Using up the food in your fridge, freezer, or pantry is a great way to save money. Join the Pantry Challenge!

We’re all looking for ways to save money, aren’t we? This month is one of those challenging months for me. Pantry Challenging, that is. Each January and July I put in a little extra effort toward using what we have in the food storage (pantry, fridge, freezer) instead of buying new. It takes effort, for sure, and lots of self-control. Lots.

I love the grocery store. I don’t buy clothes. I don’t buy shoes. But, I love to buy foodstuff.

Tough as it is to exercise self-control in the food realm, it’s usually totally worth it. In the past I’ve saved up to $400, half of our monthly food budget, by using up what I’d already bought!

You are welcome to join in the challenge over at Good Cheap Eats. I’ll be posting daily updates starting on Sunday. That’s basically reality TV of my kitchen table.

You can participate by doing a challenge of your own, posting questions on my daily updates if you need help, and offering advice in the comments section if you’ve got a savvy solution.

  1. I am joining the Pantry Challenge for two reasons. The first reason is to save a bit of money this month. Second, and more importantly, I will be participating in a multi-month experiment addressing the question: Can a family eat a healthy, well-balanced diet eating only what can be purchased with the monthly food stamp allotment? Two families, mine and the family of another researcher will be doing this. Both families have a husband, wife and three children in the household. We live in different states and different types of neighborhoods. I wanted to start with a nearly empty pantry, refrigerator and freezer to ensure a realistic challenge. So with the exception of fresh produce and some dairy we will be eating from our current stock of food for the entire month of July. I started the ball rolling today by making a loaf of banana, blueberry bread and using your recipe, made a batch of cranberry-orange granola.

  2. My husband is going on a business trip in August or September and my son and I will be tagging along. With short notice to save money we are going to try to save money on our grocery budget and save that money to put towards the trip!

  3. I’m joining this challenge! We have taken a 60% paycut by switching careers from the military to law enforcement, so we have absolutely no wiggle room in our budget. Our food budget has been cut by more than half, so a pantry challenge is desperately needed to make the most of what we have and keep from spending money!! Thank you for your encouragement through your blog!
