About Life as MOM (the blog)

If you stumbled here, you probably already know a little bit about “life as mom,” the lifestyle. It’s full of sleepless nights, overflowing diaper pails, and messes that multiply like bunnies.
It’s also replete with happy giggles, bellies to tickle, and warm bodies to cuddle.
There’s this paradox of motherhood. It’s good and bad and everything in between all mixed together. But, the bottom line is that it’s valuable, even though it’s hard. It’s messy, but it’s important.
It’s challenging, but it’s totally worth doing.
Life as MOM, the blog, is about embracing this crazy yet wonderful life. There are so many things that we’re called to do every day, it’s hard to do it without getting grumpy. The goal here is to equip you — the woman, the parent, the caregiver, the home manager — with ideas and shortcuts to do your job well and still keep a smile on your face, to enjoy the fleeting days of childhood and not wish them away.
You don’t have to be a mom to enjoy the content here, just know that being a mom is a big deal. It’s worthy and honorable.
I want every mother to know she’s not alone in her “life as MOM.”
I’m Jessica Fisher. I was born with the unruly last name of Getskow, which no one could pronounce or spell. Believe it or not, in 1972 the name Jessica was about as uncommon as Getskow. Never would I meet another Jessica Getskow.
Trading my family name for Fisher made me one in a million. Quite literally.
There are a lot of Jessica Fishers in the world, but none of them have quite the quirky life that I do.
My husband and I have been married for almost 20 years. In that time we’ve moved cross country and back again, birthed six babies, suffered three miscarriages , dug out of deep, deep debt, lost one mother to cancer, and taught our kids reading, ‘riting, and arithmetic from the comforts of home.
Over the past 8 years I’ve written for parenting magazines and the web as well as published several books. I self-published my ebooks Organizing Life as MOM , Summer Survival Guide , and A Simpler Season .
My cookbooks were a joint effort with the lovely people at the Harvard Common Press. You can buy Not Your Mother’s Make-Ahead and Freeze Cookbook at your local bookstore. Best 100 Juices for Kids will be released in April of 2014. You can pre-order that now. I like to eat and I’m not afraid to talk about food all the live long day. For proof, check out my food blog, Good Cheap Eats .
Plus, I’ve got a Master’s of Education in case that matters to anyone.
Obviously, I’m hunkered down here on Ye Olde Blog, but you can find me out and about:
There’s no way I could run this place without help. I am so thankful for folks who love me and help me.
I am blessed to have a younger sister who is also an amazing administrative assistant. Janel is like my clone, only the new and improved version of me. She knows what I’m going to say, she gets me, and she’s got my back. She works behind the scenes, helping me schedule posts, catching my typos, editing me for public consumption, and otherwise, serving as a fabulous sounding board for ideas. She’s also a talented writer, seamstress, and crafter. Read Janel’s posts here .
The blog design is the brilliant work of Joy Miller at FiveJs Design .
Andrea Whitmer from Nuts and Bolts Media does an awesome job keeping the site up and running and fighting off hackers like a ninja.
On a weekly basis I feature writing from one of my contributors:
A mother of three, including a 24 week preemie, JessieLeigh is a determined advocate for even the tiniest of babies. She can be found celebrating life’s (sometimes unexpected) miracles and blessings at Parenting Miracles .

Prerna is a mom, a wife, a writer and a woman who believes in parenting with love, being postively productive, and creating a home that invites you to put your feet up and relax. Check out her free eBooks on organizing and productivity to get literally, hundreds of ideas on how to get organized on a shoestring budget, right now.

Rena, aka “the girl with the smile”, is an optimistic style blogger in San Diego. Learning about fashion through trial & error (high school years were pretty awkward), she loves fashion and the ability to create a look and boost self-confidence through clothing. Since Rena lives with all men (husband and two sons), she needed an outlet for her fashion knowledge, so she started the blog The Girl with the Smile .

Deanna is passionate about special needs advocacy and new motherhood- two things that go hand in hand for her right now. Three kids four and under, the oldest of which has Down syndrome- keeps her quite busy. But there’s always enough time left at the end of the day to write all about the insanity at her blog Everything and Nothing from Essex . And to laugh- always, always there is time to laugh. Technically labeled a “special” mother, Deanna really finds nothing special about herself. Truly, special needs parenting is just about taking it one day at a time- enjoying the highs, sloughing through the lows, and stumbling through the mundane while drinking too much coffee.
