There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 [6]

As a new school year begins, we moms would do well to remember that there is a time and a place for everything. There may be some family practices, hobbies, and ways of doing things that need to be reworked or reprioritized as we get into new routines, new classes, new seasons of growth in our children’s lives.

This past week I became profoundly aware what a busy time the school year is for me. Not sure how I forgot that over summer vacation. I must have blocked it out.

How will I do it all?

I probably won’t. School is near the top of my list of priorities. And yet, laundry and dishes are still there. The pantry is quickly depleted and needs replenishing. Bills need to be paid, and the cars need to be washed. I won’t be able to do everything that I want to do, or even the things that I think I need to do.

Even though most of us aren’t “in school,” the return to school routine for our children has a definite impact on how we spend our days. And not every day will go according to plan.

We each will encounter challenges this year that we hadn’t anticipated. A certain subject may be particularly difficult for one of our children. There may be conflicts with teachers or friends or us. Illness may knock on our door more often than normal.

The school year is a fresh page in a book right now, but it will be full of scribbles, rumples, and erasures over the coming months.

No surprise for Him.

But, God is not surprised by any of these things. And He has a plan.

Commit to the LORD whatever you do,
and your plans will succeed.

Proverbs 16:3 [7]

I want to be flexible to God’s plan this year. Not insistent on my own. Open to what He has to teach me — and my children.

I trust that as I commit my “plans” to Him, they will succeed — or He will give me new plans, His plans, instead.
