You know this is one of the truths of adulthood: if you do things the night before, tomorrow will be easier.

Somehow we forget. There’s a show to watch, a book to read, or some facebook stream to catch up on. We let little distractions get in the way of making tomorrow successful. But, a stitch in time saves nine. Or whatever.

Here are 9 things you can do tonight to make tomorrow easier:

1. Have a plan for the day. What is happening? Where are you going? What do you need to do? Figure this out and be sure to communicate it to the key players.

2. Choose tomorrow’s outfit. Have your kids do the same. Fight about the tank top in winter tonight instead of tomorrow when you’re trying to get out the door.

3. Set the breakfast table. While you’re at it, make sure there’s milk, eggs, bread, or whatever else you’ll want for the morning meal. Bonus points for a make-ahead breakfast.

4. Pack lunches, even if you’re eating at home. Check out these ideas for packable lunches and warm fuzzies.

5. Collect homework, coats, library books, etc. Whatever needs to leave the house tomorrow needs to be waiting at the front door. You will save yourself all kinds of frustration in the morning.

6. Thaw dinner. Ugh. I am the Queen of Forget to Thaw. Don’t be like me. Grab tomorrow’s dinner from the freezer right now.

7. Run a load of laundry. Better yet, make the kids do it.

8. Check the gas tank. It’ll be easier to fill up tonight than in the morning rush. Gas Buddy will help you find the best price in your neighborhood.

9. Make sure the kitchen is clean. No one wants to wake up to dirty dishes. No one.

Performing these tasks at night can save you lots of hassle come morning. Now go do it. What are you waiting for?

  1. Thank you for the reminder, it’s just 10 minutes before bed!
Keep up the good work with your blog!

  2. For me, I sleep better and things go better if I go to bed earlier. I know that’s not exactly a “to do,” but it’s something I’m working on since it’s not my natural way.

  3. I try to do most of these, but forget sometimes. This just reminded me that I needed to move something for tomorrows dinner from the freezer into the fridge. 🙂
The dishes at night tops my list. I’m not a morning person, and nothing makes me happy about having to move dirty dishes aside in the morning!

  4. Making sure my espresso maker and ingredients are ready makes me a more efficient mama in the mornings!

  5. This is such an awesome list! Life has been a little crazy since we had our second baby (about 6 months ago :)) and I’ve been working on getting us back into a solid routine, so any help with making things run more smoothly around here is greatly appreciated. I’m also working on my new goal of trying to get myself up just a little before my family so that I can get a little head start before things get crazy. I think my favorite tip of yours is cleaning the kitchen up at night. Waking up to a clean kitchen just feels so good. If its not clean, then I feel behind already.

  6. I do most of these things days that I have to leave the house, i also like to make my to do list the night before, and I drink my coffee cold so I try to make coffee the night before and stick in the fridge cold and ready for morning.

  7. Yes! I do most of these. I think I sleep better knowing I’m prepared for the morning. I would add getting the coffee maker ready to go, too. =) I like to turn it on as soon as I’m out of the shower.
