What’s Cookin’

I’m getting a little weary of the grocery store. As much as I love the challenge of the hunt for good deals, my grocery trips take a pretty big bite out of my week, about 2-4 hours planning, organizing coupons, and shopping. It’s totally worth it in terms of dollars and sense. But, I think I am ready for a break.

When I read about Crystal’s Eat-From-the-Pantry challenge, I was intrigued. Could we just make do with what we have? Probably. But, then again, I might miss out on a really good deal. It’s hard for me to pass up a sale. But, self-control is what frugal living is all about, isn’t it?

So, I decided that I’m going to take the rest of the month off from any major shopping. I scoped out the cupboards, fridge, and freezer, and planned out all the meals that I know I can make. I made a trip for some odds and ends on Saturday to round things out. I have a feeling that more meals may be possible than I think. At this point I am hoping we can make it until May Day, except for a stop or two for milk and fresh produce. We shall see….

Here’s my plan for the next 2-3 weeks of meals:

Enchiladas, rice, and beans
PB Chicken
Chicken Smothered in Onions, mashed potatoes
Boules de Picolat, boiled potatoes, veg
Pizza and Salad
Sausage and Pepper Calzones and Salad
Bean Tostadas
Grilled Chicken and Vegetables, Rice Pilaf, Salad
Oven Baked Ribs, Potatoes, Salad
Spaghetti and Meatballs, Salad, Foccaccia
Beans and Rice
Pasta with Red Sauce, Veg, and Rolls
Carnitas Soft Tacos, Beans and Rice
Meatloaf and Rice or Potatoes, Veg, and Baguette
Taco Salad
Paella, Salad, and Baguette
Lemon Noodles, Grilled Chicken, Salad, and Bread
Hamburgers, Fries
Shredded Beef Tacos
Chili Dogs, French Fries, Salad

  1. Sounds like you have a plan and a yummy menu! It will be interesting to watch and read how far you make it in the coming weeks with your goal. 🙂

I am limiting my shopping this month to just the necessities and working at using up some of my pantry and freezer stash so that I can rotate those close to expire items out and then next month start restocking again.

    Enjoy your week! 🙂

  2. You have some great items on your list. You will be able to make it no problem. I will definitely keep up with your blog to see how you are doing though!

I am also taking on the challenge and not buying any meats until our freezer is empty. I have just started the bargain hunting so I can’t pass up on deals just yet!!!

  3. I need to take a break too, but then I keep seeing great deals on stuff and can’t resist…

  4. Another blogger I read just did this a few weeks ago too, and was quite successful at it too. By the end they were getting pretty skimpy but her family made it. I can’t wait to see what you have to eat.
