YOU are the Queen of Your Castle

Updated: This contest is now closed. 2/11/09

No matter where you spend your days, you are the queen of your castle. And as such, it behooves you to know what you can do to make your home a happy, healthy, welcoming place to be. One way is to have a good attitude.

And this book, Queen of the Castle is a great resource for encouragement and inspiration. It’s a lighthearted look at life as Mom, full of creative family fun ideas as well as suggestions for better home management.

It also includes some great chocolate recipes. And we know that is very important.

(You can read my review here.)

If you didn’t get to read yesterday’s post by the author, Lynn Bowen Walker, I suggest that you take a few minutes to do so; it’s sure to make you smile. This week, Lynn has very graciously offered a copy of her book to one LifeasMOM reader. Yeah!

This giveaway is open until next Tuesday night (2/10/09), midnight PST. Winner will be announced Wednesday morning and has 48 hours to respond before an alternate is chosen.

Now, here’s how to enter:

My favorite part of my home is my boys’ bunkbed. We bought it for them with the intention of the 5 year old sleeping up top, but he’d rather sleep on the bottom with his brother. I’ve spent lots of time on the bottom bunk reading books before bed and saying prayers. Good memories…plus, moments later they go to bed and it’s quiet in the house for a little bit :-).

  2. Our new king-size bed. It’s made cuddling with our two boys much more comfortable for all of us! 🙂

  3. Zimms Zoo says:

Our new table that actually seats all of our family at once and even another family of 6 at the same time.

  4. What I love best about our castle is our photos. Everywhere …photos to remind us of wonderful things we’ve done together and the memories we’ve made. Photos to remind us that we are our own little “tribe” and any place you look you know how much we love each other. Our photos. Without our photos this could be anyone’s castle – who would know the difference? Our photos stake our claim to it.

  5. 4squarephotos says:

My favoriate book is Organizing from the inside out by Julie Morgenstern. She gives you a great foundation for organizing your home!

  6. The Things We Do says:

Actually, for me it’s our porch. I’m a porch girl. I love to study my Bible there in the summer months and sip iced tea. All winter long I long for my porch. It’s just the perfect quiet place that relaxes me.

  7. My favorite is our big comfy couch. We all pile on it to read stories through-out the day and before bed. It is also a good spot for movie watching (for the grownups) when we have our family dinner and a movie night.

  8. I live in a log cabin, and I love all of it (except the dirt!). My favorite though would be our fireplace.

  9. Briana Almengor says:

I want to do so many updates to our castle that I have to say I don’t really like its current state. But, if I had to pick one room, it would be our living room. I love the wall color ( a sage) even though it is in desperate need of being repainted. I love the decor even though it has some places I need to put something on the wall. And, I love the dry sink I got for free where the kids stuff all their toys at the end of the day (some days). I really wish I could get the carpet replaced with wood flooring and new furniture as we have hand me downs that are likely over 25 yrs. old….we really need to replace it.

We live in an old farmhouse that used to be my grandparents. I sleep in the room that my sisters and I used to fight over when we came to visit. The laundry room is right off the kitchen. When the sun is shining there is wonderful light coming into the house. I own a big fern that sits right where my grandma’s big fern used to sit. My husband installed a huge chalk board from a university for free which helps us in our schooling tremendously. If I get up early enough I see great sunrises to the east. My grandpa’s old office is now our school room with a wall full of built in shelving. . . not the cheap fake wood stuff, but the solid, oak wood. The walls colors I picked myself (using mistints from paint stores) and they are very peaceful. My grandma’s built-in desk sits in my kitchen and makes me think of her. I know this is more than just one thing, but the greatest is that my family of 6 lives and learns here and that we love God here. (we are only renting, but this has been our best home.)

  11. My favorite part is our big king size bed. Our whole family gets in comfy for movies with popcorn and we do breakfast in bed every chance we get.

  12. Raggedy Girl says:

First of all I think I am in love with Shelia’s home, it sounds wonderful. I love my front room. It is undergoing a redecorate right now but I already love how cozy it feels

  13. I love my whole house! We just moved in last July and I adore just looking around and enjoying the view. It’s nothing fancy, just a country style house. If I did have to chose though, I would choose my kitchen. It is so big compared to the kitchen in our previous house. It’s open with an island stove in the middle. The kitchen opens up into the dining room and loving room so I am able to watch TV while cooking!

  14. Initially my favorite part thought was: the people in my home. My family is my favorite part of my home.

But the next is definitely my kitchen. It’s nothing fancy and we’d love to remodel, but it’s nice and room with lots of counterspace, wide drawers and cabinets. In a remodel, I would love to convert my laundry room into a walk-in pantry, but the pantry I have is really sufficient. I just tend to dream big.

  15. My favorite part of our home is our closets. They aren’t big in any sense of the word (1899 home). Since they are so small I have to be very very organized and love when I open the door and everything is perfectly in it’s place. Odd, I know!

  16. JessieLeigh says:

My favorite part of our home may well be my 99 sq ft from bathroom! It is such a bright, open space and HUGE for a bathroom. We have a beautiful framed mirror in there and some lovely framed scenery shots of our time in Curacao.

This was fun to think about… helped me realize that there is actually SO much that I like about “my castle”!

  17. Mrs. Querido says:

My family who resides within said castle is my favorite part of my home! If you mean structurally, I love my kitchen because it looks out into our backyard–and ever since we lived in apartments, I had dreamed of having a kitchen that overlooked the backyard. My husband put the offer in on the house before I even saw it—he was that sure 🙂

  18. Mrs. Querido says:

    Oops..I didn’t read all the comments first..honestly I didn’t mean to copy Courtney..sorry!

  19. lizardcat says:

My favorite place, where I spend about 95% of my time, is our kitchen, which opens into the family room. The previous owner cut a huge, rather crude arch in the existing wall to join the two rooms; it’s definitely nothing fancy. But at the time we moved in, I had two toddlers and a baby on the way, and the thought of a safe place for us all to work and play sold the house for me. Most evenings I’ll be making dinner, one kid will be coloring at the table, and a couple more will be dumping Legos a few feet away on the rug, and it’s such a peaceful way to end our day together.

  20. My favorite part of my home is the family room. There is nothing quite like having the whole family snuggled on the couches with warm blankets, fire in the fireplace, eating popcorn and enjoying a movie. Makes me smile just thinking about it.

  21. CountryMama@The Cozy Country Home says:

In the inside, I love our family room. We just put in a new fireplace and it’s been nice to enjoy the mantle this past Christmas. Outside, we have three acres of beautiful land. The view from the top of our hill is gorgeous in all seasons!

  22. I love our kitchen. It’s and important part of our family life. We cook, eat, do dishes and play games there. A place for all sorts of bonding!

  23. I used to hate that my house was small, but now that life is busy (3 small children, home school, running a business, church etc.) I am grateful for a small home because I am not cleaning ALL the time. I have time for more important things, like those three little monkeys and their daddy! If I had to pick a room…definately the kitchen. We all seem to merge there in the evenings, playing, talking, cooking and eating.

  24. I think I like my kitchen the best…when it’s clean of course! Because we have an open floor plan, the kitchen is half of our common living space and opens into the living room. I love that I can watch my kids play while I work in the kitchen, and when I’m relaxing in the living room, it’s pretty to look at. We remodeled it ourselves (with some family help) over a year ago and love the results. It changed the feel of our home.

  25. I love our whole house. But I particularly love our school room. We had a flood last summer (the refrigerator) so we had to re-do the whole half of the house. This room was the worst so now we have new wood floors, beautiful white baseboards. My father in law installed track lights and a new fan and a big desk that goes the length of the room. It’s sunny and bright and easy to keep clean (if you look underneath all the crayons and papers on the floor!) This is where my space is and i love it.

  26. Katie @ 3 Blondes and a Redhead says:

I love our kitchen. I wish it were bigger, but we spend a lot of time there and I love to cook, so I’m in there a lot!

  27. The 3D Momma says:

My favorite part of my home is our basement (recently finished) it’s so light and airy. Plus, I now have a laundry room (to hide my mountain of dirty clothes!)

  28. inkelywinkely says:

I love my kitchen and living room. My kitchen is ugly and worn and used up, but it’s mine. My living room is exactly the same, minus the “ugly” part. It’s so shabby chic, it’s everything I could ever want. Absolutely perfect!

  29. The Bumbles says:

My favorite part of our home is our fireplace. I have always wanted a fireplace since I love building fires on chilly winter days – they are so warm and cozy and calming – not to mention beautiful to look at.

When we built our addition the fireplace was created to be the centerpiece of our new family room. As we lived for 6 months with my in-laws all I could dream about was moving back into our house and settling in front of that fireplace with my hubby for some much deserved alone time.

We watched patiently as the fireplace was created – first structurally and then asthetically as the mason created a work of art with the stone. As the weather got colder I would envision a toasty fire every time I stopped by to check on the addition’s progress.

When we were able to move back in a week before X-Mas the first thing we did was to build a roaring fire and toast to our new home – with no in-laws.

My favorite part of my house is my kitchen table. It is where we cook, play games, eat and do lots of things it is the center of activity in my house

  31. Samantha R says:

My favorite part of our home is my son’s bedroom. My husband built his crib and changing table, I have quilt-squares that my great-grandmother cross stitched framed on his wall and an old rocking chair that has been in my family for 50+ years is in the corner.

  32. Sweetpeas says:

I love how over the years people have turned every available inch into storage space, shelving along the stairs to the basement, closets tucked away, etc.

  33. My favourite part is my bedroom because that is where I can kick back and relax.

  34. I love my living room. It’s casual and we spend a lot of time here together.

  35. cari_and_kevin_king says:

My favorite part of my home is how cozy it is and the more I get to spend with my loved ones who occupy it with me.

  37. dysfunctional housewife says:

My favorite part of my “castle” is my dining room. It’s an addition onto the back of my house that my wonderful hubby built for us. The 3 walls are all windows! 6′ x 6′ sliding glass. It lets in the sunlight all year round. We use the room everyday. Meals, crafts, just sitting around chitchatting. I love to sit and watch the birds at my feeders. I just love that room!

  38. My fave part of my castle is my front porch when the sun is shining on it. I love to sit out there, have a cup of tea, and soak up the vitamin D!

  39. Jennifer Noble says:

In my home, the former owners added on a sun room at the back of the house. We had little children when we moved in, so I noted they had left the old doorbell installed when they added that room. I thought it would be fun for the kids to play with as they grew up, and I had to share that vision with my husband when he disabled it at one point. So – now it's working & my middle daughter especially likes to ring it when their grandma comes over. So – when we did some family compliments around the dinner table one night, my 4-yr-old son says to our middle child, "I like that Sierra tricks Grandma." My vision has come to life!

  40. Mommyhood is Thankless says:

My favorite part is the big front window!

  41. I love my kitchen – ample counter space, sun and light all day – and my family room with the cozy fireplace, and the master bedroom with the vaulted ceiling. I love everything about my house!

My favorite part of our house is my screen room and our backyard!

  43. Linda and Greg says:

I love our banquet seating in our kitchen, it is where everyone gravitates when they come over! Thanks for a great giveaway!
