Dinners, Drive-Throughs, and Dimes

Dinners are on my mind this week as I endeavor to fill our freezer with some premade items. I’m hoping that I can invest some time and energy on the front end in order to have a few nights off in the coming weeks. My end goal is to avoid the drive through and save some dimes in the process.

Rather than tackle the 30 meals all in a couple days as I did last summer, I’m approaching it in a different way. This week, I’m making double and triple batches of many of the dinners this week. We often eat the same things a few times a month, so I think it will work out. I can spread them out into next month if need be.

Here’s my plan:
Breakfaststhe regular schedule

pasta salad
salmon, rice and veg (Hubs doesn’t like salmon, but the kids do, so I’m going to try it out in my new rice cooker.)
snacky lunch
soup and crackers
tuna sandwiches

Dinners – bolded are the items that I’ll double or triple.
Steak stirfry, rice, broccoli, and potstickers
Chicken Paella, salad, and french bread
Boules de Picolat, boiled potatoes, steamed veg
Lasagna, green salad, foccaccia
beans and rice and chips
Pizzas and Calzones

PS. Just had to share. This weekend I made a major coup during grocery shopping which resulted in a $10 Steak dinner for 7!

4 top sirloin steaks = $7.50
4 pounds potatoes = $.80
bakery french bread = $.24 after coupon
Caesar salad kit = $.98 after coupon
miscellaneous spices and butter $.50

Where could you possibly eat like a king for less than $1.50 per person? Home, of course! We even had leftovers for stirfry the next night.

    Wow, great deal on the steak dinner. My kids love steak, but we rarely have it because of the price!

    Oh, how I try to reuse those leftovers. It is pretty amazing how you can save money eating at home. It is nice to figure out how much you spent per meal. Sometimes the two of us and an occasional friend can eat and be full for under $5. Thanks for sales at the market, and I don’t coupon shop!

    I got a rice cooker for Christmas, and my family LOVES the salmon with coconut rice recipe that came in the manual. (Honestly, I’m not that much of a fish fan, but when my kids all love it and my husband actually stops on the way home from work to buy salmon so I can make it, well …)

    I have made it four times since Christmas.
