My husband snapped this on date night this week when we tried out Burger Lounge. It was super good. And, no, I did NOT eat all those fries and onion rings myself. FishPapa ate most of them, honestly. When fries are involved, I sometimes have to race him so that I get my fair share.

I feel old. Looking at this picture, I realize that I look it, too. My one consolation is that I’ve seen Savannah Guthrie with and without make-up. (Props to her for sharing those photos and being a normal mom like the rest of us! She’s a natural beauty and looks great postpartum.)

I can’t stand to wear make-up, so I don’t. But, I look in the mirror or at a picture and I feel disappointed. Then God shows me a gorgeous celebrity without the make-up and then I don’t feel bad. My plain face is doing okay after all.

Skin issues have been on my mind a lot this week — besides just my vanity and age spots. I went to the doc on Monday to have some spots checked. She thought they were fine, but just to be sure, she did biopsies later in the week. Ouchie! I didn’t realize that it was minor surgery. She did “punches” of the spots. Think Thrifty ice cream scooper going through your skin.

FishChick5 had another bout of herpes. NOT the icky kind, mind you. But, she’s struggled with cold sores on her thumb and face since she was a toddler. Last fall, it presented on her eyelid which can be super bad. Last weekend she started complaining about her eye hurting. Yep, the virus was stirring again.

She is such a good patient. Oh my. She’s also the one who’s had to be a good patient. Besides herpes, she’s been airlifted to Children’s as well as suffers from serious, potentially life-threatening food allergies.

While I didn’t love two trips to the doctor for her and two trips for me this week, I am super thankful for living in a time and place where there are treatments for these things that ail us.

When I wasn’t shuttling back and forth to medical facilities, I cleaned my office. It was an all-day affair. I’m determined to turn over a new leaf: to tidy the office and the school table each night before bed. I really don’t like the mess, but I get so distracted….

As far as school is concerned, I’m the most prepared I’ve ever been in 12 years. I’m stunned. You can see all my organizy-ness over here. Wow. I even remembered to buy apples for our First Day of School Apple Pie. I’m sure next week I’ll be reporting 52-kinds of disasters, but at least I can say I tried.

  2. I know you probably get loads of *unwanted* advice…but here goes. I, too, have suffered on and off from the cold sore virus since childhood. My initial outbreak was so severe I had to be hospitalized, IV meds and the works. They’ve come and gone in their intensity since then. The past year I was getting one to two every month. Not fun.

    I got fed up with the whole thing and decided to do a little natural research…again. But this time I found an article from a sufferer talking about the wonders of the amino acid lysine as well as lemon balm. I bough the lysine and took a large-ish dose regularly for at least a couple months and since then somewhat consistently. Haven’t had one since then. I’m also using a simple, natural lemon balm lip balm. Maybe it couldn’t hurt to try her on the lysine–crush it up in some apple sauce or something. It’s an amino acid our bodies need anyway.

    • Ha! I spent all last weekend researching lysine and lemon balm for kids!! Unfortunately, there’s not a whole lot of info about lemon balm dosages for kids.

      I’m still researching the lemon balm, but I plan to do daily lysine. I bought it in powder form at the health food store and she drinks it dissolved in a bit of milk.

    When I clicked through to this post, my first thought was how attractive I thought you looked in the photo. Then I read your comment about getting older, and just wanted to share that I had thought you looked really lovely in your photo. I was admiring your look before I even started reading your text. I wouldn’t normally comment to say that because I tend to avoid commenting on other people’s appearances, just because it seems so superficial. But honest-to-goodness, it was my first reaction. Also, I too wear no or very little makeup and sometimes feel insecure about it, but I’m always encouraged when I run into other women who also eschew it, and I think you rock your look!

    P.S. I also think it’s a good role model for your daughters – my mom didn’t wear makeup when I was growing up and she gave me a lot of confidence to make my own choices, both when I gussy up and when I don’t, and to withstand feeling like I have to give in to the multi-billion-dollar beauty industry. Just my two cents. :)

    • Well, thank you! I really appreciate that.

      I think it’s a process I need to go through in order to accept myself in this new phase. I don’t mind being older, but I don’t want to look tired and used up, either.

      No make-up at 25 with clear skin, few spots, and no wrinkles was pretty good! I don’t look like I used to, and I guess there’s a bit of mourning that goes with that. I am horrible about moisturizing, so it’s my own fault. But, I also know that I detest the physical feel of make-up, so I’m not going to go that way, either.

      Choose it or change it is my motto in my 40s. So, I guess that’s what I need to do about my physical appearance. :) Thanks for your encouragement!

      • I rarely comment either but yes yes and yes. I’m 6 months from turning 40 and had a baby 4 months ago. I’ve noticed lately how terrible I look in photos – (I think you look great, by the way, but I understand having to reconcile what you feel like you look like and what you look like on the outside in a photo…) It’s too late for me to learn how to achieve a natural look through make-up – pretty much my only beauty products are a little Olay of Oil and lipgloss.

    First off… like the above commenter I thought it was a lovely picture of you BEFORE I started reading! :)

    Secondly, I’m wondering if you’ve ever considered using essential oils for your cold sores? As an independent distributor for Young Living I just did a quick search and found many, MANY testimonials about using Young Living’s Lavender and Purification EOs or Young Living’s Thieves EO blend and the sores being gone in the same day. I just thought I’d throw that out there. I’d be happy to send you samples if you’d like to give them a try.

  5. Hi Jessica! I am sorry to hear fish chick 5 is having troubles so young. With regards to the herpes virus you might want look into an amino acid called Lysine. You can purchase it at the health food store or places that sell vitamins. If you do some digging/research it seems that those of us that struggle with this malady have a problem with foods high in arginine such as oatmeal, I believe corn, and peanuts. The lysine is taken to balance the foods high in arginine. A naturopath would know the proper dosing for a young child I am sure. That being said, stress to the body, wether from illness or environmental etc…may also be a contributing factor. Hope this helps! I feel terrible that children have to suffer with this kind of stuff. It may be worth investigating.
