30 Things That Are FREE and FUN to Do Any Time of the Year

With summer in full swing here in India, I am putting together an idea file of things to do in the summer that are easy, fun and for the most part, free. I will be using Jessica’s Summer Survival Guide for more ideas for books to read, movies to watch as well as games to play. Meanwhile, here are some of the ones we’ll be recycling from last year.

30 fun and free ideas for summer… or pretty much any season!

1. Bake a cake.

2. Pick berries.

3. Declutter and donate.

4. Visit a friend.

5. Call a friend.

6. Bake cookies and take to the neighbors.

7. Watch a movie.

8. Read a book.

9. Visit the library.

10. Go through your closet and wear something you haven’t worn in 6 months. Yes, am sure you’ll have something. Try it on!

11. Wear makeup and accessories. Yes, even if you aren’t going for a party! (See Rena’s tips on how to accessorize.)

12. Take a nap. Yes, you really can do it.

13. Write a handwritten note to a friend or family member.

14. Color in a picture, with the kids. This is a fave with my daughter. She draws a picture and has us colour it. Fun!!

15. Watch a sitcom.

16. Go for a run around the block. Or a walk. Or just a stroll. Head out! (Check out these 30 ways to get outside.)

17. Learn a self-sufficiency skill. The internet makes it easy and free to find tutorials to learn just about anything. My skill learning for the summer is to learn to knit so that I may be able to knit myself {or my daughter’s doll!} a scarf for winter!!

18. Learn a foreign language. Again, thank you interwebs! Duolingo is making it simple for me to brush up my French. Merci beaucoup!

19. Put together a care package for the homeless. The summer months in India, like the winter, are harsh. Putting together a care package takes little time, and I get to use up all our sample products to bless someone who really needs them.

20. Paint your nails. Don’t forget the toenails. Bright is always fun.

21. Give yourself a mini facial with some homemade face masks. Bliss. Consider putting together a home spa kit.

22. Read a magazine. Cover to cover.

23. Do freestyle stretching exercises. Again, a fave with my daughter. She loves to do simple stretching and bending exercises so win-win!

24. Put on some music and dance away! Always, always fun!

25. Organize photo albums and take a trip down memory lane at the same time!

26. Try out a new recipe, especially one that uses things from your pantry!

27. Do something arty or crafty. Always gets your creative juices flowing.

28. Write in your journal.

29. Revamp and update your home management binder.

30. Just sit quietly and sip your coffee or tea…or wine!

How could YOU be making the most of the summer season without spending a dime?

Can’t wait to hear your ideas!

  1. What a great list! Sometimes we forget that the frugal, simple things can be just as much fun as the big, expensive things. You are so right – mom’s need to have fun, too. Thanks for the great ideas!
