Get Out: Visit a National Forest or Park

Visit a National Park for fresh air, beautiful surroundings, and the great outdoors.

Devil's Postpile 375

The National Parks system is designated land, set aside by the US Government, for its preservation and enjoyment by the people. It’s also a great resource for enjoying the great outdoors with your kids.

Our family has visited Cabrillo National Monument, driven through Joshua Tree National Park, and hiked through Devil’s Postpile National Monument. Each occasion has been a great outing with the kids rife with fresh air and adventure.

At Devil’s Postpile the rangers were particularly passionate about their park, explaining to my ten-year old about the different flora and fauna within the area. There are programs at most of these sites where your kids can participate in a Junior Ranger program which is loads of fun.

This week (April 20 to 28) is National Park Week which means that admission is free! What better time to explore than when it costs you nothing to visit?

  1. Kathy in Illinois says:

Oh, Jessica, we love National parks and have been to many- Cabrillo National Monument, Yosemete National Park, Mount Ranier National Park, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore, Shenendoah National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Smokey Mountains National Park, Cumberland Gap, Gettysburg and probably more I can’t think of now. They are great places to take kids and be out in nature!
    God bless, Kathy in Illinois

  2. We are driving all over the southeast right now on a 3 month road trip. So many of the national parks/forests have been awesome and I’ve been surprised how many have been free (all the time). Right now we are driving along the Natchez Trace National Parkway, and it’s SO beautiful. In the last 2 months we’ve been to Everglades NP, Missions of San Antonio NP, Natchez HNP. In 2 days we will be in Mammoth Caves NP. And then plan on going to the Congree NP, smokey mountains, an more.

Thanks so much for participating in this conversation about "a mom's life."

This is a place where moms can be themselves. Remember that each mother's path looks a little different. Please keep your comments respectful and kind. Reasonable minds will disagree in a nice way.

So let's talk about it, using "our big girl words."
