Holiday Safety Tips (& a Giveaway from State Farm)

Avoid holiday accidents, injuries, and theft by considering some of these tips from State Farm.

Christmas and New Years can be wonderful times of celebration. But, they can also be busy times at emergency rooms and insurance offices. Accidents and thefts can be a very unwelcome part of the holidays.

But there are a few things we can do to protect ourselves and our families from injury or harm. Consider these tips from State Farm (and me):

1. Water your Christmas tree!

To help keep your tree fresh, the National Christmas Tree Association recommends adding one quart of water per day for each inch of the trunk’s diameter.

(From FishMama: We easily delegate this task to a child by having them fill the reservoir with ice cubes. Ice doesn’t make such a mess if spilled, but it waters the tree as it melts. Here are a few other tree safety ideas.)

2. Make sure your home is childproof.

Keep decorations with small parts out of kid’s reach as well as dangerous decorative plants such as Mistletoe, holly berries and Jerusalem cherries which can be poisonous if consumed in large amounts.

(From FishMama: Check out these tips to avoid accidental poisoning, provided by the California Poison Control System.)

3. Don’t let your garbage advertise your new gadgets.

Setting out a box with the picture of a giant TV on it is a prime invitation for burglars.

(From FishMama: Cut the boxes up into smaller pieces and place them in your recycling bin, face down.)

You can see more tips for a safer holiday season on State Farm’s website.

  41. Thanks and Merry Christmas, Jessica!

  42. I think it was on your blog that I first heard the ice cube trick last year and I’ve passed it on repeatedly since then. I wish I would’ve known that as a kid (I spilled the water so many times) or when we had kids around to let them do it that way instead.

  68. Just last year my littlest fell and cut his lip on a metal wreath hanging on a doorknob. 7 stitches later we learned to check out or decos for sharp edges.

Love the idea of using ice cubes to water the tree. Last year my 13 year old flooded the tree by overfilling on Christmas Eve. Talk about a scramble to remove presents before getting too wet! Even big kids spill. 🙂

Thanks so much for participating in this conversation about "a mom's life."

This is a place where moms can be themselves. Remember that each mother's path looks a little different. Please keep your comments respectful and kind. Reasonable minds will disagree in a nice way.

So let's talk about it, using "our big girl words."
