Top Five Wardrobe Essentials

Most of us don’t have unlimited clothing budgets or closet space. Instead we need to make what we have make a big impact. Today Life as MOM contributor Rena shows us some fashion clothing and accessories that are must-haves for busy women. 5 Top Wardrobe Essentials - Life as Mom I’m a big believer in making things work as smoothly and effectively as possible. So naturally this translates to my wardrobe. I think clothes should work double duty and also be incredibly versatile. Here are the top five adaptable items to have in your closet that will make it nearly effortless to put an outfit together.

1. Pearl Earrings

Pearl studs are my go to when I’m running out the door. They are delicate and ladylike and will dress up even an old t-shirt. IMG_5380 - Version 2

2. Brown Boots

A comfortable pair of boots can be worn for a good part of the year. Wear them at the spring or the end of summer, as it cools down, with a pretty dress and cardigan and then as the temperature drops even farther, pair them with some tights or skinny jeans. DSC_1931 - Version 2

3. Skinny Jeans

If you find a pair that fits and makes you feel really good, you might want to buy two pair. This item is the work horse in my closet. Roll up the hem for a more casual, relaxed look and pair with sandals or keep straight down and dress them up with some pointy heels. Remember, you can also make your own skinny jeans from a pair of baggier pants. DSC_2066 - Version 2

4. Solid Colored Flats

Black, grey or white flats are obviously the most versatile, but if you’re feeling daring, go ahead and add some color to your outfit with a blue or red pair. I have a pair of gold metallic that I feel like go with everything and are nearly as comfortable as a pair of slippers, so it’s perfect for days when I’m feeling lazy or tired and don’t want to try, but also don’t want to look frumpy. 5. Jean Jacket

Jean jackets go with any color, texture, fabric or pattern, making them the most versatile outer wear to own. Pair your jacket with a flowy dress, cut off shorts or colored skinny jeans. skinny jeans.

  1. Cardigans are great too for when a denim jacket is too warm. I have white and cream one that work with almost anything (and cover some flaws of some shirts…ha :) ). And I’m totally agreed on the pearl stud earrings–super easy. Silver or gold hoops are also classic and match with everything.

  2. in the cooler weather one of my favorite go-to items is the best trench coat a budget can stand. i found mine at target years ago for $22. it’s a classic style and allows me to dress up the mom-uniform in a snap or take me out and about. i change it up by the season with a scarf, and goes with flats or boots or heels.

  3. How funny!! I was reading through the list and have almost nothing of the 5 essentials. I do wear a jean jacket fairly often, but none of the rest of the stuff. I did purchase some brown boots at the end of the winter season last year, but they’re not the most comfortable shoes I have, so I don’t wear them much. Otherwise, I don’t have any of the stuff. It’s fun seeing what some people consider as essential though.

Nice list, Rena. I’ve got to find a go-to-wear-with-everything pair of brown boots this fall. My old ones fell apart last year!

My long cardigan has gone everywhere with me the past few seasons. I wear it around the house, throw it on to go out, and stuff it in my bag whenever (and wherever) I travel. It’s my most worn item next to my jeans. Definitely a good investment piece :)

  5. In San Francisco: a light jacket, a cardigan, pretty hairband, mid sleeve t shirt dress, leggings, and light thin socks and comfortable light sneakers.
