A Cookbook Update, Must-Do Make Aheads, & June Freezer Cooking Days

We’re getting into the homestretch right now with The Cookbook. I turn in my manuscript at the end of this month. What a wild ride it has been!

In case you didn’t know, this is a real bookstore book. Like one that you can go buy at Barnes and Noble or Borders. It was so exciting to see the other books in the Not Your Mother’s series all lined up at Costco.

Next year! My name! On the book table at Costco! Very surreal….

This cookbook will have 200 recipes, suitable for freezing. And more than half of them are recipes you’ve never seen before. It’s been such fun to dream, cook, and test all these new creations. Our freezer is just bursting. We’ll be “eating from the pantry/freezer” in July; that is for sure!

My Freezer Cooking of Late

Since a lot of my work in the kitchen has been creative in nature, I haven’t done my freezer cooking sessions the same way I have in the past. I’ve made use of mini-sessions mostly, spending blocks of time once or twice a week to prepare new recipes and stash them in the freezer. We’re growing fat over here.

But, I’ve realized that even amidst all the new creations, there are some must-haves in my freezer to help my meal times go more smoothly. Here’s the short list:

These are items that really help me with quick breakfasts and lunches. If I have a stash of these to rely on, life goes much more smoothly. At least where mealtimes are concerned.

What’s Your Plan?

Make ahead and freeze meals have been a tremendous help to me over the years. You don’t have to Crazy Woman and cook all day. Even if you just spend an hour or double tonight’s dinner, you can find simple ways to fill your freezer.

Here are some tips to get you started:

This month, I’m spending a few hours a week to prep things for the freezer with some of our must-haves as well as some final new creations.

    I did some freezer cooking last weekend – 20 lbs of ground beef made into meatloaves, meatballs, browned meat, patties etc. Plus a batch of chicken broth. This weekend its strawberry jam, a batch of artisan bread dough, and perhaps an attempt at granola bars, some rice mixes and seasoning mixes.

    Congratulations on the book, I’m looking forward to seeing what is in it!

  9. My SIL and I just tried freezer cooking together this week for the first time! We started with two recipes each, so four meals per family. It was fun to do it together and in two hours we each got four meals for our freezer. We are already planning our next cooking session 🙂
