Confidence Comes from Knowing

A few months ago, I started going to the gym. I felt like such a nerd walking into the gym that first time. All the machines looked foreign. Everyone else looked like they knew what they were doing. I hadn’t a clue. I felt like I must have “Greenhorn” written across my forehead. And I felt like a phony wearing “exercise clothing”.

Now, eight weeks later, I almost strut into the gym each morning. I know how to scan my ID card. I’ve got my gear: water bottle, headphones, ipad. I know how to wipe the machines down with disinfectant. I’ve even watched all the videos on how to use the machines. Oh yeah, baby. I’m a nerd of a different kind now. A gym nerd, if ever there was one.

But, I have confidence. I don’t feel like a faker when I don my exercise clothes and lace up my cross trainers. I know what I’m doing!

And so I have confidence.

Confidence comes from knowing. The same thing happens with Jesus. If you know Him, if you know what He can do, you have confidence in Him. One follows the other.

The hard thing in that equation is that sometimes hard things have to happen to you for you to know what He can do. There’s sweat, pain, and a degree of feeling like a dork or a loser or something not all together confident and put together.

You don’t have to go looking for the hard things, they’ll come. In the meantime, pray, read, study His word, sing praises to Jesus. Get to know Him so that you can have more confidence in Him.

But, once you know Him, you can strut. You don’t feel like a phony because you know your value was bought on the Cross.

‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
and to take him at his word;
just to rest upon his promise,
and to know, “Thus saith the Lord.”

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him!
How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust him more!

– Louisa M. R. Stead

May your week be filled with knowing Him — and trusting Him — more.
