When I first became a mom (circa 1997), we had a dial-up internet connection that worked really, really slow. My husband had a pager. I don’t think I even had a cell phone.
A lot has changed in the last 16 years! Back then it was a little bit harder to get information and a little more costly. If I wanted a book on natural child birth, I’d have to buy it from Borders (does Borders even exist anymore?!) or hope that a friend or the library could loan it to me.
Nowadays, I can download a book from the library or Amazon in a few clicks of a mouse. They aren’t kidding when they say we live in the information age!
As a prenatal patient, I was always on the crunchy side. No, I don’t want an epidural, thank you. No, I don’t want to lie in bed. Yes, I do want to walk around. Yes, I do want to breast feed.
Even though I had three of my babies in California, home of the hippies, I still got some raised eyebrows over my birthing choices. That’s okay. We lived to tell about it.
Some observations now that my baby years are past:
- I heavily relied on many of Dr. Sears’ books like The Birth Book, The Baby Book, and The Discipline Book. Maybe not lockstep, but those original editions matched my own thinking pretty well.
- I wish I knew that miscarriage wouldn’t break me — completely.
- Breastfeeding was worth it, but it was hard.
- I wish I had done a few things differently.
Sixteen years ago I would have been thrilled to get my hand on books like these:
Books for Healthy Babies and Kids
- Confessions of a Cloth Diaper Convert by Erin @ The Humbled Homemaker ($12.50)
- Warning: I Throw Food—A Comprehensive Guide to Natural Homemade Baby Food by Jami @ Young Wife’s Guide ($9.99)
- Parent’s Playbook for Learning by Jen @ Kidzmet ($3.99)
- Creative Ways to Calm Your Baby by Justyn @ Creative Christian Mama ($6.99)
- Fearless Birth by Kristen @ Natural Birth and Baby Care.com ($17.00)
- My Pregnancy Journey by Mindy @ Simply Designs ($10.00)
- Natural Birth Stories: The Real Mom’s Guide to an Empowering Natural Birth by Shannon @GrowingSlower ($9.95)
Currently all these books are available in The Ultimate Healthy Living bundle. The sum total of these books is $70.42. The bundle includes 86 ebooks for $29.97 this week. That’s a lot of books, and it can seem overwhelming. That’s why I wanted to break it down for you a bit so you can see the forest for the trees.
Love me some Dr. Sears!
I love the photo of you and your baby sleeping in the chair . I remember those days when my children were younger. There is nothing More precious than having your newborn baby all snuggled in a blanket laying on your chest sleeping. It feels like they melt into you andyou become one. Love it!!
