us a few quick ways to get out the door with a little style.

Out the door

We all have days when we’re rushing out the door and have no time to prepare an outfit. Here are five easy tips to make you look awake, pulled together and out the door in only five minutes.

number one

1. Pearl Earrings

Pearl earrings are classic and beautiful. They have the ability to make any outfit just a bit dressier. The white shiny sheen of this gem also brightens your face and coordinates with any color.

number two

2. Ponytail

Pulling your hair back in a sleek ponytail is easy and makes it look like you made an effort, even though it only takes a sec. If you don’t have long hair, consider pulling your hair in a half ponytail or bobby pinning the sides of your hair off of your face.

number three

3. Statement Necklace

A statement necklace is easily thrown on and draws attention upwards to your face. This effect can also be done with a bright, colorful scarf.

number four

4. Mascara and Blush

I love makeup, but don’t always have time to apply much. In fact, I usually end up doing it in my car. The two things I never go without though are mascara and blush. These two “magic” tools brighten your face, make your eyes bigger and your skin appear to be fresh and dewy (even if you only got a few hours of sleep).

number five

5. Maxi Dress

Your comfortable fallback while running out the door might be jeans, but I urge you to try a maxi dress. A long maxi dress covers problems areas and is as comfortable as wearing pajamas. Plus it’s incredibly versatile. It can be covered with a t-shirt, cardigan or dressed up with a fitted blazer.

Use just one of these tricks or all five and you’ll be dressy and ready for the day, whatever the occasion!

What trick do YOU use to put yourself together in a flash?

  1. I always feel together if my clothes aren’t dirty, my kid isn’t dirty, and I am wearing my favorite pair of sunshades. A smile always makes everything look better, too :)

  2. Hi Rena! Love your post and ideas.. I agree, accessories go a long way in pepping up an outfit.. My “not-so-secret” tip is to get my entire outfit together the night before, right down to socks and shoes.. That way, in the morning, I waste zero time in getting dressed!

  3. I love the idea of covering a maxi dress with a tee! Never even thought of it! :)

  4. I love the maxi dress/skirt idea! I wear casual skirts all spring and summer long for every outing but mine are shorter, I’ll be looking for a maxi version! Great tips!

  5. Never thought to try a maxi dress. Being short, I’m always afraid it might drag the ground, lol. I agree with the earrings, though I usually choose between my pearls or small silver twisted hoops. And for makeup, I don’t use blush at all since I tend to be pink-cheeked naturally. Instead, I go for tinted moisturizer and eyeliner on days when I only have a minute to get ready. It’s fun to see what others do, though.

    • I’m short too tend to stay away from long dresses – they only make me feel shorter! I’ll pair my jeans with a “nicer” shirt and silver hoops too. Completely agree with the necklace – always makes me feel nicer when I’m wearing one!

      • Jessica Fisher says:

I’m short, too. And Rena is tall. But we went shopping together and I saw a maxi at Old Navy that could really work for us shorter people. I think it depends on how it’s cut.

  6. I agree with the earrings, but instead of pearls, I wear my diamond studs all the time. They go with everything!

    • I totally rock the fake pearls all the time, unless I want to wear some dangly type with a specific outfit. If I had real diamond studs I would definitely go that way though!

  7. These are great tips. I like the idea of a maxi dress as my go-to is definitely jeans.

  8. Honestly, I love your approach, but as I’m chubby and 5’2″, I do a lot of Capris/Jeans. So mine is more this:
    Capris/Jeans, t-shirt (if cool, a cardigan)
Pearls, diamond studs, or small diamond hoops
    Ponytail
Make-Up is Laura Geller Powdered foundation, blush, liner, mascara and colored lip gloss
Spritz on some scent or another if I think about it…

    and I’m out the door.
    Love your style girl!
I may try a maxi dress. I just feel uber frumpy in them.

  9. My outfits of choice almost always involve skinny jeans and either boots or flats. For me, mascara and foundation are my makeup musts. I hate the way my hair looks in ponytails, though I continue to try and pull off that look. They always seem to look better on everyone else. And perfume almost always, it just makes me feel good. :)

  10. So funny! I’ve always avoided maxi dresses because I thought I was too tall! True some are ankle skimmers, but still cute!
