Don’t you just love birthday cakes?! My first “fun” birthday cake was a Big Mac. Really, it was. I was a spoiled only child for several years and somewhere in that time period, I got a special birthday party at McDonalds, complete with a hamburger shaped cake. Too cool. After that, it was hit and miss on the birthday cakes. Probably because we never thought to dress up a plain cake with frosting, candy, and toys.
It’s by far the simplest way to make a themed cake. And my contribution today’s Birthday Cake Round-Up is no different. I just have the most success decorating cakes this way. Ya gotta go with your strengths, ya know?
Tomorrow Toy Story 3 opens in theaters so I thought it was perfect timing to make a Toy Story cake, featuring Buzz Lightyear. He’s one of our favorites. However, much to my chagrin, my 6 year old thinks his name is “Buzz Light.” Thank you, Football Season and Anheuser-Busch!
This was a very fun and easy cake to make, one that you could replicate in a snap. Check out the tutorial for simple directions.
But, there’s no limit to fun birthday cakes that your kids will love.

Clearly, your 6 year old needs to watch the Toy Story movies a few dozen more times – then he’ll have Buzz’s name right for sure. By 6 I’d lost count of how many times my, now 8 1/2 year old, s on had watched those movies. He’s really psyched about seeing the movie.
I linked up with two cakes that I’ve featured on my blog – a Pokemon cake and a Swimming Bears cake. I LOVE making cakes but find that time is an issue. I just have to make sure to set aside the time to make and decorate the cake in the midst of busy birthday week-ends! I particularly like to fill cakes with pudding and recently had great success using a double-tall “moat” to keep the gobs of pudding in the middle layer.
I really enjoy your blog and am a fairly new reader.
Samantha
My goodness these cakes are adorable! Love the Buzz cake and the four wheelin cake is super cool. I linked up a few posts – sorry the cake photos were in the full party posts {hope that’s ok} Thanks for hosting this linky – I can not wait to check out some amazing inspirations! Hope you are enjoying your week! Stephanie Lynn
What fun! We are looking forward to the movie too! My oldest DS works at the theatre…so we get to see our movies for free!
Bake It Pretty is one of my favorite places! Thanks so much for hosting and for offering the giveaway!

Love these cakes! I don’t have kids yet but when I do I’d like to keep parties simple but have a fun cake.
This is such a fun link up theme! I love looking at cakes decorated by other moms for their kids. There’s nothing like that personal touch. I starting doing cakes for my kids a few years ago and don’t want to go back to store bought for sure now. It’s well worth the effort.
Sherry’s gifts cake is amazing. I want her to make *my* birthday cake.
Sorry, I accidentally linked up twice — forgot to put the cake name in the first one and then couldn’t figure out how to edit and/or delete.
This is such a great roundup! I love seeing what all the creative Moms out there are doing for birthday cakes. What did we ever do before blogs?! I just love seeing all the creative ideas and photos from across the U.S. and elsewhere.
Thanks for the roundup!
Blessings

The link I put was the cake I made for my oldest daughter’s b-day this year. I forgot to name the link… sorry. I got the pirate cake kit and added Tinkerbell and some of the other faries.
I’m still fairly new to decorating cakes for my girls…
Thanks for the ideas!
Those cakes sure are cute! I linked with a a blog post about some of my cakes too. Thanks for checking them out! 🙂
Wow! What a lovely collection of cakes!! I love the gift boxes from Sherry — and that Gumball machine from Jessica is really creative too!!
Thank you for hosting this – it gave me the motivation to FINALLY blog my son’s Walle Cake/Sandwiches from *gasp* 6 MONTHS ago!!
I love it! I have always made my kids cakes, but I am not good. Kids are so sweet and don’t notice that they aren’t perfect. I hope they one day can smile when they see how horrible they were and just love me anyway.
How fun, I peeked around to see other’s cakes. I shared my Dinosaur cake I made for our 3 yr old (you’ll have to click the picture to see it better). I made it a homemade dark chocolate cake, and that was so good! Stop by and say Hi, you saw it linked here!
Well, mine is a bit wimpy before all of those, but the kids loved them, so I guess that is what really counts. Great cakes!
Oh my goodness, some of cakes are insanely gorgeous. In fact, one of them (the gift box one) easily competed with my wedding cake.
These cakes are great!
And so inspiring – I especially love Bob the Builder – and I can’t wait to check out everyone’s links!
I have linked to a cake i made for a first birthday last year – the very hungry catepillar.
Thanks for sharing these! =)
They are all amazing, but that cake that looked like a pile of gifts was stunning! It’s almost too pretty to eat! I don’t make cakes, but I love looking at them. 🙂
I enjoy your Thursday recipe round-up. I linked double, and wondered if you could delete the one that says “Twila.” Thanks!
I always love your Birthday Cake Roundup, and am excited to join in =)
All of these cakes are amazing! Making birthday cakes is one of the best and worst (so much pressure!) parts of party planning!
I love the Buzz Lightyear Cake! I have to forward that to my sister in law…my nephew LOVES Toy Story!
I linked up one of mine, but have another one too…

Those are so great!! I posted my youngest’s birthday cake from earlier this year:-)
Thanks for doing this round-up. I love getting ideas! I’m taking a cake decorating class this summer, so this is great for me! I showed a few birthday cakes that I made for my boys this year–Little Einsteins & a Wii cake.
We JUST celebrated my son’s birthday, and I knew you were going to do this link-up, but I didn’t get my Alligator cake-focused post done in time! SO, you’ll have to scroll down to see it! LOL!
Thanks for hosting! I love to see what others have done!
so fun!! my sister is Heather – the photo of the balloon cake for Emily shown above.
Wow, I am so inspired by all the ideas that were posted! I made one cake myself, but it pales in comparison. I am ready to start trying more decorative and elaborate cakes now.
Its so fun seeing what other moms are creating! I LOVE making birthday cakes for my kids. I linked to the guitar cake I made for my girl and a aligator cake I made for my son:)

I bake most of the cakes for my family. However, we are all “grown-ups” so I haven’t had the opportunity to get to make a fun kid-themed birthday cake. My most recent creation was a Baked Alaska for my dad’s birthday. I would love to win a gift certificate!
Thank you! I love your blog and all your ideas.
So many wonderful and inspiring cakes. I love the ones that make use of kids toys. They create a dramatic effect, with minimum work. 🙂
I landed on your blog when I was searching for a planner I can use during the summer to keep the house and four kids organized. I learned a lot from your planner post, and took some ideas. Thank you for sharing.
These are so creative! How much fun to look at them.
Hi! I would like share my contribution: 2 home made cakes that I made for my 6 year old (Transformers fan) and my 2 year old (dump truck fan!). But I am not sure how to send you the photos.

I love these! My favorite is either the pile of presents or the pink guitar cake! So cute! My daughter’s 1st birthday is coming up- I am trying to come up with ideas to make her cake! 🙂
I love looking at everyone’s photos for inspiration…beautiful cakes everyone!!!
I just love the cakes. I’m afraid to admit in the midst of all these creative mothers that I…gulp…bought a cake for my little guy’s first birthday. Maybe this year I’ll attempt to make my own cake–his b-day is coming up in August. Thanks so much for the inspiration!
Wow!! Beautiful cakes!!! Toy Story is one of my absolute fave children’s movies – the cake is just too cute!!!
I linked the Disney Princess Castle cake I made for my daughter’s 4th birthday. It turned out great and tasted just as good.
