Simple Planning for a Stress-free Holiday Season

Yes, it’s that time of the year again! The holidays are just around the corner and chances are you’re getting stressed over the gifts that need buying, the food that needs cooking, the decorations that need putting up. Life as MOM contributor, Prerna Malik offers suggestions on how to lighten that load with good planning. 

Yes, it is that time of the year again. However, planning a stress-free holiday season isn’t as difficult as it seems. You see, when you plan, you take one giant step towards cutting out the stress, so let’s get started right away, shall we?

1. Get Your Lists and Holiday Planner in Order

Begin by getting your holiday planning lists ready and filing them into a planner. You can either get a copy of A Simpler Season by Jessica or check out my collection of 15 free printable Christmas planners to help you get started.

Fill out your lists in as much detail as possible. It will make your life a LOT easier. For instance, when menu planning, I generally don’t just write down the name of the dish, I also jot down where to find the recipe, the grocery list for it and when to do the prep work for it. This means that when I get down to cooking I have everything I need and I know how much time it would take me.

2. Schedule Time for Holiday Prep in your Planner

Next, go through your calendar or master schedule and block chunks of time for holiday prep. This will help you glance at your calendar and know when you’re doing what. Also, it will stop you from piling your plate on with unnecessary commitments and activities. Yes, we all do that. Ask me how I know!

3. Cut Down Activities That Aren’t Needed

Next, go through your holiday as well as regular household activities and see which ones can you do without. This will help you free up your time and give you much-needed breathing space.

Holiday activities that family members neither enjoy nor look forward can be on that list. Household activities that eat up way too much of your time without adding value or quality to your life go on the list. You may want to add them back {but really, do you want to?} once the holidays are over.

4. Stay Real. Stay Sane

Finally, remember the holidays are different things for different people. Keeping it real for the season of your life and your family is what is important. Losing your mind over the perfect pudding or gift wrap is not what your kids will remember. What they will remember is the happiness and the warmth that wafted through the house, the sounds of laughter and music, the simple but meaningful traditions. So, keep it real. For your sanity’s sake.
